This happened to my friend and his mom once. His mom wanted to celebrate having got the yacht in her divorce. My friend jumped in to the water, and his mom saw and see wanted to join him. She didn't realize that the back part of the ship where there was supposed to be a ladder; the ladder had actually been uninstalled. The good thing was that they weren't to far out, and they were able swim to shore. It took them about an hour or so to get there but they had life jackets and got there sunburnt, tired, but alive.

Having been in this situation before with my friends (how we forgot to put down the ladder is anyone's guess, I'm sure our alcohol intake was super high) when nobody could grab the top of the boat, we decided to create a raft of our bodies with our legs connected like scissors while we floated on our back, we had the lightest person climb on top of us and jump on the boat... It worked after a few tries and we all survived....

The unspoken rule of the sea is to always have at least one person on board if you go for a swim, regardless of ladders. The currents can take you or your boat away, you might not be fast enough to swim after it, and you will only have about a minute of giving it all until you get very tired. It's easy for me to say cause I grew up on the sea, but is just common sense. It's like going for a space walk outside of your space shuttle while having no cables connecting you to a shuttle and nobody inside the shuttle at the same time. It's just ridiculous, and I have a hard time believing that people would actually do something like that, but unfortunately it happens.

Had a mate who went fishing by himself in open ocean, hooked up a fish while trawling. It pulled the fishing rod from the holder so without thinking he jumped in after it, he then realised his boat was driving away from him and he was in the middle of nowhere at least a couple kilometres off shore. He survived because he realised the boat was moving in a large circle and managed to intercept the boat on its course, he said he was lucky because if he missed it he didn’t think he’d be able to keep swimming to intercept it again... he lost the fishing rod as well. hydrophobic? I looked up Hydrophobic/Hydrophobia it says “Hydrophobicity is a term derived from the Greek “hydro”, meaning water, and “phobos”, meaning fear. Hydrophobic substances are composed of non-polar molecules that repel bodies of water and attract other neutral molecules and non-polar solvents. Examples of these molecules are alkanes, oils and fats in general.” But I think you mean Thalassophobia, which is the fear of the ocean or any deep sorts of the water.

After the guy couldn't climb on the inflatable toy, they all could have grabbed onto each other in a ring around the floater. Then they'd be a fairly stable way for the lightest girl to climb up the anchor. Plus, all could hold their breath at the same time before she starts climbing. It'd make the human floatee even more buoyant, and let them stay together if they're pushed underwater. I jus hope if I'm in a crazy situation I'd have a good idea to fix it. Be that as it may, after about three weeks of trying to claw back up onto deck - with only the occasional sardine for sustenance and thirsty as heck (believe me, sea water can be pretty salty) - I started to have flashbacks to my time as a marine biologist tutoring a young Jacques Cousteau, and how back then I had developed a modified dolphin dialect that could be picked up in sub-aqua sonic wavelengths with a trans-oceanic reach. So, that very night, in the teeth of a sudden and furious tempest, I made a supreme effort to recall the Dolphinese equivalent for the SOS distress signal (to be honest, I was indeed beginning to feel somewhat distressed by then). Well, the appropriate phrase came back to me during a snatch of sleep, and resolving to transmit it without further delay, I dived down some 600 metres or thereabouts, the level at which most dolphin species go about their business, when what should happen but the flagship submarine of the Mongolian navy passed below within a few fathoms of me. Its periscope turned and peeped at me, but for some reason - crew perhaps thought I was just a night shift pearl diver, which I have been, by the way - the submarine just cruised on by. Frustrating it was, I can tell you. Running a tad short of breath, I tried out my rusty Dolphinese, struggled a little to strike the correct pitch, but eventually put out the call and swam back to the surface (dreadful case of the bends on the way up), where I waited for the critters to respond. And respond they did. Great Scott! A pod of at least two hundred of the blighters showed up; what's more, all of 'em the famed snorkel-snouted species, supposedly extinct! They circled me with timid curiosity at first, then overcoming our mutual modesty and shyness, we indulged in some nautical banter and sang sea shanties for a while, one of the young 'uns even making a salty comment on my fishy Dolphinese vowels: "Something dodgy about your ohs and ays", says he, if you please! By and by towards daybreak the tempest slackened off, enough at least to allow an attempt to get me back aboard my yacht. The wizened old patriarch of the tribe - born five hundred years ago, knew Moby Dick personally - he turned to me and said: "Krrrrrrk chptaataachoo, gzgzeefaa!" (Ahoy there, we'll see you out of this frightful pickle, don't you worry about that old chap, after all we are kindred souls of the salty swell, and I'll vouch by the code of the North Star there is no higher fellowship than that!) He bid me mount his back as one would a horse, which I duly did, then with a casual flick of his tailfin we were clear of the water and aloft over my yacht. Cries he out: "Pffabachoolaw kssskreenoo vlobbodzhinaaka dndndnshleeff yuhlamaanee orzollo!" (Jump!) I did as he advised, so landing slap on the poop deck, dripping wet I was, as well. After the dolphins and I had exchanged solemn farewells and sworn never to forget our briny encounter, they plunged as one into the unfathomable deep, leaving but a few stray bubbles as evidence of their existence. Quite overcome and in sentimental mood, I wandered over to the starboard of the poop deck, where lo! There I beheld the yacht's ladder, insolently draped into the water.

Yeah like, if the 3 men locked shoulders closed together with one wearing the life vest, then one woman could of stood on the shoulders of the man with the vest and could of reached for the bottom of the hand rail, 3 men peddling with one wearing a vest could of easily held up the girl, even if they were pushed under water by taking deep breaths the air in their lungs would prevent them from fully sinking.. Also when they did the clothes line, it's beyond me that the 200+ man was the one to go when those women easily weigh less than 150 lbs, one man could of worn the life best and boosted the woman going up so her whole weight wasn't on the clothes line.

im no expert, but slightly familar. I am pretty sure its pretty hard to adrift like this. I don't believe there are actual boats like this, there should have been laders in the back. I say this for several reasons. 1. I think they avoided showing the rear, because the boat probably has one in the back. 2. The size of boat matters on if there is a ladder, this boat doesn't seem large enough, even though they try to make shots to make it look much bigger. 3. If the boat was really large enough to not have a ladder or an automated one that would mean there would be on board staff, so some one would always be on board/deck. Edit: Forgot to mention. Also I believe there are regulations and requirements for boats, depending on size, in what type of safety and survival features. Even if we go around that and say this boat didn't have side ldders. The boss wouldn't have lent out his sailing boat to someone with zero experience. The guy would have had to have some sailing experience, or boating license. He would have known of what ever emergency options they had. If not, I believe the boss could get in to trouble for lending out his boat to inexperienced sailors.

Reading the ship's log, the last entry was: "Becalmed and hot. Everyone else is swimming. Me too". The last person aboard jumped in without lowering the ladder. All perished. There should be an access button to open the ladder from the bottom of the boat to prevent such a situation. In case a solo person falls off or in this case make it idiot proof. It's a simple design to avoid such a situation.

Lol, explain the engineering for that then. How is this magic button on the bottom of the boat going to dispatch the ladder from the deck

Actually terrifying scenario because of how realistic this is or how easily we can make similar fatal mistakes without realizing it

Exactly, most comments on how stupid the people were, but the lesson here is life threatening situations can happen when people are careless and drinking is a bad idea when dealing with unfamiliar surroundings.

This never happened to me, but when I was a kid and in a sailing boat with another kid, we lost the rudder, and just went straight out into the sea after having been told to stick near the harbor...scary experience lol...especially since we almost collided with larger vessels.

This movie may have scared the shit out of me when I was a kid, but I can honestly say that I check to make sure there is a ladder every single time I get into the water. So I guess this movie was really a learning lesson. 😆

The director must’ve watched the King of the Hill episode “Hank's on Board” and decided to make a movie based on that.

I blame the people who designed the yacht to not have a way for you to get back on board, because you could be fully aware of there being no ladder, yet somehow fall into the water for some reason anyway.
