AFRO CANADA: The African Diaspora in Canada

You requested it and here it is! This week we're in Canada taking a look at black Canadian history and culture! The first recorded African man in Canada was Mathieu da Costa who arrived in 1608 and acted as an interpreter for the French coloniser Samuel de Champlain. You've surely heard of Harriet Tubman! She was instrumental in helping enslaved Africans escape to freedom in Canada. And have you heard of Africville in Nova Scotia? For 150 years it was home to a sizeable Black Canadian population, until they were forcibly displaced as the settlement was condemned by the authorities and deconstructed. We speak about all this and so much more, in this video!

I’m half Nova Scotian and half Nigerian🇨🇦🇳🇬 I had the best of both worlds growing up. Very happy my parents taught us All of Our history. I’m in turn doing the same with my own kids. So ur video was a great addition to our Black history Education. I love your channel❤️

I’m half Zambian half Nova Scotian, this was interesting. Also the first official hockey league was started by black Nova Scotians.

When I was in school there was only one time there teach Black Canadian history when I was 16 years old in just one day. But it was so minor is like we did not hardly accomplish anything. But in general in late 20th century and early 21st century this society mainly taught that Black people just immigrated here from 1960s and 70s from the Caribbean Islands.

Many people do not know African Canadian history and think you for your video especially about Black people in Nova Scotia because in that province most black people have deep family roots before Canada was country and African Canadians help build city of Halifax in 1749.

My great great great grandfather came to Ontario with Harriett Tubman. I’m from St.Catharines where the first black triplets in Canada were born.

Should mention how majority of black Canadians I’m pretty sure are West Indian decent. Followed by Africans from the continent . been here while too

While according to Wikipedia in Canadian statistic was about 60% of Black Canadians are Caribbean or of Caribbean background in 2006 but now most recent Black immigrants come straight from Africa but Caribbean's still has large percentage in the black Canadian population.

I’m of Nigerian Heritage on my Father side and African American on my Mother side I live in the USA 🇺🇸 but I’m thinking of moving to Canada 🇨🇦 is it worth the move.

No, just move to a part of the US that you like and is affordable. The culture aside from the French speaking regions is largely the same. I visited for 2 months and it felt the same. The neutral accents are the same. They couldn't tell I was American unless my accent dipped to a Southern or Northern accent and they would do a stereotypical Canadian accent for fun

Freedom Is Mine Official A young woman named Aminata is taken into slavery and escapes to the North during the Revolutionary War and then goes to Nova Scotia and returns to Africa. There is a book too. Actual book of former slaves in Canada. The miniseries came out in 2015.

Also of note is the recent large black migration from the Caribbean and now Africa. They have now overtaken the traditional black Canadians. Largest black group in Quebec is Haitian and in Ontario it is Jamaicans.

If u don’t mind me asking? I hopes it’s ok to ask this. I’m an American. Here in the USA Among Afro Americans children only around 20 percent of them have fathers. Up in Canada does the percentage rate of Afro Ametocan children having fathers is much higher?

Hi there! Great question! Well my series focuses on the African diaspora, so for the moment we are looking at black communities outside of Africa. But I will remember your suggestion for the future! It would be interesting to look at some African history too 😊

Doesn't matter where african descent people migrate to, the treatment is always the same. Especially being shipped as property by monarchy, to the new world continent. When a discussion concerning this topic, is at hand, a majority of african descent people don't realize it's all the same.
