I don’t think Hailan’s love of Ruyi had to necessarily be romantic. Ruyi seemed like an elder sister bordering on mother for Hailan. If you think about it, other than yongqi, Ruyi was literally the only loved one she had. I don’t think Hailan’s family was super high ranked, and most of her education was likely given to her by Ruyi. So from the day she was SA’d to Ruyi’s death, she was the only person besides her son who she had any sort of intimate connection with. Ruyi helped her deal with her trauma, kept her safe, taught her; she pretty much raised her. As we saw with Chun, Hailan found some of the wives safe to spend time with, but they were never truly friends(good call considering how easily manipulated Chun was). None of them could really be trusted at the end of the day. And within the harem I’d argue Hailan was all Ruyi had besides the children, Suoxin, and Rongpei. The doctors and eunuchs don’t really count cuz they couldn’t be around all the time. And Suoxin and Rongpei were great but they didn’t really have to worry about being schemed against by other concubines or their kids killed. They were basically locked in a prison with only one another to rely on.

Ruyi was ready to scold Hailan for taking such a risk while pregnant, I think Hailan went too far.

High rank = noble birth = educated. Mothers primarily teach their children before they get a more formal education. Low rank = not so noble birth, less educated. It's fine if you are in an ordinary family, but you are raising a prince, so high standards need to be met. She was a Guiren then promoted to Pin. Not only was she allowed to raise a prince, she also became the mistress of the palace. Meaning she lived in the main palace and lesser titled concubines reside in her side palaces, effectively giving her power to manage above them. She can punish them, discipline them but also expected to teach them manners and the ways of the palace. Hailan later on got her son back when she was a Fei, by then Yongqi was already in school and had good foundations as a child having been raised by Ruyi and Hailan together. In comparison to Ling's 1st daughter who was given to Ying Fei. She was deemed unfit to be a mother, got demoted so her daughter can be raised by someone who is deemed fit to raise a princess. The difference is, she also had the right to keep the baby away from her birth mother to avoid being influenced with her bad behaviours. Whereas Ruyi and Hailan were good friends. Yongqi might live in Ruyi's palace but Hailan is welcome there anytime. Also Ruyi asked her to transfer to her palace but Hailan wanted to stay in her residence. Which was a good decision since she was promoted to Pin and basically just moved over to Yanxi's main palace which used to be Ruyi's.

its crazy concubines cabt raise their children just because their "rank is low " ...why ??? Lind of cruel to make them pregnant and then take away the child. I can understand of they did some crime ...but not just because of the rank. This is my first Chinese period drama and its one of the things/customs I find very baffling and shocking. They seem to pass around kids a lot. Why on earth a mother should be separated from her child without any valid reason.
