The 2020 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 11-26 January. World Champion Magnus Carlsen again heads the field, which includes Top 10 stars Caruana, Giri and So as well as 5-time World Champion Anand. A lot of the focus will be on young stars - Duda, Artemiev, Xiong and above all 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja, who makes his super-tournament debut. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, one round will be played in the PSV football stadium in Eindhoven (16 January).
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. @sdev8317
@sdev8317 4 жыл бұрын
i noticed that as well in this tournament. i guess knights are hard to counter since their movement is harder to calculate far ahead. maybe thats what helps aggressive tacticians to win where a strong engine would probably favor 2 bishops instead. ive watched a lot of alirezas streams on twitch, havent noticed him preferring knights over bishops. but those are 3m games mostly. still it makes me think its a bit of a coincidence that he ends up with 2 knights a lot this tournament, but he sure makes it work! im hoping he wins the tournament, he is an exciting talent and great for the game !

@@kavyanshagrawal5279 i agree, but i dont think it applies to alireza's games in this tournament. he usually plays for open games in my opinion, and in these games he exchanged bishops for knights when the games were not closed off

"P" in many Iranin words changed to "F" because as I siad, there were no "P" in their alphabet. @@arsalan51 thanks! thats fascinating.. i was wondering, since Farsi falls in the indo-european language tree, if Firouzja had a shared origin with the 'european' root word for Man or Manly. that word is 'Vir' in latin. meaning man as well as manly VIRtues, one of which is being brave and 'victorious'. it all checks out, this has to be a common linguistic origin.

The zwischenzug is a chess tactic in which a player, instead of playing the expected move, first interposes another move posing an immediate threat that the opponent must answer, and only then plays the expected move.
