Spot on. There is one race - the human race. Racism is a thing, but it's based on race, which scientifically speaking, isn't actually a thing. Maybe when humanity is fighting to the death against a superior alien race one day, we'll finally realise that we have more that unites us than divides us, but it will be too late by then..... 😕

In an age where everyone is forgotten except the likes of Tupac, Biggie, Ice Cube, and LL-Cool J, etc... (2 had to die and the others had to become movie stars) I'm glad that you are doing something like this. We should remember our positive black entertainers without them having to be in the news or die. Missy, Timberland, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, that whole clique influenced millions of us in a positive way as pre-teens and teens. From the way we talk to our style of dress, even our choices of who we consider attractive... They DON'T get enough credit for all they've done for the community.

@@sandra-jones well Tupac was more of a "do as i say not as i do". In the beginning he was a good influence for the kids who grew up with nothing and felt like all they had was what they were raised in. But unfortunately he got too involved in gangs and it ultimately lead to his demise. But i wouldn't go as far to say that nothing he ever said or did was beneficial. If people think that then they probably didn't listen much. As for Biggie i dont really remember him ever talking about bigger societal problems so...yeah he didn't do much for people lol

Afrofuturism is legit one of my favorite African/African American Lit Sub-genre as well as fashion/aesthetic and music genre. Janelle Monae's ArchAndroid/Dirty Computer musical story telling (see her albums in chronological order to put story together), Missy's videos, Timbaland's music composition, Black Panther (comics), Static Shock, and many others are such amazing examples of afrofuturism.

@@DrT0705 Kool Keith is a Bronx emcee from a group called the Ultramagnetic MCs. They came out in the mid-late '80s. I might take it back a little further to somebody like Rammellzee, or Afrika Bambaataa himself (with the Soul Sonic Force), who helped start this whole Hip-Hop thing. Going to assign this to my class. Great example for students of how to do media analysis that makes an argument supported through close analysis, knowledge of genre, cites others' work as means to enter into and extend scholarly and public conversations not only on the specific media object (the videos) but larger issues of importance (Afrofuturism, self-representation, resistance against white erasure, etc). Thank you both! As for favorite Missy Elliot video? Whew too many to choose just one. Curious how much students will be familiar with her work.

The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) Why?! Because it's one of the dopest video's of the 90's...Let me explain: #1 She's killing it in a trash bag. #2 The Cameo's (SWV, 702, Yo-yo, Total, Lil Kim, Puffy, Da Bray and Lil Cease). I think it shows a time when the music industry was just chill and everyone was good with one another regardless of what label they were signed to. #3 This song introduced me into wanting to know more about samples because of Timbaland's use of I can't stand the rain by Ann Peebles.

I‘m not black, but I want to educate myself and I find this channel is really interesting 💚 Edit: a lot of people said that black culture isn’t meant to be shared. I disagree and think that every culture should be shared. I can’t speak for black people, but as someone that is mixed and has two cultures so to speak, I think that we all can learn a lot from each other. One of the comments mentioned the Kardashians cornrows, it was deleted so I couldn’t read it fully unfortunately. I heard that black people are angry (maybe not the right word) that white people wear these hairstyles and are being celebrated and when black people wear that same hairstyle (dreadlocks for example) they are discriminated against, for instance in their workplace (please correct me if I‘m wrong). I think that white people wearing that hairstyle could really help black people with that. I understand that it feels bad when for instance Kyle Jenner does cornrows and does nothing for the rights of black people. It’s maybe a bad comparison, but I feel extremely disgusted when companys sell all their pride merch in june, but don’t do anything for LGBT+ rights. What I don’t understand is why judge other non black people when they wear that hairstyle? It’s like saying „you aren’t Indian, you cannot do Yoga“ or „you can’t eat Sushi when you are not Japanese“. Last I wanted to say that I didn’t mean any harm when I posted this comment, I‘m sorry if it offended anyone and I hope I found the right words. If you disagree with me, feel free to tell me. Have a nice day 🌼

Miss Elliott is up there with Lauryn Hill. These are our Black/Afro Elite who have a message of Greatness to share. L. H. was inducted to Rock Roll Hall Fame. So you know M.E. Will get hers too. 💯💯💯Could you please added the other cohost back? I think you need the 3 Musketeers to keep learning fun but truthful and that’s why I love this channel. Keep up the good work with educating the Others and telling them to Respect our Culture (with spit coming out my mouth) lol. Do you have a Twitter and Instagram handle ?

Missy Elliott is such an inspirational woman. Growing up as a girl born in 1990 I really loved her music and the creativity of her music videos. She was a role model for girls of my generation, and I wanted to grow up to be the kind of woman that I perceived her to be. In an era of hypersexualized young women in media and especially music videos, Missy Elliott really stood out to me as a strong, talented, creative, beautiful, confident, aristic woman.

Another awesome video! Idk if anyone's ever told you Heallease, but you look a lot like Ngzoi Paul from Da Kink in My Hair! I had to Google to make sure you weren't her going under a new name 😂

Lisa Lefteye Lopes from TLC also took on Afro-futurism. You can see that in her solo album "Supernova" and the style of the girl group she co-founfed, "808" and the visual style of TLC after "Fanmail", "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty". Also, The music video, "Scream" from Janet and Michael Jackson was such a hit and what may been the first representation of Afro-futurism in the 1990s.

What you said at 6:50 really speaks to me. Listening to the instrumental of Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat", "Try Again", etc. and some tracks off of Solange's album 'When I Get Home' (such as "The Sound of Rain"), one could easily imagine them being killer OST on a video game. Black people and the masterpieces we create are so versatile. I feel pride.

Missy made me want to be a choreographer growing up. She was my favorite artist! She really gave us super extraordinary visuals and images that gave you a glimpse in alter-realities and imaginative worlds. I agree she empowered us thru Afrofuturism depicting us untraditional and whimsical. My favorite video was The Rain simply bc it was my favorite song of hers for the longest but I loved the Super Fly video and Get Your Freak On vid ♥️ Nostalgic!

I really, really love this channel, for the reason you said- "hidden figures." I've been listening to this lecture series called "The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World" and it tells all these ancient stories we rarely hear, of commoners and otherwise subjugated peoples. And I just realized I literally don't have a single black woman as a friend at this point in my life. I have had them in the past, and I'm sure will in the future. But for now, I'm 100% sure I'm missing out on a lot. And this is such a well done channel telling black women's stories. I'm really pleased to have found it. I've watched 'em all! Thanks ya'll!
