This is a heavy duty video. I was not aware that there was a Black community and culture in Nova Scotia, much less such a significant one. Im glad to have become aware of the culture. The African diaspora is very wide spread and can be found in places where most people least expect. I love their accents.

Omg! I'm completely gobsmacked...I went to High School with these guys and never had a clue that they did this documentary. So proud of them!

The funny thing is, this year in Nova Scotia, I spent about 2 months learning about black Nova Scotian history.

Finding this is an absolute gem. Seeing Lawrence, alive and laughing. Seeing the old building, walking the halls. The nostalgia is deep.

We were at 28 Shepherd rd and Shingai was at 48 Shepherd. We hung out from 8 or 9 years old till 14 or 15. He went off to St. Pat's and I went to JL ilsley so didn't get to see him much after that. Also was in Lawrence Nyjoku class in grades 1 to 5.

Wow! The history that is hidden from even ourselves. Just finished watching Book of Negros. I knew there were blacks in Canada but I never knew how poorly they were treated. I was always under the impression that white Canadians were more progressive and accepting. Turns out they behaved just as bad if not worse. The situation in that high school was eerily similar to what I personally experienced at high school in Wisconsin. The is a chapter of the Black Experience that I am so happy to learn about.

this should be done again for today's times and reflect on this last 27 years.

Black and Indigenous people have the same goals in Nova Scotia. I have personally been discriminated at NSCC Ivany from a faculty member there named Krista Taverner who thought she controlled my outcomes based off the way I looked and who I was. The systemic racism is real in this province.

17:14 When that boy was just about 5 yrs old, his went to live with some people who lived 2 doors down from me. I am half white and for all extents and purposes, I look like I am white. That young man, at 5 yrs old, was in danger of becoming so introverted that he would have never broken out of his cage. That summer I carried him on my shoulders all over the place. Took him to fireworks, to the tours of the naval ships on Canada's Armed Forces day, bought him candy and chips, took him swimming and all sorts of things. I only hope he will remember that it was a (as far as he knows) WHITE teenage boy who became his friend and got him to talk because he would not open his mouth and speak at all for the first month. Nice to see him articulating his thought so eloquently. Collin, if you ever read this, as Jeffery who Mark from 2 doors down in Mulgrave Park is. OR ask Terry-Anne or Cornel. ;) Good luck buddy. interesting documentary, I'm reminded of a conversation I had with the Nova Scotia poet and activist and radio show host El Jones on the history of Black Canada and the many institutional racism Black Canucks face. nice to see Black Lives Matter Canada building solidarity and coalition building with the Native/Indigenous lives Matter and anti-colonial movement. but I have to say I hate Spike Lee's movies (most of them) and Jungle Fever is a junk movie.
