My review of the Obsidian WE66. I've been sharpening knives by hand for years, does this do a better job? Is it worth it? Can it sharpen my more "interesting" knives?

I personally prefer the WE because I can work both sides without having to rotate the blade. But I do like that this TsProf sharpens the knives without dropping the metal shavings on top of the moving parts of the sharpener.

I have one. Very expensive, but great! I’ll never understand people with knife collections worth thousands of dollars, with cheap sharpeners.

Awesome to hear that you like yours. Having used it now, it’s hard to imagine not using it. The edge holds up for much longer as well, which makes me happy.

I like my OG WE. It takes a bit longer to set up, but it’s rock solid and works great.

If you've never tried a sharpener of carborundum they are worth the money which usually isn't much to begin with. They are a bit aggressive at taking away metal so be careful with that but it makes a dull blade sharp again quickly. I've a sharpener made out of that which was my grandfather's and is so large it could easily be used by my great great great grandchildren.

Is there a significant difference between the Obsidian 66 and the WE60? Which model provides the best capability to sharpen most types of knives: kitchen, outdoor, and pocket knives?

I hope they improved their clamp. The current one is sub-par. W.E. excels at plateau sharpening. Being able to see the blade and stone contact is a huge plus. Sadly the after market stone selection not so good for WE. Not a fan of the kiddy color coded stones. Getting ready to upgrade my KME and decide on the K03Pro. There are things I like about W.E. but over all it's not for me. I need a double clamp for long knives. Your miles may vary. Bottom line, if works for you and it's want you want, then by all mean enjoy it. I still wouldn't mind having one though. I like everything sharpening!

Good thoughts! In talking to the WE team, they did mention they put a lot of work into their new clamp. So far, I’ve seen no issues. I have a background in machining and fabrication, so I am picky about the design of such things. 😅 Thanks for the comment!

i read that full flat grind knives have a problem slipping in this vice? have you had that issue? do you miss the tension adjustment on the we130?

does it work for kitchen knifes too?
@grimgranite
@grimgranite Жыл бұрын
Yes, it works for kitchen knives. Pretty much any knife less than 15” long and less than 3/16” thick. They also told me they are sending me a new vice that will accept knives up to 1/4” thick… so cleavers are probably possible as well.

Well that leaves out a lot of Cold Steel and TOPS knives. They need to widen that grip.

They just released a new, wider vice that accommodates up to 1/4” spines.

I just started your video but I wanted to ask before watching if you’re gonna mention what a nightmare the clamp can be. It’s a great sharpener but severely limited on what it can securely clamp. Now if you’re someone who uses a light enough touch then you’d probably be able to handle a few more blade shapes. 2 MAJOR issues with this sharpener is the total surface area of the clamping surface is tiny. This greatly diminishes your option for clamping a blade. For narrow blades like the Benchmade 940 forget it. I was trying to find a high end sharpener for knive like my spyderco Paysan and my Hawk deadlock if you’re reproducing the knife you better damn well be sure you have to blade clamped rock solid or you’ll end up shifting the blade in the clamp (but over time) notmally resulting in extra material being removed from the wrong areas of the blade requiring you to start the sharpening process over

I haven’t experienced any issues at all so far. Perhaps their vice design has been improved since you’ve tried it? I have sharpened blades from 1/4” with their new vice all the way down to the small blade on a Swiss Army knife with no issues. I think using their shim pack that they give you with it really helps too for blades that are very thin or have a high polish. Thanks for watching!

Generation Pro 3 Vs WE66 Obsidian?
@user-hm6yo4ko9s
@user-hm6yo4ko9s Жыл бұрын
if its just you and some kitchen knives and pocket knives, go we66 because of the superior dualcam vice clamp. get the gen 3 pro only if you do knives at volume and don't want to do a real volume setup like a tormek t8. no idea why you would a gen 3 actually, maybe if you are a business and want to do microbeveling after setting your bevel on a belt or a wheel. gen 4 announced at blade show 2023 too so you have to think that there are going to be some deals on the gen 3 probably later on this year.

what the hell is going on with KZfaq? are you not cool if you don't have glowing neon lights behind you? the problem with the wicked edge is, if you have OCD it feeds right into it. and if you don't you'll end up with it!!! I've been doing KZfaq since 2007 I still don't have any glowing lights!!!! wicked edge better get with it. I watch all their videos never see any glowing lights.
