here’s another installment of the evolution of series, focusing on girl groups! in this video i go over the history of them, how their style has changed, and some of the things that these groups bring to the table culturally and socially.
i think the changes we’ve seen with the girl group over time are so interesting to see and i can’t wait to see more girl groups take over in the future HOPEFULLY

I find so interesting how the kpop system is now being adapted for other markets, when kpop idol groups were originally inspired by Japanese idols and American styles and music genres, it’s like things are coming full circle
@CheerUp2
@CheerUp2 2 жыл бұрын
I think because they perfected it. It started out similar to Japan and America but eventually it became there own and they got it down to a science. And now people paying attention, other markets thought they were doing it the best when slowly Korea has been rising to domination. also I know this video was about girl groups but its interesting the most successful group out of kpop BTS. I think of the main reasons they are as big as they are is because they went alittle outside of the usually kpop route. Yes it was an audition program but the fact that the ceo was like "yo just write about your lives and stories. I wont force you to practice and give you strict rules, all I ask is you infuse you life experiences into genuine music" For kpop its mainly stuff being given to you and being forced to follow what the company says, but since they were given so much creative freedom, people liked that and felt a genuine connection to them and grew such a massive loyal fanbase. Ive seen companies in japan say "we could make out own BTS if we wanted" but you cant made that.....since again it came from there lives and there growth as humans.

@@CheerUp2 kpop as a whole and Bangtan specifically getting so big is a very fascinating phenomenon with so many factors at play and so many things lining up at the right time and I find it very interesting. Like of course good music, hard work, talents and skills all play part in it but so do having the right timing and straight up luck and it makes me wonder how they would be doing if they had done everything the exact same but at a different time. Also I think that how big the country is also plays part of that makes sense? Like the US and the UK have a lot of influence on other country bc geopolitical stuff and the US specifically is a very big country with a lot of people, and Japan also has a lot of people and that gives them very big markets that can just, exist and keep having new artists come into the scene and find an audience. But with smaller countries like South Korea there’s only so many popular groups you can have before it gets saturated and people get tired of it and that’s why when kpop labels noticed there was an interest overseas they took the chance immediately. If you compare Bangtan with the biggest japanese boy group (Arashi) like, they never really did anything that was marketed specifically for overseas fans cause the jpn fans are more than enough to keep the show going. Or (since it’s a video about girl groups lol) the focus Blackpink has on international audiences is huge compared with the one that AKB or Nogizaka have had (I hope this comment makes sense cause I feel like it’s all over the place) Edit cause I forgot to add that Japanese “BTS/kpop-like” groups are still very much intended more to the japanese public itself since the cool images and polished performances are what the public (esp young people) are interested in today, and they still make a small portion of the music scene. As successful as JO1 or NiziU et all are sells wise they are still just One More Act out of thousands and a good chunk of the population has never heard of them, meanwhile Bangtan or Blackpink are very well known domestically and internationally and sometimes whatever they’re up to even makes the news
@CheerUp2
@CheerUp2 2 жыл бұрын
@@parurushi I agree it very much timing as you said and a bit of luck. Hard work of course but the timing helped so much. Like since they were small and were on shows they used social media a lot. At the time not many other kpop groups had there own twitter and youtube channel that they could randomly post to. It was the company channel and group channel that only posted music videos and serious stuff while they posted goofy stuff that a lot of fans enjoyed. Thats also when more and more people were getting ipod touches and iphones and could carry there social media with them. I remember being in highschool and switching from older flip/key board slide phones to an iphone and watching there silly videos during lunch and after school. So the timing of them getting on social media really helped. Korea for sure catered more towards over sea fans for sure. A lot of times you couldnt even get the full music video or behind the scene stuff with japan, which felt very limiting. Basically i agree with every point you made lol

LITTLE MIX IS THE PERFECT GG (atleast in my opinion) They have the TALENT. They have INCLUSIVITY. They can DANCE. They can SING. They can HARMONIZE. The also had more Body inclusivity when they were a 4 piece but still. They also did soooo well in past decade that they are really one of the most successful gg in HISTORY. They achieved sooo success while making and breaking records. And they did all this while constantly being scrutinized, not getting appreciated, getting sabotaged, suffering racism & sexism and soo much more... I definitely think that it takes sooo much from them (that we don't know about) to be in a girl group for 10 YEARS and still be "relevant". I truly hope that they get to have the glorious era which they deserve.

To echo @Reded69's comment below - a grave error not to mention Girls Aloud, given their achievements (in the UK at least) at the time! Honourable mention also to Sugababes who were hugely popular. Bananarama in the 80s were also significant because they were total amateurs coming out of punk - they weren't professionals, they rarely sang solos, and had a fresh attitude at the time and demanded more autonomy over their own material. Thinking about boy bands, they've definitely declined in the west - here in the UK we had Take That, Westlife, Boyzone, A1, 5ive, Blue in the late 90s/early 00s, but with the exception of a handful like JLS, Union J and of course 1D at the turn of the decade, there's been a drought of boy bands; I'd posit the rise of male-dominated indie(-pop) bands and later solo artists had some part in this. Perhaps synchronised dance moves became less appealing than guitars. That said, I do think Busted and McFly could be called boy bands despite them playing their own instruments. (this begs the question that how they are marketed/consumed determines where they fall in the "group"/"band" distinction....) It's also weird looking back and remembering mixed-gender bands - again over here at the turn of the century there was Hear'Say, Liberty X, S Club 7, S Club Juniors, and others, although they didn't quite have the success that single-gender bands had. At least nowadays it's steadily becoming more common for indie/rock bands to be mixed-gender. I really enjoy your videos, thank you for flying the flag for intellectual fangirls - keep up the good work and please mastermind a new girl group of your own!

An excellent vid but the fact that you went from the Spice Girls to Little Mix without mentioning Girls Aloud feels odd. Girls Aloud may have not cracked the US market and remain largely unknown here but they did have a significant part in Girl group history.They broke the domination of boy bands in the UK in the early 21st century. They were created in 2002 on the third incarnation of the Popstars franchise, The Rivals, the 5 girls were picked by the UK TV voters from a pool of ten finalists selected by Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri " Ginger Spice" Halliwell. The girls went on to exceed all conventions by not only beating the boy band created opposite them but going on to a consistently successful and long career(21 top ten singles and 6 platinum albums). The first created on TV band to do so! Unlike the two previous Popstars created bands Hear'say and Six, who both fizzled out within two years with basically one hit each. They showed Walsh and Simon Cowell that they can create money making bands on Popstars' successor franchise the X-Factor. And do it by bringing together young, non-professional singers who had never met before. Oddly enough they all seem to have had a WAAAY happier experience than Little Mix, One Direction and Fifth Harmony. Apparently because Simon Cowell had nothing to do with them!

Here's a list of some girl groups I like/I can think of Australian: -The Veronicas(twin duo still going) -Young Divas(they were all solo artists on Aussie idol back in 00s & then like year after idol they joined together for few songs for like 2 yrs) -G-Nation they were on the voice australia this year. A lot of people were annoyed they were on the show called the voice bc they had multiple voices... 🤔 I didn't watch the show but saw a small clip & they sounded great. - Bardot(they were on Popstars before idol was a thing here. Late 90s/early 00s. they broke up after 3 years) UK: Sugababes, the saturdays, girls aloud, atomic kitten, b*witched, Bananarama.

I love your videos and your content! 🧡 Ps: you might want to check "Doce", a Portuguese girl group in the 80s that was revolutionary (especially because Portugal had just become a democracy). Their all story is very interesting because they were created by men and were a man product (you know patriarchy), but they built loads of place for women to embrace their own sexuality and body autonomy (even if the media were horrible to them, calling them prostitutes and everything). They were a breakthrough in the 80s worldwide but were kind of forgotten after that, which is kinda sad.

Also note: I think that’s what happened ever since the beginning of Kpop formations. As far as I’m concerned, when the group H.O.T formed, 3/5 auditioned (one even coming from America, which idk how the heck he or the label has done that) and then were in a house together. The other two were scouted and became trainees, and then performed with other artists under the same label until they were finally allowed to debut, so they stayed under the same house. Other groups currently don’t do that. For example Oh My Girl has a few members living separately from one another. This trainee thing carried on for many years, and with many labels doing the same thing. Some of them started to predebut, which you said about that within 2016-onwards.

Undeniably the kpop training and grouping system is the best out of the best sure it does have its flaws, but we are talking about overall performancs, overall presense, the members can always fit their own aura with the other member's aura because they are trained, they are told like this. And the popularity between each member wouldnt have a big ass gap (at least for most girl groups) like what we see in 5h. So although, the kpop system os harsh, but it is one of the best

Can you do an evolution of boy groups? Please talk about the mistreatment in Kpop boy groups, especially with the 1st gen and 2nd gen. They really relied on their contract so much, and, except for Shinhwa and NRG (rest easy to one of their members), picked the best of their boy group members to sign the next contracts 😒 Note: The Kpop mistreatment and sexualisation of girl groups is extremely horrible. I hate those managements who did these.

if only their label esp interscope isn't shit at promotions they'd could be so much more. they'll get bigger in the US once they release new music in the midst of their solo music they're already dominating over Asia and several countries in Europe

it´s really sad to hear about history, the industry and all the negative aspects about (in this case) how women struggle against the system. But we never talk about how the struggle INCRASE when it comes for (for example) latin american artists. It's almost impossible for an artist from this side of the world to be recognize but the ones who achive that are men. Here we are talking about girl groups and the industry as a whole and non of them are latin americans and our minds would never think of that as a struggle. And yes latin america goes beyond Mexico. If you´re a feminist and you really are into the gap of privilage between men and women, then I encourage you to educate yourself in latin americans topics. The lack of privilage is without a doubt bigger. Thank you for the video, you´re very easy to understand
