Join My English Mindset and transform the way you think and feel about your English: bit.ly/3WdR0r1
How to avoid making mistakes in English? Say NO to perfection and Yes to communication. In this video, I'll talk about why it is so freaking important NOT to let your self-judgment and fear of failure stop you from achieving your goals and dreams and prevent you from taking your abilities in English to the next level.
Communication is what drives us as human beings in this world. Perfection only takes away from our human experience.

I come from a country (Yemen) where people's English is being judged based on their accent. To be honest, that was holding me from expressing myself for years despite having a good level of English. I gained more confidence after getting an excellent score in the IELTS exam, but speaking is still the skill I would like to improve. After recording videos of myself over different periods of time, I can see the progress made. I regret the years I spent in silence fearing others to judge me and the fact that I was withholding my thoughts and creativity because of that. I have learnt to never judge anyone based on his/her accent. For me, speaking a second language is a huge achievement that we should all cherish, not criticise. Your channel is an eye-opener Hadar, I really thank you for sharing your invaluable and very humanistic experience.

Doesn't matter what I watch or listen to when I am on KZfaq. I always end up here listening to you and your great ideas about English. And this topic that you mention in the video is super important. As a person who is in love with the English language, I even sometimes feel scared of making a mistake when I speak English This idea of being perfect every time you speak English really kills your motivation and enthuasism. And it really stops you from expressing yourself in English. I think what we all should do is to start seeing our mistakes as a way of learning. Thanks a million, Hadar. You are awesome and to me listening to you is like listening to my favorite song. Bye...

Perfectionism is bad in all sorts of activities in life, according to my therapist. And she's right! Let go of the need for perfection, and you will be much happier. Take for instance beauty, everyone wants something more; maybe it's a few inches taller, a smaller nose, a six-pack. Whatever it is, work hard to improve it (if it can be improved; height, for instance, can't) but remember that perfection is unattainable. That being said, one's pronunciation surely can be improved, so one should work hard to improve it, but one should be satisfied with his or her progress too.

Hi Hadar! :) Exactly! I think you nailed it! Rather than getting affected by negative comments it's much better to focus on positive ones, specially those which are really objective and tend to be supportive. I also think each one of us are smart enough to read the context of a comment, whether it's a true critique or just a mere 'troll/hater' trying to make you upset. And, just as you said, it's quite important to push yourself a little bit every day to gain experience and improve, overcoming the fear to speak. In my case, it happens always, even though I've had a noticeable improvement in English skills. By times I still feel discouraged and afraid of failing; but suddenly I recall it's failure that will make me grow, and the more the better. Well, just wanted to share the thought. Have an excellent week! :D Blessings!!

I totally agree. I say to my friends and coworkers: perfecting the English is only possible if you learn with failures. That´s the path I have followed, and I still make mistakes. At the beginning I was afraid to make mistakes but I had noticed that it was counter-productive. So I decided to speak even speaking with mistakes.

Sometimes this problem is deep-rooted that simple advice or one's own intention to overcome it simply won't work. I was raised by a father who expected nothing but prefection from me. I came on top of every class in school until the 8th grade. As a child, I had to make no mistakes in my education, or in the way I talk and socialize with others. My father would introduce me to his friends and tell them time and time again how perfect of a child I was; I never wanted to disappoint. Years later, I grew up to become more independent (18 years old back then) but I took most of that burden with me. I had free time so I decided to go to a school to improve my English. Again, I was on top of every class, but this time I felt my speaking skills lagged way behind my other skills, so I decided to spend more time with some classmates outside the school to speak English with. I made mistakes, and unfortunately my friends would somewhat ridicule me for it. "Dhia, how come you make these mistakes and you are the best student in class, not you Dhia, not you". I would hear those comments in class, too. Because of this, I preferred to stay quiet in my classes more often than not. "Mistakes like these make no one proud of you" I told myself. I graduated school (on top again) with extraordinary writing, reading and listening skills, but mediocre speaking skills at best. The idea of prefection hindered my progress, and gradually made me lose confidence. I knew where the answer was, not in school, it was in me, I had to do something but I needed help. I decided to see a psychothyrapist, my treatment lasted months, but it changed everything. I went back to learning English, but this time I was brimming with confidence, my speaking skills (fluidity and accuarcy) vastly improved in no time. Later I got obsessed with the American aacent, worked on it for years too, but it was a happy journey nonetheless.

Dearest Dhia, thank you so much for sharing. Your story gave me chills. Both as an instructor, knowing that there's so much I can to to help and sometimes seeking for professional help is the only solution, but also as a mother trying to find the balance between supporting and helping my daughters succeed while not instilling the need for perfection or the fear of disappointing me in them. I admire you for this journey of yours. That's really inspiring.

Hadar! You are amazing. I thought your speech is error-free. :-) But after you had said, "I make mistakes" I started listening to you more attentively. Yes, you have mistakes. For example, you said, "I would never succeeded..." On the other hand, you are so confident. All you errors often dissolve in your speech. People listen what you say not how you say. I noticed when I focus too much on grammar I make more mistakes. I've been living in the USA for 15 years. My English is pretty fluent but I often cling to grammar. I try to analyze how I said and my fluency drops. :-(

I do not agree with the idea that people who are pointing out your mistakes are people that you don’t want around you! I mean the only way to get better is by noticing the mistakes and trying to fix them so having a friend who can recognize and point out your mistake every time that you do it can be super helpful

It’s not people who are pointing out your mistakes, but people who make you feel bad about how you sound, and make fun of you. These are two different things!

I call the imaginary enemy whose idea of perfection is his Baldi. He appears in Baldi's Basics, in this game the player has to collect 7 math notebooks and then get out of the school. That sounds simple but that's actually near impossible, because in all the notebooks except the first one the third problem is impossible to read and answer correctly, and Baldi gets angry when the player does answer any problem correctly and starts chasing the player and when he catches the player the game is over. Baldi is also commonly faster than the player and the player's speed is is slower than all the characters who can move, and the other characters are the principal who punishes the player for breaking his rules, playtime who looks for partners to jump in rope, and more.
