The guy at the front Ludwig is a german and theres a video where Al first picks him and asks his name. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs-nYLyQy5yad2Q.html Yeah he was talking about Bush when he mentioned the Axel of Elvis. The Jocks are Scottish, there were a number of wars between the english and scotish prior to the Act of Union in 1702. Pasties are savoury pastries in britain usually with beef and potato filling etc. The wombles are a very old childrens tv show, one of the characters was Moldavia if i remember correctly. The 118dia joke about India is about all the call centres based in India. 118 118 is a company you can ring here in the UK to look up someones number, they had a massive marketing campaign with tv adverts around the time this show was on. The jordies are people from Newcastle where traditionally call centers used to be based. The peru bear joke is a Paddington Bear reference. As for England vs Britain vs UK - UK is the country as a whole, Great Britain (often shortened to just Britain) is the main island that contains England, Wales and Scotland, so they are all different but you can for the most part use Britain and UK interchangeably, so long as you're not talking to someone from Northern Ireland....

I have to salute you for sticking with this. It's one of Al Murray's most British/European-centric routines and obviously it's going to be difficult for an American to keep up with (so many "in-jokes" that you can only really get if you are British/European). No disrespect intended at all, and as I said, I salute you for giving it air time. 😉

Peru: the way they treat their bears... that’s about the character “Paddington”. It’s a British character but there have been a couple of major feature films made recently. Regarding India, or “118dia” as he calls it: 118 is one of the most famous British directory enquiries phone services and India has become famous for the location of outsourced call centres to save money... also why he jokes that “the Geordies wanted too much money” (Geordies being people from the North East of England around the city of Newcastle).

118 is a call centre number from the UK that puts you through to India. Before that the call centres were in NE England where people are known as Geordies. That's why it is 118dia. Wizzard was 70s band that had a hit with "I wish it could be Christmas every day" which gets played incessantly each year. Peru is where a popular children's character, Paddington Bear, who was sent to England in a story, came from. Two movies now been made. Paddington 1 and 2.

As children, we are seeking our identity based off our environment and those around us. We wish to belong. If you identify with these things when young, they become a part of 'self'. Catch them early enough and these ideas may be the core in which they build 'self' upon. If you expose children to alternative world views, then they can question, then they can form independent thought. Children in America are taught lines of rhetoric from an early age. Rhetoric is a form of controlling thought by replacing independent thinking. An answer is provided in an easy to remember one line sentence. An answer to a question the child has not yet asked. It is absorbed into 'self', and spread to others when used. Then it is strengthened by group psychology/social convention/ideology, by those around us - Just like how the power of a religion is directly proportional to the amount of it's believers. They are taught the lines "Greatest Nation on Earth" and "Fighting for our Freedom". Yet when these are thought about; by no measure other than GDP is America greatest. Only when negative traits are considered does America become greatest at many things. What freedom are they fighting for? Are they currently under attack by another country? has another country overthrown America and they need to fight their oppressors? Or does their freedom come in the form of Oil and Opiates? Ask any American and they will tell you that they have the most freedom on Earth. Yet they have designated freedom of speech zones. They have restrictions in all aspects of life. Their media is controlled, with little freedom of press. Look up the global freedom Index and America is surprisingly lagging behind many other nations in all recorded metrics of freedom. How many poor/working class Americans oppose free health care? *This is why American children are not taught about the rest of the world. It is why they are taught all of these lines of rhetoric at an early age. To encourage and grow nationalism. To keep their populous ignorant. This serves the state to a great degree, but it does not serve the individual.* In a world filled with sleepers, America snores the loudest!

118 is a directory service that usually outsources to India. Usually in the UK all the call centres are in Newcastle (Geordies) and Paddington is a TV show where a bear is sent to England with nothing but a note and a taste for marmalade, it's a well lived and known kids show from back in the day

17:40 - All directory enquiries numbers ( 6 digits ) started with 118 when the original Directory Enquiries was discontinued. Prior to this, some of the original call centres were situated in Tyneside area (Geordie accents ) Obviously labour in India was much lower so they moved the call centres over there. ( Hence why Al calls it 118dia )

What makes him so good also is that so many people don't know that The Pub Landlord is a character. Not only is he funny and clever, he acts so convincingly. "Time Gentlemen Please" was one of my favourite shows from the early 2000's, so many great on-running jokes from one episode to the next. He's currently putting them all up on KZfaq, free to watch.

Josh, your so chill in the sense of the Americans being "completely surprise by an attack, 2 years into a global wars" I have seen other Americans comments on Al Murrays videos that don't understand that Al Murray is playing a character, his jokes are supposed to be light hearted and not taken seriously.... Alot of his jokes, you need to be British to understand. I will try and list the things that you might not have understood A Geordie - Someone from the town of Newcastle. 118dia, the UK has a lot of call centres in India. The Peru jokes - We have a kids character here called paddington the bear that was from Peru 1982 Falklands War - War between Britain and Argentina, the Falklands islands are close to Argentina and they claim them to be there's and they invaded them. The guy on the crowd "Andrew", earlier in the show he mocked him for apparently being camp so thats why he said about the hobbits. I think thats all of them.

Saing "Britain" or UK is fine - giving us all the blanket term "England" is not okay. 118dia for India refers to call centres which used to be handled in the northeast of England by "Geordies" or residents of Newcastle (look up THAT accent if you think Welsh is hard to understand)

Tsunami Tube You need to check out the Good Friday Agreementand other outcomes of the Peace Process, which is still not completed and has been dealt a blow by the ignorant and incompetent Brexit initiative. I want no return to the exacerbated conflicts and open warfare that pre WW1 “Ulster Volunteer” gun-running and the perfidy of Westminster in the 19th & early 20th century spawned for those who lived in NI’s Six Counties, and for all who suffered in the form of economic depression that hit all of the island of Ireland until the EU & North America in the 1990s helped the Brits get their heads round what they’d been doing, and allowed those born and/or resident on the island of Ireland to listen and talk to each other. Westminster divide-and-rule imperialism should have died in the 20th century.

I’m British we had an earthquake a few months ago but it was so light I thought a truck drove past my house! A few years ago we had another one but we lived in a top story flat so it woke me up. We get hurricanes here to but everything we get where I live SE is always so mild it’s nothing worst thing that happened was the 87 hurricane and a storm front flooded a whole island in the 60s. Places further north get snow in the winter and places like Cornwall seem to get more extreme weather coming in from the Atlantic... but when it’s not rona time Cornwall is such a great place to go fishing in mevagissey the pirate boat in Charlestown, old pubs with smugglers holes, surfing and the clotted cream ice cream and handmade fudge and the long drives through country roads and hilltops and beaches where you can see the fish swimming because the pollution is not as bad as it is here by London! And a Cornish Goddamn pasty from that place where you can buy it cooked to eat there or raw and put it in the oven. Man I need to buy a VW camper and take my kid during the holidays!
