The 2022 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 15-30 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads the field, which includes stars such as 2020 Champion Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. What a shame this ended! In an alternative universe, you can add an hour to each players' clock and ask them to keep playing.
@gredangeo
@gredangeo 2 жыл бұрын
That's what time control is, but these two didn't make enough moves fast enough. Shouldn't be able to agree to a draw before move 40. If you spent too much time and scramble to make moves near the end. That's your own fault.
@pineapplesareyummy6352
@pineapplesareyummy6352 2 жыл бұрын
@@gredangeo I think the position really was just too complex for either of them to play quickly and accurately. This was an instant where the position is so rich it deserves to have been explored much more than time permits. But I agree that draw shouldn't be an option before a certain number of moves.
@spindoctor6385
@spindoctor6385 2 жыл бұрын
@@gredangeo That is an impossible thing to prevent. If players both want a draw, it is a draw. If you try to impose a rule about not agreeing to a draw before move 40, players can simply repeat moves or both move knights in cirlcles for however many moves it takes to reach move 40. I would prefer to see 3 points offered for a win so the potential gain outweighs the risk of losing. I have always believed that 1 win and 1 loss from 2 games is better than 2 draws from 2 games anyway.
@eragon78
@eragon78 2 жыл бұрын
@@spindoctor6385 Its not that simple. You cant always just repeat moves in a complected position or you might get mated. In a position like this, there really isnt any "waiting" move you can make. Trying to make a waiting move just makes you objectively worse. You can only really make those repeat waiting moves in closed positions where there are a lot less threats to watch out for, or in drawn endgames where you can just move a piece back and forth sometimes. If the players were not allowed to offer a draw in this position, then they definitely WOULD NOT have just "repeated moves" because you cannot do that in this position, its far too sharp.
@spindoctor6385
@spindoctor6385 2 жыл бұрын
@@eragon78 I think it is that simple. I think you are ignoring the fact that both players wanted a draw. While you can make an official rule that they can not agree to a draw, you can not stop it. If one player says do you want a draw, (they could do it with a wink or hand signal if you are going to ban them from verbally offering it) the other agrees and then they repeat moves. No player is going to agree to a draw and then take advantage of the other making a sub optimal move during their attempt to make it to the arbitrary number of moves before a draw is allowed.

Nowadays we only speak about advantage / disavantage with an engine point of view but those kind of positions are so complicated and tricky that we should not consider Mamedyarov was "winning" during the game A simple miscalculation or unseen tactic and the game can completely swing

So what did Dubov accomplish with this? He’s once again made everyone question everything they know about chess, as well as became a co-creator of a game so complicated and beautiful that 2 super-GMs couldn’t bear to ruin it with poor play in time trouble.

Another perfect example of where a slight change to the scoring system would be likely to gey a result. 3 points for a win should be standard in round robin events. What player, in either black or whites position would not risk half a point to possibly gain 3?

What a fight, they probably agreed to a draw because of headache for both of them😅. My impression is that allowing black to create the passed, protected pawn in c3 is not a good idea. Sometimes people say that draws are boring, this is an example of a thrilling, exciting game ended in a draw.
