Viewers will learn how AGCO formed from Deutz-Allis three decades ago and quickly acquired farm equipment brands like Hesston, White Farm Equipment, New Idea, Massey Ferguson, Valtra, Glencoe. New brands like AGCO-Allis and AGCO-Star were created.
Today AGCO has over 8 billion dollars in sales and offers key brands in North America including Massey Ferguson, Challenger, Fendt, Gleaner, White Corn Planters, Sunflower Tillage, Ro-Gator and Terra Gator.

I also grew up on Massey Ferguson tractors My dad started out in 1952 with a Allis and a Ford 9n. Then he switch to Massey Ferguson's the first two he bought was a MF35 and MF 65 then he had a 135, 165. a175, then a 255 , 265, 275 ,285 my favorite. Then he had a 461 and a 471. Today my older brother owns my dad's 471 and a brother in law owns my dad's old 255. Today I have a Massey Ferguson 3070 and a IMT 539 and a John Deere 5320 . The Massey 3070 is my favorite
@hedydd2
@hedydd2 2 жыл бұрын
@@donaldthomas5852 The IMT is very interesting. Is this model a three or four cylinder, based on the MF35 or 65 respectively? I remember my 1979 MF590 tractor’s Perkins engine having an inlet manifold [and probably many other parts] made by IMT. Later 600 series tractors had their UK-style automatic trailer hitches made by another licensee, Ursus of Poland. I’m almost certain that many components used in the 1970’s Coventry factory, on the last 100, the 200, 500 and 4200/4300 were actually made by these companies and their Pakistani and Indian licensees, Millat and TAFE respectively.

i love this video. im from Kansas and the Hesston AGCO plant is something we're proud of. My grandfather always had an affinity for Allis-Chalmers tractors and almost bought a brand new one as his first tractor in the 50s but was swayed by his dad to buy a used John Deere because it was a green farm (and still is under my cousin.) This history is so very neat.

I am in my 40s and like you I removed all those brands at dealers and on farms. I grew up 7 miles from my home town and there 7 dairy farms on the way to down. Almost every one was totally loyal to one brand. There was an all Ford farm, all J.I. Case farm, all Allis-Chalmers farm, all Massey farm, all IH farm. Two big grain farms were loyal as well. One was all John Deere and the other Oliver and Steiger. I sure wish I could go back in time and film at those farms. Today only the John Deere, Oliver farm now John Deere and Steiger and the IH farm are still going.

Now I understand why some brands haven’t merged because sales recognition. For AGCO to grow it need to build better dealerships that can train farmers in handling n understanding of their products. Some AGCO products have high cost to their spare parts compared to CNH. I do see GSI playing bigger part maybe other farm related products been brought by AGCO for total farm solution. AGCO’s relationship with TAFE is worth exploring, especially the relative financial strength of both companies. Also, in your summary of the video there are hay mowers shown which are a result of buying and re-branding Fella hay products of Germany. Later on they also buy the Lely grass machinery business as Lely exits to concentrate on robotic dairy cow management. Lely included the Welger round baler business which at last has brought some stability to AGCO’s implement businesses, at least in Europe. Let’s not forget Valtra either, bought partly to get back into the engine manufacturing business but also adding another exclusive line of tractors which are gaining market share steadily.

MY dad said that John Deere and International Harvester after WW2 took their war profits and used it to floorplan their dealerships... they built a great dealership network...My grandfather, dad and my uncles opened an BF Avery dealership in 1949 and with the acquisition of BFAvery by Minneapolis Moline became a MM dealer but they closed the dealership in mid to late 50,'s primarily because when they ordered a tractor they had to pay for it in 30 days. Whereas John Deere and IHC could hold a unit for 6 months before having to pay. So they could stock more units.. plus had time to make sales.. John Deere and IHC were building a loyal dedicated clientele of Customers... both with franchisees and end users
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 4 жыл бұрын
It seems MM struggled from the 50s to the 70s when the brand was phased out. Moline made some good machines. So did Oliver. You are 100% correct that the other brands similar did not have the string dealership network to grow theirs sales.

What is interesting is looking at just AGCO, in general the only info easily found is simply the aquisitions of the bigger companies mostly starting when the actual AGCo name came to be. But there were SO MANY little companies, a lot of them fairly specialized, that were consolidated either by AGCo, or were picked up by other companies right before AGCo bought them that the list of ALL the companies under the AGCo nameplate is simply immense. I remember in the late 80's reading about companies that produced only one or two items, sometimes just cultivators or spring tooth drags etc getting aquired by Hesston, or New Idea, or White, etc. Then AGCo came by and bought up those companies. It is really hard to find a good list nowdays, a google search of any of the "AGCo brands" doesn;t really show their history very well, mostly just links to stuff about AGCo itself. I suppose that's a product of our modern global economy and merged up megacorps. But it is a shame in a way that all that "little guy" history is so hard to find. Sort of like how AGCo doesn't seem to like talking about how they own the Oliver nameplate, or MM. Those old companies get treated as irrelevant in today's market, and that's really too bad. But as the saying goes, nothing stays the same.

AGCO was built on multiple brands but in 2006 they began to consolidate the brands. Same machinery but painted in “key” brand colors. AGCO has a cool history and great brands but by 2006 as the company was rapidly growing it changed course. AGCO’s primary competitors are John Deere and Case IH. The top 2 brands are one solid color and AGCO has progressed to be core brands to match the other big two.

@@bigtractorpower Ratlif retired, and everything changed. since then everyone around here left agco and went to IH, as when brands got consolidated(under massey) and parts discontinued, everyone left, and Gleaner was left, until red massey-gleaners started showing up online. We're the only ones who run Gleaners anymore in my area. They may have a good machine, but people got burnt by massey bad(from combines, to the 2000 series transmission issues), and many vowed to never go back to it. Perhaps they have a plan, but it sure isn't working or looking good up here. Also would have helped if they would have backed the brands they are named after: Allis Chalmers and Gleaner.

Great video ! Very informative. It's interesting to see how it all came together. The late 70's early 80's were tough on a lot of North American tractor companies. Talking about brand recognition, I see a tractor line called McCormick which to me is a old brand. My Dad had a 1968 McCormick International 434 tractor that we used on our dairy farm up until the 80's.

I'm a fan of AGCO and their brands, so I always enjoy these videos highlighting their history along with the "then versus now" comparison. There does seem to be a fair bit of disdain due to their phase-out of the Allis name and the orange paint, but their quality has continually improved and I feel they made a strategically smart decision by focusing on Massey Ferguson. MF seems to have a global presence that dwarfs the presence Allis-Chalmers ever had (globally; too many people get hung up on the North American market only), and they had so many brands under their belt that consolidation was badly needed. They have a smart portfolio in NA now with Massey (full line, consumer and prosumer brand), Challenger (commercial use brand), and Fendt (the "Cadillac"). You still see some co-branding, such as Hesston by Massey Ferguson, which works well, in my opinion. And in the last few years they have really been pushing the envelope with features and technology, which I sincerely hope will gain them some serious market share. Their only weakness in my eyes are the dealer network in NA; that is the biggest issue I see, and one where John Deere really dominates the market. Just my two cents; great video!

Great post. I am an Allis fan and miss orange but Allis helped build AGCO as a foundation and built a company 8 times bigger than AC was. Hart-Parr coined the term tractor in 1903 and had a loyal following. In 1929 Hart-Padd the original tractor became Oliver. I bet there were loyal Hart-Parr owners that thought what’s this Oliver. Oliver grew and grew and eventually became White Farm Equipment which then became part of AGCO. Unfortunately time changes things but AGCO has progressed and grown and has nearly 30 years of its own history now.

I found this very interesting I am a 86 year old going back to the horse, then my father buying a new ACWC in 1937 . At 4 years old I was sitting on the tool box where ever My father went. after 4 years in the Airforce during the Korean war, I came home to farm with my father, buying the last 2 clynd.JD 630. But the Lord had other things for me. so spent flying for and starting flight programs for a mission. But as the old saying goes," you can take the boy of the farm but can't take the farm out of the farm". This was the very best story of how many of these companies merged together, as i well remember most of these when they were first showing up on the farm market. **************for this presentation.
