After EU's Tariffs on Chinese EVs, Beijing Investigates European Pork | Vantage with Palki Sharma
In a tit-for-tat move, Beijing has opened a probe into pork supplies from the European Union (EU). This comes after Brussels decided to move forward with a plan to slap tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicles (EVs). The bloc has been raising complaints about the "oversupply" of Chinese EVs. The import tariffs were supposed to contain it. According to Bloomberg, China is the EU’s biggest overseas market for pork. The EU's pork trade with China was worth $1.83 billion last year. Sellers in Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands are said to be the biggest beneficiaries of this trade. Palki Sharma tells you more.

As a Brazilian: China you are welcome to buy pork from Brazil. We have other products like coffee, soy, corn, beef, chicken, fruit juice, planes etc. Let the European sell their products to the US and vice versa. Let them sell their expensive products to each other.

Great move by China. A tariff war will hurt European farmers far more than Chinese EV companies. Export represents a tiny percentage of Chinese EV companies sales but that's not the case for European farmers. In addition, the farmers are politically powerful. I think the Chinese are well prepared and are able to execute their counter attack with high precision. I think the long term solution is for Chinese EV firms to set up factories inside EU. BYD has already led the way with their new factory in Hungary. This would be a win-win and also a face-saving step down for the EU bureaucrats. The Chinese government, on the other hand, is not opposed to having their factories move closer to the end-markets.

But you forgot where EU will hurt itself. China will export technology to EU countries like Hungary to produce EVs and sell them in the European market, also what is bad for EU is that big auto maker like MB, VW and BMW are now producing cars in China, all these makers rely on Chinese for EV batteries and battery material. The pork is just one of many imports that will be used as a starting point of tariff battle, the other thing on the line can be European made cars export to China. In 2023 EU export 38 billion dollars worth of cars to China and imported about 9 billion dollar worth of Chinese EV, China can also target large displacement ICE cars from EU for next round of tariff, the country that will hurt the most in a war of cars will be Germany.

Indians have less than 200 kilograms of food per capita per year, a level that is actually comparable to Africa, and even worse than some African countries. Called the world's largest country India is located in the South Asian plains, abundant rainfall, 51% of the country's land can be used as arable land, is three times as much as China, geographic conditions are so superior, how the food production is far lower than in China, and even per capita food is not as good as in Africa? @@ab36935 On a per car basis, the Chinese subsidies are trivial. BYD, the top Chinese EV car maker had subsidies of $3.7B USD over 4 years and they sell 3M cars a year. So the subsidies amount to about $300 a car. Just a rounding error when talking about car prices. If the EU thinks subsidies are an issue, there's nothing stopping them from subsidizing their cars just like they already heavily subsidize their agricultural industry. In fact, I'm pretty sure existing EU auto subsidies are already well over $300 USD per car.

Everyone around the world should know by now that unnecessary high tariffs from one country on another , would set off a tit for tat trade war , totally unproductive for all concerned . In this case, China has a few counter moves for the EU lack of foresight in starting a trade conflict when it’s unnecessary to begin with , in lieu of the Chinese EV imports into the European market. If the EU wishes to appease the U.S. in its move by imposing high tariffs on China’s EVs then China will set off the ‘ boomerang’ effects on these countries.! The notion here is that, why must one play with fire when u can get badly burnt .?

Why would China limit itself to tariffs due to the overproduction of pork from Europe? EVs are not at all environment friendly, the chemicals used in batteries is highly corrosive and EV batteries are useless after a few years of use as their efficiency keeps decreasing after that comes the bigger problem i.e. disposing or recycling the discarded batteries. Besides mining & refining the Lithium used in batteries is also very polluting.

The bottom line is EU NEEDS EV cars. Their energy supply is seriously strained. They need the high performance of EV cars to reduce their dependency on gas. Chines EV cars, especially BYD hybrid, can travel 13K miles with a full charge and 2.8 liter of gas. This is serious energy saver. EU needs it. For China, 38% tariff on electric car is no big deal. It has very high quality and price ratio. Even with 38% tariff, Chinese electric cars are very competitive. In fact, the tariff forces China to compete in the premium price sector. Instead dumping cheap cars at cheap price, they will deliver high quality cars to justify the premium price. Chinese electric cars have high quality and load with features. With this tariff, Chinese car makers simply ADD MORE features to justify the premium price. It is good. China does not need to compete at the cheap price category. For EU, this will give EU car makers some breathing room as Chinese cars won't wipe them out completely. Long term, it is most likely that car companies like BMW and Benz will "outsource" their EV car sector to Chinese car factories set up in EU, like Hungary or Spain. By doing this, they can keep the gas car market (as almost all of their manufacturing capacity, experiences and patents are in gas cars), yet at the same time, they can produce EV cars, through their Chinese partners in EU (maybe even some cars from China itself, just like Tesla or Ford shipping cars from China to US directly) This tariff, although looks high, is a signal that EU ACCEPTS Chinese EV cars. The ambiguity is out of the way with explicitly decision that if you want to come in, put up 38% tariff. Now Chinese EV car companies can start producing cars and have marketing plans to sell their cars in EU, knowing full well that there is no more uncertainty. The investors are happy too. Chinese EV cars stocks are actually rising as the result of this tariff decision. China, of course, will pretend to fight the EU against this "unfair" tariff by slapping their wrist. The decision is opening up investigation on EU pork products. It is just a $2B market and the investment will eventually fizzle out. All in all, this is a Win-Win situation.

Europe, and the U.S. need to adopt trade legislation/policy that is reciprocal to foreign nations, a.k.a. Fair trade vs. Open trade. If China (or India) require all Western companies to have a domestic partner that owns 40% or more and domestic production of xx% of the product to enter the domestic market, make that requirement binding on any Chinese company that eventually wants to export to the West, e.g. require BYD to have a 40% European partner and EU based assembly/construction to sell in the EU.

China is heavily subsidizing their cars and selling them at breakeven or even loss point. This is their general business strategy with almost everything to enter new markets and bank on market capture later on. They also benefit from substantially low development costs vs west. On top of that it's top producer of electric batteries, so it is kind of asserting an unfair competition. West's answer seems to be logical but ultimately people will lose. Cars will become more expensive.
