Watching this movie was like listening to a song, but the beat never drops. The feeling was hollow

I loved your saying "if you can't connect with it then it's just, meh" because that is how i decide if a movie is for me or not. But After Yang, however, touched me really deeply. Apart from the technical elements, the cinematography, colour, sound design and acting... two key points that sealed the deal for me were: The reference of pop culture (Lily Chou Chou and Ozu Yasujiro) and the overal existential theme (what is it to be human, what is it to be Asian). However i do agree that the movie somewhat keeps you from a distance, but its not a downside forbme at all. It creates this feeling like youre replaying a memory of a long lost time, which you can't fully recover but the core emotions remains.

I couldn't agree more. I was just searching for a deeper connection to this story and characters. 6/10 for me.

glad you reviewed this, i’m curious how you felt about the lily chou chou reference in the movie. i am on the loved-it side of the reviews, and overall bias aside i felt the inclusion was an additive internal intimacy to the story. love your content!

Colin Farrell is at his absolute best right now. He's brilliant in a TV show called The North Water (with Jack o Connell and Stephen Graham) from last year. Cant wait to see him in The Batman too

This should have been a NeoNoir film.....This should have been about the lives of people Yang outlived, and the memories he kept deep down, despite all the wiping. It went a little too on the nose woke about the father's distrust of clones, without explanation of his reasoning. A lot of the memory playback, should have been family members retelling the tales of Yang. The father was supposed to be absent-minded, but the mother although absent thru work, was played terribly cold

I couldn't agree more, it is a very beautifully shot movie, the score is amazing...but there alot I didn't really understand like..I didn't believe the couple, don't understand where it's set amongst a whole lot of other things...but Ultimately it just never hooked me...its hard to explain why...cause I love the idea of the movie...just don't know how to explain WHY it just didn't fully work for me ....

I've been fooled too many times by A24 and I won't be fooled again with this film.

the exploration of humanity and sentience in a.i has been done hundreds of times before in multiple mediums that this movie brought nothing new to the table. the transcript between the LaMDA bot and the google engineer is more thought provoking and that's just words on a page. personally, i'd be more interested in watching a movie about asian americans who sporadically sprinkle blaccent into their speech in lieu of actual cred, as that's an area of anthropology that hasn't yet been fully elucidated on celluloid.

I loved it, because it felt like human experience of something not strictly 'human' just gently washing over me. It felt really intimate

Anything that's a A24 distributor is a plus for me. With that being said, I'll take a gander at it.

Maybe the emotional remove was the point. Maybe it’s yangs story not the dads.

Well, actually, did not they try to insinuate that Yang was some kind of pervert or spycam on the family??? heh

I need this to be good, but definitely not in an i,Robot -- it's an uprising and everyone dies at the end -- way

The synopsis of the film doesn’t at all line up with what was depicted. Everyone but the robot and the daughter were rendered in complete 1D. I also can’t understand for the life of me why their Chinese accents were so miserable throughout -so avoidable lol.

I was convinced Farrel and his wife were bots. The certainly acted like bots. No doubt I will eventually rewatch this and will be a good forty minutes in before I realise I watched it before. I found it that forgettable.

Same. Did nothing for me. Felt no emotion. Beautiful to watch. Great intro. But ultimately fell very flat.

I don't get why you raved about the soundtrack. I thought it was as bland as the film.
