My dad was navigator/radioman on B29s that bombed the hell out of Japan. The round trip from Saipan to Japan and back took over 16 hours. The B29s were overloaded with bombs beyond weight carrying spec. In addition, the planes were stripped of defensive weapons and oil and gas were cut to the minimums so they could carry more bombs. As a result, some planes never got gained flight - my dad remembered taking off in the dark and seeing several planes burning in the ocean below

That was like the most unrealistic water landing ever filmed. you don't increas power and dive into the water, unless you want to die. as you come close to the water you use ground effect to bleed off power and slow plane by increasing pitch until the wings run out of ground effect and you hit the water in control and at stall speed.

@thomaskolb8785
@thomaskolb8785 5 жыл бұрын
WALTERBROADDUS Well, not necessarily. A plane can easily stay afloat for hours and hours unless it is broken apart. We actually teach our student pilots in great detail how to perform water landings in case of an engine failure - against the wind, close and paralell to the shore, avoiding power lines, low speed, full flaps, wings level and wheels locked. If done right, it will be a smooth landing and the plane will neither sink or cartwheel but gently break the surface and stop, only partially submerged. I have once even helped salvaging a small single prop plane that did just that. It had been floating for nearly three hours and besides serious water damage, there was no major physical trauma to the fuselage. Pilot and passenger could swim/wade to the shore unharmed.

The majority of people watching this are not going to be pilots, and could care less. They want drama. If they made all war movies accurate, most people would die of boredom before getting to the actual combat scenes.

@@JoelBrothers watch "Das Boot" everything is realistic(the story isn't as realisti). It potrays the boredom, the excitement, and the despair the crews of a U-boat went through, and still it keeps your attention through the whole 3 hours of screen time. You can be as realistic as you want you just gotta now which parts should be on screen and which ones should be off screen. Don't play around with realism cause you want drama, makes it less fun to watch.

Most of the people commenting here have never been in a little puddle jumper plane in the middle of the ocean at dusk. I fly around the Caribbean a lot. Trust me, even with modern navigational aids, we've been lost a time or two. You can't fully grasp how BIG the ocean is until you're over it at 10,000 feet in a little, delicate airplane.

Another time extra fuel helped them going forward and capture a vantage point.

Hats off to the old wisdom of compass using considering GPS is only run by 8 years life span of 24 satellites while compass will run another 1 billion years without any hitch plus no battery needed which another plus over GPS! Now today even North Korea is capable of deploying small truck based GPS jammer small radar like stuff that can cancel all GPS signal within 100 miles /150km of diameter land area. After I got my open water cert for scuba diving, I was on a dive with some spear fisherman. They had nitrox in their tanks which meant I had surface 15 to 20 minutes before them. When it was time, I signaled my dive buddy, did my ascent and then followed his dive flag. Alone on the surface, looking out into the expanse of that wide open ocean, I thought about what it was like to be a downed F4F / F6F WW2 pilot in the middle of the ocean all alone. Scary thought...

The TBD Devastator was a terrible warplane even for the late pre-war period. Slow, sluggish and finicky. It was a liability regardless of whether it was dropping bombs or torpedoes (especially the awful early-war aerial torpedoes used by the US Navy). The USN would have been better off replacing all TBDs with the SBD Dauntless until sufficient numbers of TBF Avengers could be produced.
@julosx

That's exactly what the US Navy did after all the TBDs were shot down during the Coral Sea battle -_- No one ever saw a Devastator after 1942 it seems.
@jeffyoung60
@jeffyoung60 7 жыл бұрын
The Devastator torpedo bomber was state-of-the-art in 1936. The U.S. Navy would discover the hard way in June 1942 that it was obsolete. But here in January 1942 it was still an effective and efficient, medium-range patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, its three-man crew giving it a distinct advantage. Here it is carrying 500-lb bomb for opportunistic use on Japanese surfaced submarines or surface ships. It could carry a 1,000-lb bomb, far more effective, but it would slow down the aircraft considerably and use up more fuel. The general-purpose 500-lb bomb was more suitable. But I don't see any auxiliary fuel tanks on the Devastator, which would have saved the crew from having to ditch. The movie however, doesn't explain how they got lost. With a three-man crew this should have been less likely.
@julosx
@julosx 6 жыл бұрын
Remember the Pacific as an ocean is freaking big and it's far from easy to maintain a good navigation with such a primitive equipment. Sometimes a cloud was enough to have a whole crew losing sight of each other and ending up ditching. Pilots who fought there couldn't believe what they heard when pilots of the European front told them the sky was black with aircrafts there.

I would say it wasn't state of the art given that just six months later they got chewed up real good at Midway. They are listed as effective through March 1942, but they had yet to come across a real Japanese response up to Midway. During the Coral Sea battle they helped sink one carrier, failed on another, and I honestly think it was already obsolete before the war started. Even though it could heft a sizable load aloft it was very slow and under armored, and once the Japanese got into them it was over. Now, I realize part of that at Midway was the Jap's fighter cover was drawn down and as such the Devastators felt the full force of that umbrella, but I would hazard to say that given a similar situation the SBD would have been a bit more survivable, and was designed around the same time period as the TBD, 1935. With that, state of the art for 1942 to me is the B-26, the TBF series, the Jug.....these were all state of the art planes available by the Battle of Midway.

I am going to do some research into navigation during the time of this story. I am intrigued by the optical device pictured. However, as to the radio direction finder and loop antenna. It is well known that the loop antenna is directional in the 90 degree angle from where the loop is pointing. In other words, when the radio signal is peaked, or the signal is strongest, the direction from or to the transmitter is in the center of the loop, not at the ends. I am an instrument rated private pilot. The E6B computer, the flat thing on the pilot's lap, is shown with what is called the "wind" or "wind vector" calculator. Pilot's use this to compute visually where the wind is really coming from, and what ground speed the aircraft is flying.

My father was navigator/bombardier on B-29's, two tours. Some of their missions they would hear a pair of P-51 pilots talking. One of them had flown too long at combat settings and no longer had the fuel to get back. He would ditch, and his buddy would circle, transmitting in the hope that their position would be recorded, and then, out of fuel he would ditch beside his buddy. Some of the missions he flew were search and rescue, with rafts in the bomb bay. Never once did they locate any of the crews they set out to find.

Too bad you weren't there they wouldn't have gotten lost. You forgot situational awareness, which is almost impossible with no landmarks. You also forgot wind drift magnetic north variations to map geometry, as well as instrument error, as well as no fail safe to tell you where you are, oh and limited fuel as well as having a bomb strapped to you but I bet they are listening to how easy you make it seem.

It's been mentioned by others here: That's Lexington or Saratoga, not Enterprise at 0:20 and at 0:44. The ship at 0:25 is Ranger. The letters "R N G R" on her after flight deck are a giveaway for those who don't recognize her by her shape. See the USN photo gallery at www.navsource.org/archives/02/04.htm

How does one ditch an airplane? Seems that would have a very LOW success rate being that hitting water at 150 MPH would be like hitting solid stuff--I remember watching a 007 James Bond movie where the bad guys kidnapped a British Vulcan bomber and landed it of the coast of Bermuda or Cayman someplace--kinda stretches crediblity...Just sayin'

@@justsayin3228 how so? By dropping altitude like the pilot did, you greatly reduce the horizontal distance you can travel, plus you have that much less time to prepare for exiting the aircraft.

My father flew navigator/bombardier in B-29's, and one of my english teachers in high school few in Fairey Battles (Englishman) The Battles were similar to the TBD's in being obsolete and under-powered and still committed to combat, resulting in terrible losses (the bridges over the Meuse river during the German's invasion of France in 1940, during their breakout after going through the "impassable" Ardennes forests and hills.)
