After 35 Years, the Cast of 'Facts of Life' Are Closer Than Ever

The Insider With Yahoo co-anchor Thea Andrews joined the cast of the '80s sitcom Facts of Life for the show's 35th anniversary, held at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, and found out the cast members are still extremely close. Even after children, marriages, and divorces, they still turn to Mrs. Garrett, played by Charlotte Rae, for advice. Lisa Whelchel, who played Blair Warner in the show, said, "She gave me some great advice that I can't actually repeat. … And I will continue to go to her for advice." Nancy McKeon, who played Jo Polniaczek, added, "She probably told her to be her extraordinary self and enjoy her life." In its 209 episodes, Lisa, a devout Christian, refused to have her character lose her virginity, so Mindy Cohn's character, Natalie, had that experience instead. Lisa said, "I was very aware from early on that we had a lot of influence on young girls. Losing your virginity is not going to be taken care of in 17 minutes and a couple of commercials." I grew up watching this TV show. It's amazing how well Lisa and Nancy handled being on-screen enemies when they were actually off-screen real friends and still are today. They portrayed their characters very well. I will always love Facts of Life. Thank you for sharing this amazing video! I applaud Lisa for what she did refusing an episode. She's right, this TV show was a model for young girls everywhere and still is today.

You truly do take the good and the bad. I didn't love everything about the 80s but sure do miss the great TV sitcoms of those days - and theme songs!

no! the Facts of Life was good family sitcom. Friends, even though I watched it when it was on TV was not a family sitcom! (I guess back then, I didn't see stuff in it that I 'see' now). Leave Nancy as Jo.

i love friends and facts of life, i’m sure lisa and nancy would’ve been perfect as rachel and monica, but it would’ve been their show, they were already famous and known for their chemistry onscreen, so i think they would’ve stolen the spotlight a bit from the other characters. i think the reason friends worked so well was because they were 6 unknown people, and the show was equally about the 6 of them, there were no main characters and supporting characters between the six friends. but honestly they would’ve been so good as monica and rachel it’s almost a shame it didn’t happen, oh well

Julie Anne Haddock who played Cindy in first season was the BEST..So talented unfortunately she got screwed over in foolish downsizing.

I was referencing Julie Anne Haddock who was a little before your time. Nancy is talented but so was Julie Anne Haddock. Her biggest mistake was not leaving show all together like Molly Ringwald did. If you watch FOL Lost girls video you will see Julie Anne was last fired. FOL first season was cheesy good fun which appealed too a very small audience like me. After season one show took on a more serious tone with character development. But too your point Nancy McKeon was and is a very good actress.

It was weak because it was a late summer replacement which usually don't have much success. The show should have debut in the fall. Then they get an order for 9 more episodes which were shown sporadically in March of 1980 until June 1980 not smart either. I cant argue with you because the show after season 1 was a great success. In many ways it was set up to fail. It was initially considered a mocked up version of Welcome Back Kotter. You do have to wonder if they kept a different combination of those girls if the results would have been the same?? Molly Ringwald was well liked and so was Julie Anne Haddock.

Thomas Dieterle Molly appeared in a couple season 2 episodes as a background character. I know I saw her in the lunchroom scene when Blair threw the pie in the uppity girls face because she gave Jo a hard time.

Molly did just one episode in season 2, which was the second episode or episode 15. She hated going back. Julie Piekarski and Julie Anne Haddock and Felice Schachter did a handful of episodes.

Nancy never got the shot she deserved! Watch videos of her in the shows Can't Hurry Love and Style & Substance... you can TOTALLY see Monica in her! Would have loved that outcome, but Courtney did a great job as well.

Maybe that's when she was filming 'The Housewives' of Atlanta' so she couldn't be there. This was probably filmed in L.A. or New York, and I think Kim Fields lives in Atlanta all year round.
