Dr. Natalie Crawford, MD, board certified fertility physician, explains the impact of age on fertility. Age is the number one predictor of pregnancy success in women trying to get pregnant. Learn about your ovaries and how they function. What happens as you get older? Why is it harder to get pregnant as you age? She talks about ovarian reserve, including testing of Antimullerian hormone (AMH) and antral follicle count (AFC), and egg quality. Learn about optimizing your fertility and making the decisions that are right for you.

When I was 25 years old, and I accidentally got pregnant. I cried for many days because I was a student without a stable career yet. Now my daughter is 10 years old. She is healthy and beautiful. My life is much easier now. I can't image how difficult for working_full_time moms to have new born babies.

Dr. Crawford, thank you for this very informative video. I am 32 and today I was told by my Dr that my AMH is below average. This was very scary information and I left the doctors office feeling very concern, afraid and frankly broken. Although, he tried to explain what this meant for my fertility he definitely did not explain this like you. Watching this video made me feel hopeful and gave me a little peace of mind.

This was so informative and also encouraging! I had 2 kids in my 20s and got pregnant very quickly. Our 2nd child had a severe syndrome and it took 8 years to see if I was a carrier. I have felt robbed of those 8 years of fertility and now I am 36 and facing the AMA term 😬 and nervous about my own fertility. Thanks for clarifying so much!

I am 30 and have endometriosis. My doctor says it’s in remission and I recently started having periods again after 9 years of not (backstory: had surgery to remove endometriosis and cyst scar tissue at 21 and the doctor thought it was a good idea to put me on high hormones to stop my cycle so I might have a chance to conceive without help later) Does that mean my egg count would be ok still since I haven’t been ovulating and have taken my birth control religiously. This has been so helpful and I have hope that I might have the child I want without help

With respect to fecundability, are the pregnancy rates you mention adjusted for miscarriage risk? I.e., does a woman between 34 and 37 who has an 11-12% chance of becoming pregnant, still face a high chance of miscarriage, or is it that she has a 11-12% chance of becoming pregnant in a given month that will lead to a live birth?

I've stopped taking the pill about 6 months ago but ever since my periods are very irregular and far from looking normal. Are there any chances of becoming a mom regarding my age and hormonal imbalance pills have caused or I should just forget about it. I will appreciate any response ❤ Thank you

I am yet to come across statistics that mention the differences between "Advance aged maternity" from women who have had children before and "Advanced aged maternity" from women who have never given birth before. I'm in the second category and, to be honest, I am under the impression that nobody on YT/Media is bothering to make that distinction when talking about 35+ women going for pregnancy through IVF.

Your videos are super informative, thank you! Do you have thoughts on how to balance the pregnant body's need for choline and folate - which are highest in animal products like liver and eggs, and the data that seems to suggest plant based is best for fertility? It seems that those 2 facts oppose one another and make it so confusing figuring out how to navigate. Thank you!

Hey Natalie, thanks for the video!!! Just a quick question - would you say, just how the number of eggs doesn't really dictate a woman's ability to get pregnant, but it provides insight into reproductive functionality (have I got all that correct?), would you say a similar thing about sperm count with males? Or is sperm count indeed indicative of the likelihood of pregnancy?
@NatalieCrawfordMD
@NatalieCrawfordMD 3 жыл бұрын
you are right exactly about eggs. For men on the other hand, it takes millions of sperm to fertilize an egg (they work together as an army), so count directly impacts success rates

It took us 4 years to get pregnant with our 1st daughter when I was 28(also had a miscarriage the month before getting pregnant with her) vs getting pregnant the first month at 35 when not even trying. We are thinking we might want one more child after having her, so I wonder if it's something we should try right after we have our baby🤷🏻‍♀️

Jessica, please don’t lose hope. My AMH was 0.42 and FSH was 25 on cycle day 12. I was told I’d only get pregnant with donor eggs too. I have three kiddos now, conceived naturally without any fertility treatments since then. ***There is always hope.*** I didn’t have other issues going on so, like Natalie said, do see a specialist. If one doesn’t give you hope, maybe see another? Good luck to you. Infertility sucks. It’s such a hard journey to walk.

@@carolines3953 I wanted to be in your position, but unfortunately stage 4 (silent) endometriosis, and severe myomectomy scar tissue completely destroyed my fallopian tubes. They had to come out (they were bilateral hydrosalpinges). I was told IVF was my only option to conceive by my regular OB/Gyn, but when I went to see an REI, they said I would never conceive with my own eggs (I was too old, and basically had none left). It was a tough spot to be in.

And have use all types of birth control from shots, parches and currently on the pill. It has been affecting my hormones and want to get off but also concerned of the possibility of getting pregnant. I would use natural family planning. Although, menopause is right around the corner if not here already, and that could be the reason why the pill is causing issues now, either way, you may need some other form of hormone therapy if you have reached menopause.

Can I just make a comment but doesn’t having low AMH reduce your monthly probability of conception let’s say a 35 year old with 15 eggs monthly and one with 5 monthly doesn’t the lack of selection decrease your chances. Less natural selection opportunity in selecting a healthy egg. I do understand that the possibility is still there for natural conception but I assumed the probability is lower due to low numbers of eggs for natural selection by our body. So I assumed if you have a healthy AMH you have a normal 15% chance of conception monthly whereas if you have low AMH due to poor natural selection numbers your chances are still there but now at 10% example. Makes sense this is how I always pictured it.
@jessburr1985
@jessburr1985 3 жыл бұрын
Then if you the person or partner has any other fertility issues that percentage keeps dropping so ultimately you get some women only getting a 5% for natural conception meaning it is going to take much longer to get pregnant months/years and in that time AMH keeps decreasing lowering your odds even more. So that’s why IVF is so important in women with low AMH to get in there before it’s too late. Is this correct understanding please ?
