He’s definitely the best of the second best group of English songwriters. Not quite there with Lennon/McCartney Jagger/Richards but there with Townsend. Could of been better if he let his brother write more then he wouldn’t have so much filler. But still wrote 4/5 classic songs.

I'll tell you what... this guy is far more interesting than the "prick" that was mentioned. I could listen to Ray Davies all day long on a Sunny Afternoon. Very well spoken and down to Earth. Love the fact he never smoked or took drugs. Most of Lennon's interviews were bombastic, self righteous with that woman always sitting next to him adding her screeching bullshit. I'd say Tom Snyder made Lennon look good in 1975 on the Tomorrow show. He was mild mannered and engaging the whole hour long. Not many interviews like that I know of. Only had his lawyer with him. Of course, Lennon did drugs. I think when I heard of his LSD trips along with the other Beatles that's when I started being objective about their music and lifestyles, no longer a fan (short for fanatic). If anyone can please let Ray Davies know he's a cherished gift to music and the way it moves us. Thanks for all you've given the world, Ray... the memories especially. Love ya, man.

@@MrThedonhead I’d argue that Ray Davies was a much better songsmith than the Jagger & Richards partnership. I’ve also never bought onto the Beatles versus the Rolling Stones thing, primarily because, for much of those early years, the Stones seemed to be aping what the Beatles had released 6 months earlier. The same can’t be said for the Kinks. That’s why I think the real competition for the Beatles in the U.K. came from Ray and the boys. I’d have loved to be a fly on the wall when the Beatles first heard, “You Really Got Me”, “Sunny Afternoon”, “Waterloo Sunset”, “Autumn Almanac”, or “Dead End Street”.

Ray is the coolest! I read somewhere that The Kinks opened for The Beatles in the early days. John Lennon just stood there backstage just watching The Kinks in action. I'm sure he was intrigued. I always thought that The Kinks were the coolest visually. There was an element of danger watching Ray, Dave, Pete and Mick. I would say The Kinks possessed elements of both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I sometimes wonder that if The Kinks hadn't been banned from performing in the U.S., in what direction Ray would have steered the band. By the way, I absolutely dig "Too Much On My Mind" and "Fancy"from the "Face To Face" album. Those two tracks rarely get mentioned. Blessings To You Ray!

I was thinking of that the other day because it now seems fashionable from a lot of people to bash Lennon, and besides not understanding why someone is that intent on hating someone who died 40 years ago, I can only think it's because Lennon put himself out there so much, the good and the bad. Most of us feel like we have a much better grasp of who John was in his private life than Paul. Paul's always kept a certain part of his life private. For John it feels easier to be judgmental. Ultimately I think as an artist John was a genius and that's the thing I care most about. He knew he wasn't perfect, but none of us are.

The change was quite evident in '68 when Yoko got into his psyche! When The Beatles returned from India, with their wives, in March,1968, they filmed a Video of "All Together Now" for inclusion in the Yellow Submarine movie. John looked great. On May14,1968 John and Paul flew to New York to announce the formation of The Beatles' Apple Corps. Here was the new John Lennon! It is now known that Ono was flooding Lennon with letters whilst he was in India. Five days later, on May 19,1968, Lennon consummated their depraved relationship by committing adultery with Ono in his wife's home and in her bed. Cynthia Powell discovered the two the next day, Ono wearing her bathrobe! Lennon incredibly filed for divorce against Cynthia accusing her of committing adultery! John Lennon was never the same always carting his cretinous mother Yoko around engaging in embarrassing exploits with his mum Yoko -"Two Virgins" nude album cover, while he was still married to Cynthia!, "Bed Ins" for peace etc... I understand she used to accompany him to the bathroom! This topic should be studied and written about to expose the fraud that John Winston ONO Lennon truly was!

@@sspbrazil Lennon was the product of a strange duel relationship, his real mother on the one hand and his Aunt on the other. The Aunt being the one who brought him up in an almost strict fashion. There is no doubt Aunt Mimi also had 'hairs and graces' which indirectly influenced the young Lennon. Then in 1958 his mother was tragically killed not far from Mimi's house. Ironically, whilst John was at Paul's house. In Germany his best friend, and possibly his intellectual equal Stuart Sutcliffe died. Within a few years John is thrown into the limelight and too an extent that no 'English' musician had ever been exposed before. I think this made John a little bit reserved about his background, which in an attempt to protect his aunt and the history of his 'unusual' upbringing, he was guarded as to what he said, as he didn't want aspects of that life publicised. He soon realised it was always going to be out of his control. Then in 66' came the furore of the Bigger then Jessie comment which simply made John even more defensive as far as the media was concerned. When he later claimed to hate being a Beatle I am sure he meant it. When he went to live in American he was under pressure of deportation for several years. It was because of his fight to secure the green card that he never came back to England for all those years. Finally, with many of his past ghosts seemingly laid to rest, and with a new album on the charts he was shot dead. I was 19 (21 years his junior) when John was shot and I am now 59 (19 years older than he was), and I realised on the very night he died that had I been given the choice at the outset, to live my own life or swap it for his short 40 years, I would certainly have chosen my own... and I would still make that choice now. Fame seems to be an inescapable goldfish bowl, where everyone else has an opinion on everything you do. Who would want to be that monkey forever dancing to the organ grinder.

Great take. Couldn't agree more. Few things I dislike more in an interview than an interviewer trying to make his/her take the dominant one in phrasing questions (baiting like you say). Ray shows a lot of patience with this manipulative shyster.

It seems John's ego was somewhat inflated in the early Beatles days which reflects that comment he made to Ray when touring with the Kinks "If u run out of songs, we can throw you one" or something to that effect...I think by the late 60s his ego had deflated and his attitude more adjusted, as he was more apt to acknowledge and compliment other bands and artists' work

In '78 i saw them at the Fox in Atlanta - both Blondie {a few months before "Heart of Glass" was suddenly all over the radio} and Tom Petty were the opening acts. Later on that tour it was Blondie and the Cars. WIsh i could have seen that show.

@@joekavanagh7171 Seems unlikely to me - they were headlining in Atlanta that year and about to go into their arena rock phase - when their second show at the Brendan Byrne Arena was announced after the first date sold out it sold out in less than an hour - not sure if that was '82 or '83; they played there both years.

The show at Cobo Arena April 28, 1977 was local radio station WABX 10th anniversary party. Night City, former Doors Manzarek’s band, opened. Kinks followed, playing over 2 hours to an appreciative audience. Then came Heart, and the crowd had thinned out substantially by the time they hit the stage. I do remember that the Dreamboat Annie ballads were not well received, some boos, to which Ann Wilson responded “so you want to rock and roll!” and let into Crazy on you, Magic Man, and Barracuda. They closed with Zep’s Rock and Roll. Tickets were cheap, we were on the main floor, and the event lasted about 5 hours. Kinks were the heart of the show, for sure! I probably would have left after Kinks, but my ride wanted to stay.

Oh come on! Ray was a talented enough songwriter/musician in the golden era of classic rock, demonstrates he is able to express himself well enough in sentences, but your threshold for “genius” is low, and would be so inclusive due to many as similarly talented as Ray as to lack meaning. He’s a pleasant bloke, has an interesting interpretation of things, but not wholly unique. Of course songs in music, like poetry, speak to people differently, composer, audience, whether temporally or spatially separated, or together, each has an interpretation imbued with emotional attachment and meaning.That said, I’d rather have more Ray Davies around than Cardi b, 2Chainz, or Taylor Swifty....

I agree about Face To Face...there are a lot of songs,more than usual for lp's of the time,and a great variety too...all good, nothing to skip over..Village Green & Arthur also tops....and don't forget the Kink Kronikles compilation, because in the period we are talking about,a lot of great material wasn't included on the albums..holy shit,what a body of work

@Donde Merlin In the right circumstances everyone becomes an arsehole. If you add alcohol into the equation it increases the risk. However the bands in the 60's weren't always accepted by their older peers and quite often got called girls for their long hair amongst other things. I don't know the circumstances of Lennon assaulting anyone it's the first time I heard of it. The truth is that anyone can have a bad day and I can only imagine what media harassment does to your state of mind. So personally until I find out more I'm reserving judgement.

Odessey and Oracle is a classic album, and they had several great singles, but saying they are on a level with the Beatles? The Beatles discography is filled with iconic albums, and their singles (which usually were not on those albums) success is unparalleled. The Beatles had 34 top 20 (Billboard hot 100) hits, and 20 of those were number 1. That's in the US alone. Beatles on another level.

You’ve confirmed what Ray thinks , it’s the compositions people remember not the man. Every interview I’ve seen of the band they do not come across as likeable ( neither did the who ) and thats what they have to live with . The reputation for not turning up for gigs & the in fighting ( not to mention getting banned from America) hasn’t endeared their image in the long run. I love their music but never cared for the band & Ray’s continued rant about Jimmy Page after all these years is ridiculous. If Lennon or McCartney sit higher than Ray it’s because they appealed to a much broader audience & were extremely likeable.

It got into the papers that Jimmy was at the session ( which he was ) and it was presumed Jimmy played the guitar solo ( which he didn’t ) Ray claims Jimmy pulled a face when Dave was playing that solo & has bad mouthed page ever since.
