The 1970 Interzonal was held in Palma de Mallorca from November 9-December 12, and was the last Interzonal held as a one-section round robin. With the tournament swelling to 24 players and further expansion on the way, future changes were inevitable. The following players vied for six slots in the candidates matches to be held in 1971: William G Addison, Miroslav Filip, Robert James Fischer, Efim Geller, Svetozar Gligoric, Vlastimil Hort, Robert Huebner, Borislav Ivkov, Eleazar Jimenez Zerquera, Bent Larsen, Milan Matulovic, Henrique Mecking, Dragoljub Minic, Renato Naranja, Oscar Panno, Lev Polugaevsky, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Jorge Alberto Rubinetti, Vasily Smyslov, Duncan Suttles, Mark Taimanov, Wolfgang Uhlmann, Tudev Ujtumen..
Ujtumen from Mongolia, about as outside as an outsider could get, actually held the lead by himself after round 3. However, reality and Robert J. Fischer set in, as the American quickly soared to a dominating position. The other contenders didn't worry about it too much; after all, you only had to finish in the top six to qualify for the Candidates, and there was even a seventh spot open for a reserve. So they played it safe, while Fischer kept working hard.
At the quarter pole following round 6, Fischer had 5.5 points and a 1.5 point lead on Geller, Gligoric, Larson, Panno, and Ujtumen. But then came a bad stretch: he managed to draw lost positions in round 7 and 8, but Larsen didn't let him off the hook in round 9. By now the lead had vanished, as Geller joined Fischer at the top with 6.5.
That led to the critical round 12 encounter between the leaders, Geller holding a half-point lead and playing the White pieces. Any normal grandmaster, when Geller offered an early draw, would have accepted to get an easy half-point closer to qualification. Fischer, hungry for a win after five rounds without one, refused.
Geller played inaccurately and lost a pawn, reaching a difficult rook ending. Eventually, a hallucination and a final mistake sealed his fate, and Fischer took the lead. The rest was a matter of technique: Fischer won two more in a row, took a couple of draws for a breather, then started his famous streak with full points in his last seven games.

Hello agad and everyone... It’s always great to watch your videos. I'm Mongolian and you pronounce the name perfectly fine like a native speaker. It’s "Түдэвийн Үйтүмэн" in mongolian language. I'm just a 3-month old chess fan, not a player but I'm addicted your channel somehow and I didn't even know our country had someone who faced Fischer haha. It’s really surprising … thanks again for all your videos.

I really respect that explanation of en passant for the super beginners. I’ve been playing since I was maybe 8 or 9 so the idea of explaining it in a high level game made me chuckle a bit, but your powers of explanation are why I always watch you. For all I know I’m sure some class A player would chuckle at my not understanding what looks to me like a random move, so it reminds me to stay humble.

@TheStephCurry
@TheStephCurry 6 жыл бұрын
Schwindsichtiga der Echte it means while passing
@schwindsichtigaderechte5293
@schwindsichtigaderechte5293 6 жыл бұрын
That's a matter of opinion in the translation. While you are probably correct that word for word "while passing" is more accurate, in my opinion the meaning of the phrase is better conveyed by "in passing". Translating the word "en" is not really possible, as you also use it in phrases like "de temps en temps" or "en anglais", where "en" clearly doesn't translate to "while".
@WannesMalfait
@WannesMalfait 6 жыл бұрын
Schwindsichtiga der Echte Yes. However in this context the most accurate translation would be while passing.
@schwindsichtigaderechte5293

Again, that's a matter of opinion.
@javierdario5745
@javierdario5745 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would say that both translations carry the exact same meaning. Maybe "in passing" looks more like the French phrase but yeah, whether you care about it or you don't is indeed a matter of opinion.

Nice endgame lessons. Always helpful. On that note, at 10:35 White plays Nc1 to defend his a-pawn. I see GM’s do this a lot, instead of a move like a3 (counterattacking black knight), they instead leave the pawn structure intact and protect the pawn with a piece (as in this Nc1 move). However, in order to win you need to promote a pawn, so why not play a3 and gain that time by kicking the black knight? Is it more important to keep that mini pawn chain a2-b3 intact? I mean, you gotta promote so they need to go forward. Why not push the pawn with tempo?

Dear Agad, I am facing a problem which I cannot find a way to improve my chess. I almost watch every single of your videos, stop the video and thought. Also making exercises like mate in two , Zugzwang, windmills but I still make easy blunders in a game miss a mate, never made a queen sacrifice or rook sacrifice whole my life. Do you mind if you share a video about intermediate players. I already know typical openings but middle game and end game and thinking strategy is the biggest problem of mine. Can you, please explain me how I manage to become at least a semi strong player with my own style. I want to have a style.

Go on li chess 4 hrs a day, play classical and take at least 30 secconds per move. Once per week play rapid at your local chess club if available for at least 4 hrs taking a minute per move. Go to every classical/rapid tournaments you can. Anyone doing this with the serious intent to get better should pass 1800 within a year. In particular practice the end game in drills, as 80% of games end there. That's just off the top of my head but I hope it helps.

I would like to mention you that you can make a basic video for all the rules and the things that you mention over basic principles of chess. You need not have to repeat again and just put the link in description if anyone want to know what en-pasant means. This disturbs in between some serious game play.
