Did you know that Alexander Puskin, the founder of modern Russian literature, was mixed-race? His great-grandfather was Abram Gannibal, an African-born esteemed military commander and engineer! All that and more in this video on the African diaspora in Russia.

This series is wonderful. It shows that African people have salted this planet in so many places, contributed in ways never taught in the history books. I am looking for a George Dickason who traveled with Robeson to Russia in the 40s. He was my great uncle. I would love to know more about his life and if he stayed in Russia. Actually, the part of the old USSR he lived in may be known as Ukraine now. It would be a blast to find out that I have family I can contact, maybe visit!

Gannibal was not an enslaved African at all, he was Peter the Great's godson and rose to a position of very high prominence in both the Russian court and in military service And no the Abkhaz black people were not slaves either. By Russian law of the time any slaves arriving on its territory were automatically free men (although the same didn't apply to serfs who weren't much better off than slaves). Those Africans were from some Ottoman ship that got wrecked on the coast, something like that; and then just settled in Abkhazia for lack of anything else to do About Africans leaving the USSR after 1939 I never heard about that. But why would it be a thing, the war started just 2 years after that so can't imagine there would be enough time for a change in the racial climate. If they left, it was probably because of the war itself. There certainly was some tension between the locals with African students in the 50s, 60s, 70s. On the whole, poorly researched; you can do better :P

@@donnatate6327 Sorry for disturbing you a month after your comment. There are many theories on how Abram arrived in Russia, however it is a fact that upon his arrival he was freed, later achieving high positions in the government, travelling with Peter the Great throughout Europe (potentially influencing the contemporary European opinions on Africans) and was even considered by Peter to be his adopted son.

@@donnatate6327 Not sold, he was gifted to him by Pyotr Andreyevich Tolstoy (great-grandfather of the celebrated writer Leo Tolstoy) who thought Peter the Great would want one like the other European royals. Being the mad lad he was, Peter the Great adopted him and personally tutored him taking pretty much every where he went. Gave him a stellar education far beyond most would get at that time and his patronage, his daughter also considered him her brother.

There is no way Abram Gannibal could be from Cameroon. 1st because Ottomans' authority never stretched that far as Cameroon (and Abram was presented to the Tsar as a gift from the Ottomans) 2nd the Turks called him Arap for a reason: "arap" means "arab" in Turkish. Most people of Ethiopia and Eritrea are Semitic, that's why the were called Arabs, whereas people of Cameroon are black African, and there is a different word for them in Turkish - "zenci".

@@Alephnull2024 the American one drop rule had economic causes and was not an ethnic notion. The goal was to leave out offspring with slaves from inheritance and maximize the number of slaves. In the Carrebean there was no one drop rule because there was no policy to exclude mixed Race from inheritance, therefore soon appeared a mixed planter class in the Carrebean. These are all notions of settler societies in the new world, and have nothing to do with other world regions.

he original people that inhabited North Africa, original Hebrews and their Egyptian neighbors( Don't forget the Pharoahs), southern Europe, parts of Middle East and the Moors who ruled Europe for 700 years were black people. They were the first voyagers of discovery. They travelled around the world. Christopher Columbus found them in the Americas. Wherever they went, they also built pyramids. Most of the voyagers got stuck because they lost the technology to get back. Using the theory that the earth was one land mass doesn't carry water. Guess this is because people think it was impossible for blacks to have the technology to sail. Stereotypes. Though scattered and thousands of miles apart, the tradition and culture remains similar. Question is...at what point did the Arabs hijack the Egyptian treasures and Europeans hijack the Bible characters and voyages of discovery? And at what stage did the black group got weakened and slavery start?
