A French Frye in Paris

A French Frye in Paris

After Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI were guillotined their remains were unceremoniously buried in a nearby cemetery. This chapel was constructed on the site in their honor. It offers great examples of 19th century architecture, artistic details, and an interesting cast of characters.

Thanks for this vlog. This place is not very famous so it renders the overall feeling of privacy, calmness, very appropriate for a meditative moment. I like to go there when I need to recollect in this peaceful place. What a beautiful homage from a daughter to her parents. The couple had 4 children, 2 of them died before the revolution, Marie-Antoinette also experienced 2 miscarriages. They have adopted 5 children too. These statues are extremely beautiful. Such a special place to my heart ❤️

I’m French; have visited Paris throughout my 60+ life; have lived here for the past 24 years; and have explored almost all of the city’s historical nooks & crannies … Yet I’ve *NEVER* been to the Chapelle Expiatoire! Until I remedy this, I’ve at least had the pleasure of visiting the place vicariously - thanks to the beautifully filmed and very pleasantly narrated informative tour. Even the sound quality is excellent! *A splendid bit of Frye and Corey!* _(Sorry, I couldn’t resist)_

Eric and I enjoyed watching this special place through your lens. The carvings in marble of lace, fur and feathers is incredible. I can only imagine the details must be unbelievable in person. Looking forward to our visit to Paris later this month and meeting up with you.

I really enjoyed this vlog post. A couple of things, Corey: you righty identified the cypress tree as a funerary symbol but I wanted to add that all of the poppy seed pods are equally a symbol of death (sleep, actually). While you are correct that the chapel's dome is related to the Pantheon in Rome, it isn't correct to refer to the oculus as Romanesque. It's based upon ancient Roman models (Pantheon), but the term Romanesque has a different meaning and relates to a much later and specific style of architecture. I enjoy your beautifully filmed videos.Keep up the great work!

Unfortunately, during the Commune de Paris, several ostages were executed in the prison of La Roquette (no more existing, replaced by a public garden), near the Père Lachaise cemetery. This occurred on the 5th of may 1871. Among the victims was the archbishop of Paris, Mgr Georges Darboy.

Did you notice the dry poppy pods mixed with the cypressus branches ? I think they symbolise the eternal sleep of the (expiatory ?) victims. I passed often near this public garden and I noticed that all its trees and shrubs have exclusively white flowers (this colour being a symbol of royalty).

Thank you so much for a wonderful video! Two observations: the female figure in the Marie Antoinette statue did not appear to have wings from what I could see. She did have a covered head which usually indicates an actual human female in religious art of the era. I think this is more aptly the Theotokos, the Queen of Heaven, to whom the queen is reaching rather than an angel. The figure with King Louis is an angel as the wings are prominent and the head uncovered as angels are not gendered. The interesting aspect of the king’s sculpture is the formation of a cross made by the placement of the two figures with the king’s arms forming the crossbars, and beautifully illustrating the good thief crucified on our Lord’s right by the open right hand tilting up. To this day Eastern Orthodox crosses have the slanted foot bar pointing to the right. Nineteenth century people would have instantly recognized the Theotokos and known the significance of the slanted, upward-stretching right arm.

Seems very diabolical the level of cruelty, the harsh way they treated Marie Antoinette. Instead of sitting down with her to figure out a way to feed the poor people who were suffering from hunger, if I remember correctly, they humiliated her then murdered her.

Yes, that's what's called a revolution.

The reality is that this revolution was organized and made not by the poor but by the bourgeoisie who had the money but wanted more. They wanted the power.
