As a 25 year old I realized that the reason you always feel like a 16 year old is because you're always going to be the same person. I was so confused at 21 feeling 16 or 23 barely feeling 18 until I talked to an actual 18 year old and realized that I don't relate to an 18 year old anymore, I just feel like me and that hasn't changed. When you're young you always feel like you can relate to older people, when you're older you still feel young but you realize you don't relate to young people in the same way. If you grow up loving celebs and fandoms like me you'll never stop at any age, it doesn't mean you're stuck, it just means it's a part of you.

Thanks for saying this. A lot of my family makes fun of me, a 26-year-old, for getting excited about the Grammys, the Oscars, the Met Gala, new albums, a certain tweet my favorite musician posted, etc. But it's just something I love, and it's nice to hear from others who feel the same way.

@@elizabethsauppe6865 Yeah, I totally understand. What helped me realize it's normal and nothing to be ashamed of was a quote by C.S. Lewis, "Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." He was talking about the fantasy genre, but I think this perspective can be applied to anything. Maybe people thought your fandom love was just a "phase" or something, but there's no reason your hobbies can't grow with you.

I've also been thinking about this lately and relate to it a lot too. I recently turned 26 so it's been a year or so since I've been in the 18-24 "young adult" demographic, but until you're 25+ or close to it, you do not realize how you don't just change overnight. You'll still be you and carry some hobbies/interests with you. Also, time flies so quickly compared to the teenage years, so to me, something that happened 4-5 years ago doesn't feel that long ago, but may feel like awhile ago for someone younger.

this is so accurate im 21 n have a teenage brother n some teenage cousins n interacting with them is what helps me feel my age bc even tho i can talk with them abt celebrities, shows, movies n the like i can see the way we interact with these things is different, their relationship with these things r what mine were like when i was deep in fandom as a 16yo which is nothing like how i interact w it now

i love that part about how young girls are expected to drop all their hobbies and things that they love to become a mother and/or wife. i never thought about it like that but it’s so true, maybe that’s why growing up is scary cuz we subconsciously know we’ll “have” to sacrifice what we love. well that fkn sucks.

Now that I am 22, i've had people STILL ask me why I still enjoy listening to one direction and little mix like there is NO age limit to supporting your idols, it's so annoying!! On the point about copying clothes and aesthetics from our faves: can't it just be that people like it? There's things about your faves (their sound, brand, aesthetic) that draw you to them over other artists. There's things about clothes and aesthetics that make you buy some clothes over others. Maybe stans that adopt their fave's aesthetics do it just because they enjoy it. On the point about older stans connecting with younger artists: This conversation is always about adults who like Olivia but never about me at 8 years old being fully immersed in White Horse by Taylor or at 9 years old bopping to Tik Tok by Kesha. Could I as a young child understand the circumstances those songs are about? no. Did they still sound good to me and tug on my heartstrings anyway? yes. Why can't the same go for adults that like pop music made by teenagers? It's pretty and it's emotional because that's what good music does to you, you don't have to be living that same experience for a song to do it's job.

I def feel this as an older K-pop fan who’s been in the fandom for 10+ years. I don’t like interacting with younger fans, I think they should have their own space and I’m not always interested in being involved, and I have more “space” between me and my hobbies. Which, honestly, I think has been a key part in staying a part of my chosen fandoms

This one! I’m in my early to mid twenties and a stan for more than 10 years, I went to KPOP Flex a couple of weeks ago and istg these kids there were build differently. It was the first time in a while that I interacted with way younger people especially with Enhypen being there and besides listening to the same music and liking the same artist we didn’t have much in common. It felt weird once the topic drifted from the artist in question. That’s when I realized, that I actually grew up, what was my biggest fear up to that point (mainly because people around me keep emphasizing this). I felt up to that point, that kpop is something I should have left in my teens and shouldn’t be invested that much anymore. But talking to these kids made me realize that this hobby grew with me and will always be part of me. That was actually a quite comforting thought. People also refuse to believe me that I am with 24 years old the Maknae of my kpop friend group, as if it’s unheard of that someone is above the age of 13.

I'm turning 30 this year and my close girlfriends range from 30-33. We all love Olivia and plan on seeing her if she has a show near us! We don't really think about the "aesthetics" around an artist, we just love their music, even if we aren't their target demographic. I still get really into finding the easter eggs Taylor Swift puts out there, and love reading theories on what she's going to be doing next. I grew up listening to her and watching her videos on the VH1 morning countdown. It's not like you just flip a switch when you get to a certain age and then all of a sudden you're not a fan of an artist anymore. It really is a benefit of being older to have jobs to support our concert fund that we didn't have when we were teens 😂

being 21 on stan twitter specifically is a hellscape because mentally i am basically the same as i was at 18, but people treat you like you're in your retirement era (oops i referred to life stages as an era...). it's interesting to see how dynamics change as you grow up in a fandom, but i definitely agree with that one comment about how i interact in fandoms much differently now, i hardly partake in drama and honestly, i support minors only interacting with minors if that's what they prefer. i tend to only interact with 18+ stans now too because i don't really have much in common with how minor stans partake in fandom culture. i definitely feel its because when you're an adult stan, fandom is less about shaping your personality and more an escapism

as an 18 year-old now i would say that my “peak” in fandom culture was when i was 14, interacting with other stans, being in group chats and having fan pages. and i still feel connected to those fandoms the same way i did four years ago, with the people i was stanning being around 18 back then and in their (mid) twenties now. i’ve now gotten to the point where celebrities are “finally” my own age and while i would still consider myself part of their fandoms, i approach them differently. i still watch edits, know what drama is happening and everything, but i don’t actively interact with other fans the way i did back then. i somehow also can’t shamelessly “swoon” over them, because they’re my age and i feel like maybe if i ever hypothetically ran into them in a couple of years, it would be weird. i also feel like i can’t keep up, when i see someone famous who seems to have their shit together who is my age, because when i was exclusively stanning older people, i knew i still had time “to be like them”. the other thing is that the music i listened to back then that contained this idea of the teenage dream (for me that was the first two 5sos albums) made me really excited to be an older teenager, but now i feel like i’m running out of time, because i haven’t experienced it yet, which is really scary.

I find it comes from both ends, I’ve experienced a lot of younger fans who perpetuate this idea that you have to ‘grow out of’ fandoms and stanning. I collect kpop stuff and I see discourse about this constantly, it’s really sad because people who have that viewpoint are not only harming those they speak to, but they think growing up means you have to give up hobbies you enjoy :(

It’s definitely weird being 22 and watching 14, 15 year olds get really into the same bands/artists I loved at that age. It’s hard not to want to “gatekeep” those artists or feel like us older fans are the “real fans”. It just feels like there’s a group of us that grew up loving 1D or taylor, like we’ve been here since 2011/2007. It feels like they’re the artists of our mini generation (maybe people 20-29). But I also love that there’s more acceptance of fangirls and teenage girls aren’t insure about their music tastes anymore. I do love the 21+ fangirl events because it’s a fun way to indulge in something I’ve always loved, and with the people who experienced the same things with me.

i'm 30 and i still am a kpop stan. i got into because the music was fun and brought me peace and comfort and still to this day does. it's something that brought me a lot of happiness and that isn't going to change just because i get older. it's so weird to me, that i am - at the absolute most - 7 years older than the members i stan, and most of the time am the same age or a year or two older than the members i stan. i see other fans who are extremly young - commenting on vlives etc. about middle school exams and such. then i also see women in their 40s and older make really creepy smutty stories and fan art about the members they stan. it feels like there's no middle ground. either you need to be a very young person, or if you aren't, you're painted as being one of those older fans who do post questionable things. i just want to vibe to the music that brings me joy, and support the groups that have made me feel safe and loved over the years

Honestly this video made me feel so good about being a 22 year old engaged in fan culture. I started following BTS religiously around last year and as much as I love every bit of it I couldn't stop thinking like somehow I am too old for this fangirl stuff like watching their content or going crazy over JK's abs...The fact is I loved every bit of these feelings but somehow I wasn't allowing myself to feel good about this because this doesn't fit into the societal norms for a 22 year old. Not just societal norms but just the general perceptions around being 20 something like going out for parties, getting drunk, having sex , enjoying the freedom...I don't do any of these things but somehow this is how being 20 something year old is celebrated among the younger crowds . On the other hand being a fan girl is often mocked and ridiculed as it's often considered ' for teenagers '. I want this perception to change because it is really demeaning and unfair to people who might not necessarily have the same priorities. What's worser is it starts to impact upon ur mental health especially when u r already dealing with problems like adjustment issues and repetitive thoughts. My truth is I love sitting in my room watching Run BTS or my fav kdrama/anime over any of the stuff i mentioned above. When people around my age love forgetting their problems by resorting to alcohol/drugs i do it by listening to my fav BTS songs. I want people to acknowledge that not every 20 year will have the same priorities in terms of what they love, what they do, whom they follow and what community they belong to.

I feel the same way and I think you expressed what I thought perfectly. I'm 20 and I've been into kpop for 5 years and the love i have for groups like bts has never really changed. And I've seen so many people, even fellow fans themselves, criticise and make nasty comments about fans our age. It's liked I'm being constantly ridiculed and there's a "childish" narrative pushed on me for something that is a hobby I have, just because I don't enjoy doing stuff like going out and partying like what's expected from my age group. And it's extra weird to me cause it feels like the "party culture" is seen by a lot of teens and young adults as the maturity key when there's so much more next to it.

My "teen idol" growing up was Billie, she's the same age as I am and through my teenage years I had this attachment to her and her music because it felt so relatable to my adolescence. I don't know if it is because I am older now but I feel like Billie has definitely matured passed the "teen angst" branding that was associated with her and her music and style and overall persona seems much more adult. I find this refreshing because I find more and more that there are limits to which I can relate to teenage pop stars like Olivia for example.

It seems I'm one of your "older" audiences hah, but to add my two cents... I've been in the fandom life for over 15 years. Granted, it's more fictional character/shows oriented than music (I did dabble however in the emo culture of the mid-2000s, no ragrets), but as a now 29yo pushing 30 I'm starting to see straight up ageist comments about how "old" or "proper adults" shouldn't be in fandom life, which is bonkers to me. Especially since, like you, I have found work in the industry that gave me so many fandoms to be a part of. All my obsession over tv shows has led me to pursue a career in the tv world and now I make a living working on shows that give the same young ones who leave ageist comments a place for their interests. Ironic. It's exactly as you said, it's the "old people" that are giving the young ones material that they obsess over. All the good fics you read and love so much? All written by the "proper adults". If you wanna push them out, you have to be willing to sacrifice the good stuff. Interestingly enough, I too feared of letting go of the things I loved when I was a kid because there was this expectation of us entering the "real world" when we become grown-ups (yet guys can fanboy over sports and comics all they want without facing criticism; but when a mum does it, she's a bad mother, she should be focusing on feeding her baby because that's her whole world and she should never have time for herself ever). The truth is, you can absolutely still love what you love. The difference is you just start to enjoy it from an experienced perspective and that's a good thing. So don't be afraid to continue loving what you love.

I think tumblr definitely helped me build the creative careers and hobbies that I have now. I'm 22 & work as an art director in the film/entertainment/event industries, I've been on Tumblr since I was like 14. I never had the capacity to be a real committed fangirl like a lot of my friends, I was just an observer of those groups, & I was more into just the aesthetics of Tumblr (like the California sunset girl pics and the skater skirts and big cities and depression-core bs) but grew out of that pretty quickly when I graduated hs. However I still have my Tumblr account, and it's turned into a place where I go to read poetry excerpts from very unique blogs that i'd likely never come across elsewhere, & find the most interesting and creative paintings, illustrations, fashion, photography, films, etc. Like over the years I carved out the aesthetics that make me feel things and are important to me, and that group of writing and images on my blog is completely unique compared to anyone else's collections, just as theirs are completely unique to them. And I've been able to subconsciously add that aesthetic sense to all of my art direction/design work, and it's been successful.

I was never really focused long term on gaining a following on Tumblr either, like it really is just a personal blog that some strangers follow. A few people I know irl still follow, but I've blocked a lot of the others, just to keep my space personal without influence or worry of judgment each time I reblog something. & reading so much poetry and finding these images that speak to me deeply has also helped me understand myself, just as the music helps fangirls process. It is way easier for me to feel less alone and truly understand and accept my feelings when I see them stated in the most creative and rich language, even if it's feelings and words full of despair, seeing them presented that way makes me feel very human and understood.

It’s crazy to me that some people (a lot of them on the younger spectrum of fandom) don’t think that adults should be a part of fandom culture because as you pointed out, a lot of them build some of the more structured things within fandom that a lot of us enjoyed when we were younger. I’m 24 and I organized a holiday gift exchange for a fandom I’m in last holiday season and halfway through that project, I realized that several of the people who’d signed up were minors and, in a way, I had been that teenager years ago and was now on the other side. Adult fans organize events, campaigns, write amazing fanfic and all sorts of things because maybe these things don’t consume their lives as they did as teenagers, but they can become hobbies they deeply love and enjoy. Fan spaces are meant to be shared and it’s part of what makes them special!

As an 18 year old going through university, I've noticed I tend to gravitate towards 'influencers' that have both certain aesthetic or look that appeals to me, and also a skill or talent that is something different from the usual singing and acting. Especially with the abundance of accessibility nowadays, it's easier for me to find more people that don't fall into the scope of the basic 'popstar'. The people I like for example: Lauren Tsai, Gazi Jarin, or artists like Malù dalla Piccola, or even ig models like Cindy Kimberly. I just find it more relatable in a way, and have similar goals.

that's why I love the BTS' fandom, it's so welcoming to people of ages, I'm 24 and almost every ARMY i meet is the same age as me. Like I don't get why some people expect you to hit your 20's and not like the things you liked when you were a teenager anymore, it's so weird. I remember getting hate from kpop fans (not armys) for being TWENTY and they were calling me a hag and a bunch of other things like um sorry for being able to buy the merch I want and go to concerts whenever I want without asking my parents? also my faves are the same age as me I relate to them a lot more than you do?, ageism in fandoms is really weird.

I’m 14 and i feel like I have the opposite problem of being “to young” to be a fan girl bc im a fan of artists who have had a massive fandom longer than I can remember. I can’t remember when one direction where in their prime the first Taylor swift album is older than me ECT. But even with younger artists the overall vibe I get is fans being in their late teens early 20s this isn’t a jab at older fans bc Ik it isn’t all of them but I’ve had Billie, olivia ect fans tell me I’m to young to be a fan girl even tho I would be the “target audience” for fangirls. Idk I feel like this sort of relates to you saying fans in their 20s still feel like fans in their teens so a teenage fan being 10 years younger than you probably feels weird

The new fandom aesthetic you spoke of in this video is just literally due to kpop becoming mainstream and thus influencing fandom culture at large. Kpop fandom has had this very specific romantic aesthetic since like at least 2014.

I turned 22 last month and I totally agree with the 24 year old who sent in that message. I know self control now, I know how to compose myself so that I wouldn’t be embarrassed if ever one of my idols was to see anything I did or said about them. I am mostly secure in my fandom and don’t feel pressured by others to do things in order to feel like a good enough fan (I’ll never forget the way certain older Taylor Swift fans I followed as a teen would act like they were superior bc they listened to all of Taylor’s unreleased music). I was worried about growing up for fear of losing that “teen fangirl” identity, but I learned how to keep that part of me while also growing into a new part of my life. And I let absolutely no one make me feel bad for still being a Shawn Mendes fan 8 years later hahaha

I'm 21 and I'm still active in fandoms that I belong to although not in the same way I was when I was 14. I aged, matured a bit, got a job and want to start living totally on my own. I used to think it's cringy to be 21 and still in this fandom shit and I felt some kind of embarrassment about it when I was starting seeing a guy. He's 28 and not so passionate about music but he told me that it's cute and good that I find so much comfort in music and being a part of a fandom. He likes listening to me when I tell him the story of how BTS or Blackpink were formed even though he's not a kpop fan (just a casual one because of his dad and me) because that's what I like and he's happy to learn about things that are so important to me. Maybe a bit off topic but we're dating for a month now and just wanted to share :>>

I think for me the pandemic happened my freshman year or college and because I’m immunosuppressed I choose not to go back when the world started opening up. So I got all the experiences high school gives you and I got a taste of the college experience. But now I’m in my hometown with very few friends and I’m stuck in limbo, it floors me that I’m turning 22 in a month. I’m listening to this music and connecting it to high school and missing it. And then I remember I hated high school I would not want to go back. But you also wouldn’t know that from my Instagram.oh and I was mostly in the “nerdy read not like other girls fandom” and was told things like “I’m glade you can’t get tattoos because you’d get the fault in our stars clouds tattooed” guess what, I have a Looking for Alaska quote on my arm now. It got my through the awful teen years it’ll get me though the rest of my life.

I'm 26 and I've been a fangirl since I was 11. It all started with the Jonas Brothers, then I bounced through a couple other fandoms, and now I've been In the One Direction space for 10 years. I definitely think the way I engage with the fandom has changed as I've grown, but I still very much feel a part of the community. The fact that so many people, both in and out of the fan community, seem to think that the second you turn 20 you just drop every aspect of your personality to become a hollow shell of a person that does nothing but pay taxes and/or care for children absolutely baffles me. I always thought the older people in the fandom were so cool and it's honestly been amazing to grow into the older fan that some younger fans look to for stories of what the fandom was like a decade ago (it happened when I went to see Louis and I loved being able to share my stories!). As I've aged I don't really feel the need to make online connections or get involved in drama. If I do make online friends that's cool, but I don't feel like its absolutely necessary like I did as a teen. I still use twitter to keep up with everything, but I don't feel as much of a need to forge connections or become a big account. Instead I've made a bunch of concert friends because of these guys which makes every show like a little family reunion. For example I made a bunch of friends when I camped 19 hours for Niall in 2017 and we still find each other at shows to this day and make a point to get to each other to catch up. I've always been confused by the stigma that older fans face so I'm really glad you made this video!

I started to think about this topic a lot after I got ciriticized by my close circle for being 24 and still fangirling over some kpop groups but I realized the most reliefing part about getting older as a fan is as you educate yourself through experiences, your relationship with your hobbies evolve in time. You learn what to prioritize in your consumption habits and having that sense of control makes you feel not ashamed of who you are.

I'm so glad that you made this video on the topic and also included older fans. I'm in my 30s and have been into fandom culture since my teenage years. The fandoms I'm into have changed through the years, as well as how I engage with other fans. The reason I'm glad that you spoke about the ageism and misogyny around older fans is because part of my experience as a fan who posts on TikTok is being told that I'm too old to enjoy my fandoms in my comments section. Some of the younger fans who post these things are incredibly cruel. I hope that maybe one day they will understand that you don't have to give up fandom when you're older.

10:05 - to feel excited for the heartbreak it's so messed up. It's a very uncomfortable emotional pain that takes months or even years to get away from (of course, depending on the person). Although it's the "aesthetic" that people want to live nowadays, I really want them to think more carefully about it because it's not something you should be looking up to. Seriously, don't romanticize that heartbreak.

One thing that I think is important to mention in this conversation is that adolescence doesn’t end once you stop being a teen. Until around age 25 when the frontal lobe is fully developed, people are still considered adolescent even if they are of legal adulthood. As a 21 year old who is still pretty active on stan Twitter I have to constantly remind myself that my existence in these spaces is valid. So although there’s a distinction in legal adulthood and obviously age differences, we all possess similar attitudes and preferences, and that’s completely ok as long as clear boundaries for interaction are in place between fans.

This video wasn't what I was expecting from the title, but in a fascinating sort of way! I'm 28, have no involvement in TikTok or Pinterest so it was really interesting to learn more about what teenagers are up to with fandom aesthetics etc. It's amazing there are so many possibilities for expression of fandom these days. I'm convinced that the generation gap is shrinking by there being different age generations within fandoms (not so much in the teen-oriented music you discuss here), in my experience with older music from the 60s/70s/80s - younger fans make memes that boomers just don't understand, and unfortunately misogyny and ageism can occur in these interactions and result in gatekeeping (recently came across a fantastic academic article which coined the concept of "age capital", like privileges of older music fans - I think you'd find it interesting). Gatekeeping is ironic cos on the one had, they might say "kids these days don't appreciate (old) good music etc etc" yet when younger people (especially girls) express an interest in this music, the older fans can be sceptical and want to exclude them... Equally, older people are more likely to be listening to more recent music too, so gigs can really pull a mixed crowd these days.I saw Declan McKenna play live a few years ago and while I wasn't the oldest person there, it's funny that, being 27 at the time, I kind of felt like it haha. Really enjoying your videos, keep up the good work!

thanks for making this video!! i turn 23 this week and it's so weird. i still feel 18 mentally and love a lot of the same things. i think a lot of adults feel that way, we're just expected to hide it, be quiet, and work on our careers to keep the wheels of capitalism going lmao (and some teens act like we're about to retire). the difference between what society says adulthood is and what it actually is is huge. it's such a strange time man, it's hard to fit in anywhere but this makes me feel better!

I think music elitism is part of the reason why teenage girls are mocked for enjoying and liking mainstream pop music people think that they are "brainwashed" by this type of music when they think it's too shallow while viewing rock or classical music as "authentic"

I’m relative noob to online music fandom at age 24 lmao. This video was interesting for me. Edit: and I totally relate to that 24 y/o’s comment. As of now, I’ve been only 3 months into a specific K-pop fandom. Being in this space, I find myself actively challenging biases I didn’t know I had about fangirling, and why I choose to move in certain ways as it relates to my age. Challenging your own biases while slowly becoming the person you had biases about is…interesting to say the least. Being in a small community of other adult fans who’ve been into this for much longer is validating and has taught me a lot. That said, I’m not on Twitter. I stick to small communities like discord servers, occasionally Reddit. So I don’t have that firsthand experience of stan Twitter (thank goodness lmao).
