The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

I could not have known back in 1972 that 46 years later someone would be analyzing these games for me in such a clear and enjoyable manner. Then, I was just a teenager new to chess (thanks to Bobby) and struggling to make sense of these games. Thanks for the nostalgic trip down memory lane.

you should really check out the movie 'pawn sacrifice.' its a biopic of fischer but the focus is on the matches vs Spassky with game 6 the climax. Liev Schrieber is wonderful as spassky as is toby maguire as fischer.

I agree with Fischer,this isnt like him,he was probably surprised that Spasky went all out on him..It was actually very well played by Spasky..Rf3,h4,those moves require hard calculative abilities.I wish games from the present were like these.I guess we still have Aronian,Chucky and Rapport to entertain us

Saw video on KZfaq of the first game and indeed Fischer had a chair that swiveled and Spassky did not. And Bobby was doing a lot of swiveling! I believe it’s in Spanish and they show Fischer losing his famous bishop. Very cool to see what you describe. Top notch analysts!

I am a total beginner and just got into chess later in life. These videos are making me to want to play more and more. The only issue is that it takes me over an hour to watch a 20 minute video. Wow, it's an Agad Oktoberfest. . . you keep posting and I'll keep clickin' the like button 👍 Often, English is a nightmare. In this case, the past tense of cost is just cost, no need to add the ed. So it would be, the chair cost a lot of moolah :) The word costed is used when estimating, as in a statement like: Those options have yet to be costed into the proposal.

Bobby is the greatest chess player who has ever graced chess. I don't really know about Paul Morphy (Magnus not higher than Morphy) but Bobby had a shot career. Bobby played from 6 to 29 can you imagine Bobby after so many variations under his belt a beast.

As of minute 21:24, I have now gained Supreme Vast Knowledge. This will definitely give me an edge in future chess games against opponents who only have Vast Knowledge. And of course, this was a most excellent video, with good background on the series and this game in particular. Fisher missed a checkmate sequence near the end. So he was human after all.

Sugestion!!!! Please post the game between those 2 grandmasters (this year at olympiad) when one of them remained with a bishop and a knight versus a lonely king and had to remember the correct way of checkmating.It is a small labirint and he was frustrated as he knew he must not mistake one move.

Some mistakes are ok as you have 50 moves and it can be done in about 35 or less depending on the position. Learn the ideas and practice it vs computer with 5 minutes on your clock.

Spassky had sacrificed his bishop earlier. In this variation, Spassky would have captured Fischer's bishop in return, 'winning back' the piece. So he doesn't get his own bishop back, but he does win Fischer's bishop.

I almost always get the tactics (like Ne3) correct, but I never can get myself into the right positions through the opening. I guess I need to study opening theory much more.

To be honest.. These kind of matches are much better and with deeper meaning than the ones played now.. Bobby Fisher was right. Chess nowdays is boring because of the theoretical tactics. Now there is still theory till move 20.. Thats not chess. That is just study about chess.. Thats why you always see draws nowdays instead of the past..

Sounds like Spassky really loved the game- moreso than HIS performance. He saw the game very objectively, like a scientist testing a hypothesis. Man, what a good sport and a cool guy. To applaud your opponent's brilliance while playing and losing on the game YOU are known for just shows you his absolute love and fascination for the game.

I am pretty sure it is the best Stockfish version available on the Premium service on chess.com. At least it looks like it, sounds like it, and feels like it... :) I'm not 100% sure though... It'd be nice if someone confirmed ^^'

at 5:53, why does Knight on b5 to c7 not work instead of checking black with queen to b4? It's a rook/queen fork? or am I missing something?

At the time -18:39 why can't white move the knight c7? Maybe it is a good move. Forking the black rook and black queen. What do you think? Just asking.
