The record-breaking film "Black Panther" is the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for "Best Picture." It features a predominantly black cast and gives black boys and girls a chance to imagine themselves as superheroes. "Black Panther" is also an example of Afrofuturism, a cultural movement has long been part of African-American arts. Alex Wagner reports.

The afrofuturism artwork and stories I've seen have been really lovely and inspiring. It's nice to see such positive and truly hopeful art in a time that often leaves me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. I would like to see even more varieties of ethnocentric and class-centric futurism genres that offer a hopeful eye to tomorrow. Blessings and positivity to all who took the time to read my comment! May we all have brighter days ahead.

black history? Africa alone consists of more than 7000 major tribes. Which tribe or nation are these people talking about? They are as generalizing as the racism they wish to battle

@@PHlophe Could be yeah, I don't know. I do know I would find it very weird if someone talked about "white history".. Like what would "white history" be about? Russian? Spanish? Swedish? all those cultures are really different. It makes no sense to talk about culture like that. I would find it offensive if I were them.. Also.. what is "black" anyway? Are arabic people black. ?Are native americans black? Where precisely does "brown" end and "black" begin? Are eskimo's black? I could go on and on. I think black history sounds powerfull and meaningfull but when you analyse it closely, it's empty. Devoid of meaning.

How can you be proud of something that cannot be defined? Where does "brown" end and "black" begin? Or is black simply everything that is not white? Like.. I want to be proud with you but.. it just seems a little meaningless? I'm arab. Am I black or white?
@MiJeyra
@MiJeyra 3 жыл бұрын
@@Habib_Osman Hi Habib, I didn't have to answer your question since I know you're not oblivious of the world we live in. From the video the word black is all over to mean Africans. But from a point of knowledge and common sense we know that the terms whiteness and people of color (in the various spectrums) was a societal notion created to accord white privilege and justify oppression and discrimination against darker complexions what I'd rather call richer complexions. Though black is used to define Africans, we full well know that Africans come in a diverse spectrum of the brown color, from light to ebony dark. So in real sense there's nothing like blackness or whiteness. We also see dark Asians and light Asians. So are these black brown or white people. So the issue of color is a weapon of segregation and evil. To answer your question, I meant African and you're rightly Arab, not white, brown or black🙂

To me this is just means of further dividing people! Look this is a country where equal opportunity to succeed is greatest in the world. We're Americans first. But to add additional labels on divides people more. I'm just not believing how we can be so ridiculous. I want to see good writing, stories, fantasy or science fiction pose ,sure. But color labeling to me is just crazy and something I don't want to be part .

How is having more Afrocentric stories divisive? Do you question all sci-fi in this way? Was HG Wells being "divisive" by setting War of the Worlds or the Time Machine in Europe? Or was he just writing what he knew, creating a good story? Every human character in Star Wars is white; was that "divisive" too? Come on, now...

Hopefully, Afro futurism will lead blacks to be personally responsible for creating prosperity within their communities instead of relying on government entitlements. I still believe that if blacks focused on fixing their broken families, obtaining a quality education, and pursued intellectual careers; their lives would improve significantly. Afro futurism is a better alternative to playing “victim” all the time. If the Black Panther movie was the impetus for this movement, then this proves that whites are still heavily influencing blacks to make progress. Whites actually created the Underground Railroad and did most of the fighting in the Civil War against slavery. Likewise, it was white men who created the Black Panther character that so many blacks are proud of. As usual, blacks wants to hog all the credit for the endeavors of whites to build black self esteem. The BLM movement has never resulted in any thing positive. The live action Black Panther movie would have been made without the existence of the hateful BLM movement. All the Avengers characters, including Black Panther, had animated movies first. But if this makes blacks feel good about themselves, then so be it.

@DRAKKENFIRE22 It's always interesting to me how white people who've never experienced the black perspective always have so much to say about it. Would blacks be permitted to do the same for the white perspective? Of course not. Also, the Black Panther character was created by whites, but was BASED on African figures. So, Africa was the ultimate inspiration, not the white mind.
