There are two big reasons why resigning is good for a political career (in the UK at least): 1. It makes you a lot of friends inside the party, because they all remember you as the person who took the bullet and stopped the scandal from drowning them too; and 2. more importantly, ironically the public see you as more honest and competent as a result. They already see all politicians as dishonest and incompetent by default, so if somebody resigns it's like "oh, I guess maybe they must be honest enough and hold themselves to a higher standard than all the other politicians, who are happy to behave the same way but don't feel the need to resign over it."
