Guess what! For once we have an African diaspora story that doesn't begin with slavery. This week we are looking at the history of an ethnic group known as the Garifuna! There are Garifuna communities across Central and North America including the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Belize. But today we will be focusing on the Garifuna community in Honduras. Find out their unique and incredible story in this video.

The Garifuna are connected to Haiti from their Arawak roots. Garifuna is not only African but also Arawak with a smidgeon of Karina. Haiti was settled by the Arawak.

@@HOPROPHETA Well the history of the New World was primarily shaped by 3 major cultures: the European, African & Native American culture. But the Garifuna culture is predominantly west African. Just like the Haitian culture is predominantly west African. Amerindians/Native Americans didn’t have the djembe drum. It was never used by Native American people. And it was never apart of Native American culture. The djembe is a drum that originated in west Africa….And has always been the primary instrument of west Africa. And djembe drumming & dancing is the very heartbeat of Garifuna culture. It is literally the focal point & backbone of practically every event, festival & celebration which takes place among the Garifuna people. (As seen in the video.)

They have represented the Honduran culture best than any other group. Their music, dance and food is huge pride for Honduras. However, the support they get in return is less than cero. I hope the Government pay more attention to this wonderful group and help them. Very talented people, hard-working and humble. They deserve better...

The whole country supports but yea the government could definitely do more they dont do enough . But they honestly don't do much for anyone but them self . It sucks but is basically almost if not every country in Latin America governments don't care about their culture of people. The people tho love and support and a lot represent Honduras country in soccer music and more like it was said. There's a saying in Honduras I haven't visit in so long but it used to be saying I'm sure it still is that goes. You are not Honduran if you don't dance punta. Punta music has hit top 100 billboards music. I look Samoan but I have garifunas In my blood from my dad side. I was born in Honduras 🇭🇳 love and miss it. Recommend visiting the coast and the islands definitely in the bucket list if yall haven't gone. You won't be disappointed. The beaches are so many. Garifuna / Black Caribs are descendance of Mali Sultan Abu-Bakr II expedition who the left the Mali empire around 1312 to find the end of the Atlantic ocean. in 1312 Mansa Musa the richest man ever succeeded Sultan Aba Bakr when he did not return from his expedition. This ship wreck narrative is a lie b/c there would have been some white Spanish blood within the Garifuna genes and there are none. Plus there are no Spanish words in the Garifuna language.

@@iam2908 I have and reject that the curses are in any way for the Garifuna. It speaks of eating one's own children and more. Doctrine never comes from one scripture. That is simply error.
