I grew up with all the music from the British Invasion. The Kinks were huge & had a lot of hits. I especially love their music from the 60's & 70's. "All Day & All Of The Night", "Set Me Free", "Tired Of Waiting For You", "A Well Respected Man", "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion", "Sunny Afternoon", "Dead End Street", "Waterloo Sunset", "Autumn Almanac" etc.

Hi Faye. Very nice reaction to one of my all time fav, songs by one of my fav. bands. This song evokes deep emotion for many people who grew up watching their "celluloid heroes" on the big screen. Sadly, many of those who were successful lived sad and lonely lives in reality. Many suffered immeasurably to become famous only to question if it was all really worth it once they got there. Many died lonely and broke as well. The song mentions tragic figures like Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, Mickey Rooney etc.. but there were many more like Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and on and on. Many people seek fame and fortune as these did only to find that these things are fleeting and most times disappointing and that in the end what really matters is how you contribute to the betterment of others and the kind of person you are.

"Mixed emotions" probably sums up many of the Kinks' songs. The idea that women are still saddened by the early romantic hero Rudolph Valentino's death, while he would be looking up their dresses, if he were still alive and the idea that movie heroes attain painless immortality, after struggling and suffering for fame exemplify such "mixed emotions" well 😅

I remember hearing this song when it came out. Because of its length it didn’t get much radio play, but I bought the album after hearing this song once. Always moves me to tears, even so many years later. Thank you for this reaction.

Sweet! What a chorus! Rudolph Valentino was the original Hollywood heartthrob. Ladies threw themselves at him all the time, so the "looking up their skirts" part might refer to a comedic scene in a movie playing against his reputation as a Casanova. He was a star in the era of silent films. He died from an appendicitis in 1926, years before the era of sound films. He was only 31. Most of the people pictured in that video were successful in Hollywood -- too many movie greats to list them all -- including some of the biggest stars of their era, like John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart. Those pictures of Hollywood Boulevard look to have been taken in the last five or ten years judging from the mix of cars in the traffic.

Valentino is "staring up women's dresses, as they sadly pass him by", meaning tourist women walking over his permanent sidewalk star on Hollywood Blvd.
