Huh. Never really gave the Cakes a second thought until now. That's actually some great explanation. I have a new respect for the two.

I didn't think of the infidelity joke until it was pointed out to me. I thought they were just spewing nonsense then handwaving it. Why is it I never notice those kinds of things until they're pointed out to me?

It's funny because I DID always used to love Cadence and Shining as a couple for the same reasons you listed. I never realized how much more depth the Cakes have as a married couple. It would be so wonderful if more attention is paid to them in the future. They'd be wonderful for teaching lessons on communication and teamwork.

And in more recent developments, we found out Mrs. Cake was the one who changed her name when she got married.

The Cakes have ALWAYS been my favorite two minor characters. I honestly love the whole fact that they're pretty much a normal married couple, running a business together, employing the craziest pony in town(Fully knowing how she can get and yet appreciating some of it- lets face it, Pinkie may get to them once in a while, but I bet she's the best one for the job with her gusto, encyclopedic knowledge of everypony in town, and all.), and just taking all the weirdness that just comes from living in Equestria in stride. Course, I love cheerilee too, but it's cause my mom was a teacher(a single one at that), so I can guess half the stuff she's thinking.

You read Slice of Pony Life too?! :D It's a great comic made by one of my most favorite artists in the fandom, so it's nice to see some more appreciation for it.

The cakes are the freakin' spitting image of my family. My mom is a bit... well plump. And A bit shorter than my dad. My dad is unbelievably Thin... he had gallbladderproblems. Also he's really tall. I'm really hyper, and all my friends say I'm like pinkie I have two younger siblings, a boy and a girl. Would anyone mind if I started a petition that asked MLP to be reclassified as a "family show" instead of a "girls show"?

Thinking about it I see it as this. Mr and Mrs Cake are one of the few couples to show that happily ever after we are told so many stories end with. A tale filled with love and occasional strife. But it does all work because the couple loves each other so.

I find it so odd that there was an infidelity joke between a couple that were LITERALLY made for each other.

2:50 The ironic part is that Cup Cake is canonically the one who changed her name. Her original name was Chiffon Swirl. So that means that Carrot Cake must be the one to originally be named Cake first.

I am glad that someone finally highlighted The Cakes. They really are some of my favorite characters for all of the reasons you highlighted. As I get older, I tend to like characters who are married and have families, but still go on adventures. It shows that marriage is just one landmark in living a long, happy life. I hope that more shows will focus on this in the future.

I'd LOVE to see an episode that shows us how The Cakes met! Maybe they were high school sweethearts!

Pretty good Silver Quill. season 5 will give some more screen time to background characters but i also want them to incorporate characters like the Cakes into the picture. I also love the fact that they have kids. I'm also betting Cadence and Shinning Armor might have one and once that time comes, there's going to be a lot of D'awwwwww!

I'd say the reason so many shows or movies (and like you said Silver, mainly comedies) depict marriage in such a way, is probably due to the high-rise in divorces and failed marriages in the 90s, after the family centered 80's, where so many people began to get divorced because there was no longer the social/religius pressure to stay in a marriage that was failing or making the couple unhappy. Obviously, this would be followed by the idea that marriage then becomes the "end of the line" for "bachelor freedom", because people either had bad experiences or witnessed them, and didn't want others to hasten into a marriage that could probably end in divorce. And I think that for the past few years, things have been taking an uphill turn, at least in the west, but people aren't as worried of getting married anymore, as the social pressure has dwindled SIGNIFICANTLY. Happy Valentine's Day/Singles' Awareness Day/just another Saturday. I know I'll be doing the same-old that I do every other day of the week: nothing that affects the outside world.

You continue to shine as one of the most objective analysts I've ever come to discover. You are very right in how The Cakes are a strong representation of what being a married couple along with parenting is all about. Two people living and sharing their lives while aspiring to be the best they can with what life gives them. There are good days and bad days. Triumph and tragedy. But in the end you are there for your spouse and your spouse is there for you. Baby Cakes reminded me a lot of what it was like when we had our first child. You are trying to do everything as "Perfect" as possible until you realize there is no such thing as perfection in parenting. Thanks for bringing to light something in which truly is important to think on whether it is Valentine's Day or not.

after watching this a couple of times, I would have to say that it is one of your best videos. It is concise, a little funny, and has just enough silver-isms to be unique but not overpowering.

There are rumors apparently that some of the Mane 6 might be getting long term special someponies in season 5. Weather this is just a rumor or not is yet to be determined, but if it is true, and Pinkie is one of the ones who finds her special some pony, I'd like to think that The a Cakes would be among those who might advise her on the relationship. You know what else I'd enjoy? A sitcom style episode, in which the entire thing takes place in Pinkie's apartment above Sugarcube Corner, and The Cakes could feature prominently in that episode. It could be an episode about being responsible, and Ms. Cake politely reminds Pinkie she's behind on paying her rent. Of course everything works out in the end. Although it would be mighty interesting if another pony besides Twilight moved (well I guess Twi didn't have a choice really).

There seems to be few people who can pull off both funny and touching on this earth, and you sir are one of those few people. LOVED this video!

I love the video and agree with all that you said. However I'm a bit bothered with how you refer to Shining and Cadence. I don't mind if anyone doesn't like them, however you made them seem almost like a bad couple, while their problem is with presentation. I could bet that we've seen less of them in the entire show than the cakes, and for certain in less situations. And true, royalty is harder to relate to, but what if consider them having just very high jobs. I really want there to be an episode that goes into what's going on in their background, showing them outside of the parades, as a young married couple that have very important and responsible jobs, not just the facade of parades and fights against evil. If we've seen only this from the main 6 AJ would be just a cowgirl stereotype, Rarity would be a southern belle stereotype, and Fluttershy would Howard Hooves.

Great Video Silver Quill, arguably one of your best

This is why I love My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic so much. To me it's the only quality cartoon show right now. I grew up in the 90s so I grew up with a lot of quality cartoons like Ducktales Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers Darkwing Duck and others so I really wanted to see a modern day quality cartoon that as good as the ones I used to watch as a kid. And My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic is as good as the cartoons I used to watch as a kid. It doesn't help that the creator of the show Laruen Faust worked at Hanna Barbara which is one of my favorite animation studios of my childhood. At first I thought it was a girl show because it's has Ponies and they're for girls but I jumped to conclusions. Now I really like the cartoon it's like a cartoon from the 90s that I missed.

The Cakes really are a sweet couple but I never knew Ms.Cake was pregnant, just a bit chubby. When the Baby Cakes episode was announced I was like "wait...HUH?!" It's a little weird they never mentioned it and just had her randomly give birth to the twins in season 2, were they not allowed to actually say the P word?

I sincerely thank you for turning me on to Slice of Life. It has easily become my favorite fan created work.

pff I'm a girl and I don't really care that much about getting married. I already have a lover, and I'm happy with how things are between us RIGHT NOW and we aren't married. Also, marriage actually does have more benefits than downfalls as long as you truly love the one you're married to.. Also creating giant love sparks is better than creating babies. I wonder what it was like when Pinkie showed up in Ponyville for the first time. I picture her strolling through, saying hi to everypony, when she gets a wiff of some delicious cakes and goes straight to the source. The Cakes are preparing for the day as usual when a hyper pink filly comes zooming in looking very hungry, they of course give her some sweets and that's about where my brain can't think of what they'd say so it's up to your imagination! I enjoy every video you make, especially when you're taking a look at a show or character that doesn't get enough love. Happy Hearts and Hooves day everypony! P.S. Bravo sir! I myself completely glossed over these characters. Now that I look at them after this I realize the impact that they have had on the show and I see them in a totally new light. I used to just notice them as background filler, now I see them as a team working together in this life without all the fanfare. I very much enjoyed this video.

This video has aged in interesting ways in regards to shining Armor and Cadence. Since their premiere episode, very little of their appearances have been related to their roles as royalty and even the parts that do are still mostly related to their marriage. They feel more like monica and chandler now and its nice

Speaking of the cakes, Silver, ever read "A Sweet taste of cake?" It is, hands down, one of the BEST Cake ship fics out there. It goes through so many emotions and trials that it makes a forgone conclusion (They would get together and have the twins) a worthwhile and fantastic journey. Heck, it treats the wedding as a small event and focuses on their lives after wards as well. Also, there is a part where Carrot not only earns his man card, but becomes more manly than Shining Armor and Big Mac sombined
