I have kept a pretty decent variety of cichlids in general. Mbuna will always be my favorites. I downgraded from 35 or so tanks to just 1 main system with a 110 and 40B in wall setup. I run a 40B sump on it. It was recently converted from Reef to Mbuna. I don’t regret it.

Awesome video, currently I'm keeping only yellow labs, they are little more than 30 in a 60 gallons tank, they all were born in a separated tank. I'm thinking to change some of those yellow mbunas by another color cichlid, maybe a peacock, but I haven't been sure it's a good idea to mix them. This video gives me more info about peacocks 👍

"Recognizing their owner" is so true. When I enter the fish room they all rush to the glass and follow me around. When someone else goes down there the fish lose their minds trying to hide. I love the interaction. I separated out Mbuna from Peas and Haps a while back. My Mbuna got real nasty when they put on size. So I went with only Peas/Haps. Maybe it would have worked in a bigger tank. I only had a 60 gallon at that time. They're both beautiful.

I never kept cichlids (exept rams and angelfish a long time ago as a kid). now i run a 720L community tank and a small shrimp tank, but i just got a 240L (about 63G) and im really interested in setting up a cichlid tank. from my research so far, its the mbuna im looking for, since i want a rockpile in the middle type landscape. also they're smaller, which is good since 63G seems to be on the smaller side for africans. but how many should i get? also, id' really like to have a different kind of cleanup crew than corrys and some L-speicies. im thinking panthercrab (which i kept before, they can be agressive to small, slow fish) and/or long armed shrimps. would this work? or should i get different crabs/shrimps/crayfish? i'd really like to have a crustacean cleanup crew, enforcing the "saltwatwater" feel the cichlids color and behavior brings. and i'd like to have them "medium sized". im afraid amanos just gonna end up as snacks? panther crabs do get qiute large tho and i would only keep one, they are territorial. im thankful for any input!

I personally kept a peacock Hap tank. I seemed to have lucked out when it came to the aggression that the tank had. I had females as well in my tank and had managed to breed successfully many times. I was lucky enough that I had a petco nearby that would be willing to take the cichlids off my hands when they were small. Eventually I rehome all of them and moved onto a community tank, but by the end of it I had an almost all male tank with one female OB cichlid. They were all almost full grown adults as well so they really came into their color and I know that there were some who were interested when I donated them to my local fish store.

My vote is for mbunas. Had mbunas for about 8 years. Had a pair and wound up with half the tank being born and raised in the tank :) Absolutely loved them.Then tried my luck with peacocks. Spent a ton on 3-4 inch fully colored ones just to have almost half of them loose their color within a month. I did have a yellow lab mbuna with them but he didn’t seem any more aggressive than the peacocks. Long story short, I miss mbunas so much, Just ordered my new 100 gal tank/stand from my LFS today. Cant wait to raise a new crew of mbunas.

I thought I was about to watch a fish fight :) This is great info. I never considered owning Cichlids (apart from shell dwellers). But when you said mbunas in a 40 or 55,i thought maybe I can do it.... one day. I'll check out your species profile. But I am curious... I've heard Cichlids in general are voracious eaters. Here's my take. I have to say Mbunas have the edge. Peacocks are incredible. Their pointy fins are amazingly graceful and their colors are quite beautiful. I give the Mbunas the upper hand because of their incredible variety of solid color which is lacking amongst Peacocks. Also, they have personalities which are fascinating to see. They relate to each other and the ones on top of the tank hierarchy let the less dominant ones know they are the boss.....and it's understood. Being smaller in size than Peacocks, you can really overstock your tank with Mbunas to duplicate that "swarm" of them which is seen in the Malawi lake. Beautiful to see!! So yeah, I recommend Mbunas!

I have a mixed African cichlid tank that has mbuna, haps and peacocks. My fish all get along fine. It's a big tank at 240g and I have a lot of rocks and hiding spaces so that helps I'm sure. I think the hierarchy is imperative. I have a very big tangerine tiger at 15 inches and another big Venustus at 12 inches. They generally keep order in the tank. Amazingly they don't attack each other and both seem to get along in keeping order.

In this video I noticed in your Mbuna tank has many types of Mbuna. Is this an all male tank? Beautiful, colorful tank. Can you give me tips for adjusting my stock list? I have 75g and 125g Mbuna tanks set up for a few years now. Due to aggression I ended up having to rehome a lot of extra males and unfortunately a whole group of M. hojomaylandi Chizumulu (which were beautiful fish). I still have significant aggression. 125g has Red Zebras, P. Maingano, Elongatus Chewere, S. multipunctatus, one lone L. Hongi and one lone L.trewavasae. Moving rocks in the 125g is out of the question as it is filled nearly to the top with large heavy rocks. In the 75g are M.Cobalt Zebra, C. Jalo reef, Rusties and Yellow labs.

I tried to stick with mbuna that aren't overly aggressive and most of them grew up together. I think that combo cut down on a lot of the aggression. The other thing I did is kept the structure in the tank to a minimum so no one fish can take ownership of the area.

Hi Prime Time, Thanks for sharing this video, its very informative, especially for me a newbie to fish keeping. I look forward to your other videos. I have a tank of Cichlids and I think I have a Mbuna in the midst of Peacocks. Is that a good thing to do? Its the only female. Also is it possible for her to have eggs with the Peacocks? Till next time.

They can be mixed provided the mbuna are some of the less aggressive types. Usually they don’t hybridize though.

Geez I’m not even sure what I have in my 125. If it’s a cool cichlid, I buy it - without really thinking about what lake they’re from or if they’re Mbuna, Peacock, etc. maybe I’ve been lucky. The only kind I needed to get rid of because of behavior were the Convicts. Having only 20 fish in a 125 I’m sure helps.

What exactly is all that stuff in the tank that looks like Coral next to them with all those many cichlids that I saw throughout the video is it all fake or is it real?

It usually doesn’t work - the polar will often be killed by the African cichlids.

mbunas especially demasoni and auratus are so aggressive during their breeding period, so much so that they would actually attack a peacock double their size. its crazy

Good question. I’ve found auratus and demasoni to be very aggressive. I’ve also had some really aggressive OBs. For their size Gold Occelatus are aggressive.

I generally don't put any peacocks in a 40 breeder. Maybe 8-10 mbuna if they are smaller and the less aggressive types.

i have a 600 litre tank, started out as a community tank with giant danios scissor tail rasboras and the like with a few petricolas, but I have now gone to Africans, and have got peacocks with mbunas and haps as well as some asian stuff, now I have got lucky and its a pretty calm tank, the asian stuff doesn't get hammered and the africans hang together from likomas to blue dolphins to flamebacks to peacocks, I have a multiple species cichlid tank and it's actuall working the tank is designed for haps for clear open spaces with rocky areas for the peacocks and the mbunas, no fish death no signs of stress in over 6 months. I could list the species and people would say I am crazy but theres always eceptions to a rule, I have a male ob peacock zebra who acts like my corydora lol, no fin damage no signs of stress nothing, eats swims normal no color loss just behaves like a corydora lol.

Overall a good video, but it's simply not true that a high protein causes "Malawi bloat". It's actually caused by certain sources of carbs such as wheat, rice, corn, oats, potatoes and soybeans found in some fish foods.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
I've fed a lot of cheaper foods at times over the years with high carbs and never had an issue. Feed them frozen blood worms for a while - problems happen.
@nouseforaname6846
@nouseforaname6846 2 жыл бұрын
Too much blood worms will cause bloat. Personally I don't feed blood worms. The things you have listed do cause bloat as well. Since I switched to Ron's cichlid food (pellets) which are not full of binding proteins, I've had zero issues with my peacocks and I feed twice a day everyday.
@RoswellJazzFestival
@RoswellJazzFestival 2 жыл бұрын
@@PrimeTimeAquatics It's possible that the bloodworms you fed had spoiled or been contaminated. Perhaps they had thawed and refrozen. There is no scientific research that links blood worms or any high protein foods to bloat.
