This week’s Urban Valor episode features MARSOC veteran and retired Master Sergeant, Danny Santos. Danny grew up in the rampart district of South-Central Los Angeles. He enlisted in the Marine Corps to escape the gang-infested streets of LA. His parents migrated to the U.S. from El Salvador in the 1970s and at the age of 10, Danny had to endure his father taking his own life.
As a young Lance Corporal in the Marines, Danny was awarded the Silver Star. After being shot and blown up by a grenade he completely disregarded his own safety, exposed himself to enemy fire, and drug one of his wounded teammates to safety. Danny would go on to serve 15 years in the MARSOC community as a Critical Skills Operator with 9 deployments under his belt. He leaves us with what he’s done to adapt and overcome the challenges of transitioning out of the military.
Danny Santos is incredibly courageous and a true warrior. We're so thankful he sat down with Josh Gutierrez of Urban Valor to share his incredible story as a combat veteran who served 9 deployments and was wounded in battle.

Jason was a great guy. He was in 3/4 kilo with me before he went to 3/7. Was about to EAS and decided he wanted to deploy before he got out. Remember the day we found out what he did to save his brothers, we were in Falujah at the time. Can't put into words what he is to his fellow Marines.

I was in Kilo 4/2 under Cpl Jason Dunham. It is an honor to have served with these warrior gods. MSgt Santos and Cpl Dunham were the best of the best of all the Marines in 3/7. A true honor to know and serve with these guys.

An absolutely unique person of character. He has a road map on managing problems and coming up with a solution and I've never heard, in basic steps how to overcome problems. I salute up and hope all that happens in the future is blessed for your present and future generations. P.S. He didn't pay me for the comment.

Danny, I thank you for your interview and military service. I was at Camp Horno 1/9 about 10 years before you. It was a different brother. I am glad you were able to gain much internal understanding of who you are and how you define yourself. I commend you on getting your degrees. A university degree will pave the way with the right mindset. After I left the Marines, I enrolled at a university in Chicago, knocked out my degree in Political Science/International Relations and Sociology. I too was an 0311. I strongly applaud you. Stay out of comfort zones and keep growing & looking out for your family. About your father, you are not alone. I also had a father who took the wrong road. Read Jack Canfield's book Principles of Success. Stay strong brother and be well

Holy f**k, the Marines is like the French Foreign Legion. It is blessed with smart, tough people like this man; who is crazy enough to go against the Marine Corps? I remember Chicano Marines at Pendleton came back from a weekend in East L.A... oh my cousin got shotgunned at our party, my brother got stabbed this weekend at a party... Constant. They grow up in that then join the Marines. The USMC is gifted with these people

When I got out of the army I didn't apply for any benefits even though I had them and a honorable discharge. I just didn't believe that I deserved them. That was there for people who lost everything until I met a retired first Sargent, he explained to me like such. If you were roofing and fell off of a roof would you file for workers compensation. Well that's what the disability and benefits are so go down and file today do you need a ride over to the court house
