Hi Corey, we used to sell that old Symphony tin at our Tinderbox in Portland back in the 80's. It is probably from that era, nicely cellared my friend. You should forget what is in your cellar more often LOL. Keep puffin.

Hello Doug my friend, good to hear from you! ...yeah, I'm sure you've had much experience over the years with this blend....it's a Mac Baren classic! I have so much tobacco around, I can't keep track of it all, LOL! Is that a bad thing? Take care, Corey

i smoked macbaron blends for several years and enjoyed them but then the shop stopped carrying that brand. didn't see them again for probably 6 years. i excitedly bought several tins of my favorites dark twist, Scottish blend, navy flake, plum kake and club blend. i was surprised to find they all bit me terribly and i couldn't smoke them. now that i have some filter pipes im back to enjoying them. ive found that i can smoke dark twist without the filter as long as there is no wind. great blend. its good to be able to enjoy these classic blends again. i need to cellar some but i tend to smoke it all up. thanks for the video. take care

Hello my friend, so good to hear from you! I just watched your video the other day....where you stopped along the road, beside a lake....really enjoyed it, such beautiful scenery. I've heard a few people complain that these blends give them some tongue bite...not sure why, I'll have to look into it more. Perhaps it does have to do with filters and wind, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the good comments, much appreciated! Take care! And be Well! Corey

Thanks for sharing Corey, it's always a thrill to come across a forgotten aged tin! If you Google "Mac Baren Symphony tin 19 years old", you'll come across a post on a forum with pictures from a 1999 tin (it was posted 8 months ago). The tin looks similar but according to the picture on the paper from that tin and the color of the tobacco, I'd guess yours is a few years older. I agree with you about the pleasure we get from smoking many different blends, diversity being the spice of life! 😊

Hello Corey, great chat and nice to see you in the garden! Glad you are able to get out and enjoy some better weather. That 2013Symphony looks great, almost like beef jerky but oh my that 20yr old looks amazing! I can almost smell the richness through the screen..lol. I can only imagine how nice that must be. That older tin has a great look as well. Thanks for sharing that side by side with us! As you said, always fun when you get out to B&Ms and find something with age like that. I need to go watch Janez videos, too behind right now. Hope you are doing well and having a good week. Best wishes!

Perhaps not so quick a discussion, my friend, but a profitable one 😉 It is wonderful to see you again, Corey. What seems seasonable in Portland might be considered chilly in other parts of the country, but I wish that I were there. I've missed my English summers when sweltering is around 70-72F. That's an interesting notion of having a favorite line rather than a specific tobacco, but it makes perfect sense. In the cigar world, particular names have characteristic flavor profiles although the variation across the line man not be as pronounced as it is in pipe tobacco. I can understand your not having a single 'favorite'. You are a connoisseur and an epicure in the finest sense of those words. You have a wide appreciation of the subtleties and nuances of tobaccos and it would indeed be difficult to confine yourself to one or two. The difference between the two Symphony tins is astounding. (You may not be jarring your tobaccos 'properly', but you seem to be keeping them in fine condition 👍). Age has a way of melding and mellowing flavors into something that was unknown when they were young (although I do agree that a 20 year old stew may be an exception!) I, too, have a fondness for burley. It gives a depth and richness in both aromatic and non-aromatic blends. Most of the long-time 'codger' blends are burley based which may well account for their long-lasting popularity. Wishing you many fine days in the garden with pipe and pouch. Be well and stay awesome - peace

I agree that’s its difficult to have a favorite blend when different times call for different smokes. Not to mention that one could have a favorite blend from each category of tobacco. Good video and thanks for sharing the significantly aged vs somewhat aged Mac barren. Cheers!

Hola Corey, I think like you, to smoke so many different tobaccos, we can in the short time that we spend on Earth. This is the wonderful thing we have pipe smokers - a great variety of tobaccos with different tastes. Yes, I also have some tobaccos that I like more than others, but I do not smoke them every day. Only if I want to taste that special taste again, I buy myself a new tin of this tobacco. It's nice to see this very aged MacBaren. He has changed so much in 20 years! It must be a wonderful experience to smoke this or another very aged tobacco. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. Take care, my friend. Greetings from the small island. Michael

Hello Corey, an extremely interesting production. Your faith and enjoyment of the Mac Baren blends is something I can relate to, albeit I do not have the same selection / access to Mac Baren blends, I do have a very varied and comprehensive range of tobacco from Gawith & Hoggarth / Samuel Gawith mixtures, of which I have the confidence to provide me with a very good variety of tobacco leaf preparations and blends . I am rarely in a position to age my tobaccos beyond 12 months, as I tend to break into them before they get any older. Thank you for sharing. Take Care. TTFN

Hi Corey! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm with you, I try a lot of different things. My go-to smoke right now is Luxury Bullseye Flake. I haven't delved into burleys, but when I do I will look for some Symphony.
@portlandpipesmoker84975 жыл бұрын
Hello Jason, hope you're well! Thanks so much for watching, much appreciated! LBF is a great blend, and a favorite for many...another old classic. Burleys certainly can be a more difficult leaf for many pipe smokers, but as long as you stick to the more quality baccy, you'll be alright. Take care, Corey
@trailingthewoollymammoth39935 жыл бұрын
Hope your weekend was great Corey. I agree about aged tobaccos having more enjoyable characteristics. Whether it's true fermentation in the case of Virginias and Orientals or the mellowing of Burleys, Latakias, and Perique, the changed and melded flavors are more often than not better. Happily, I've little choice except to smoke aged tobacco. Around the time of the FDA announced meddling into pipe tobacco, my cellar collection exploded in volume. Now that spike in tobacco is three and four years old and I will have a difficult time smoking through just that in the next 20-30 years, not including the rest of the collection that exited before and has been accquired since that buying frenzy. Estate planning may be needed. Many pleasant smokes. Peace.

Hi Corey! That's really very to see, 20+ years has really done something. I definitely want to try Symphony but I think it's sold under a different name here. So funny, if I were to select a favourite blend it would be Dark Twist for me too! Just a wonderful smoke. Good to see you my friend, be well! I promise to hit you back on Voxer soon. Emil
@portlandpipesmoker84975 жыл бұрын
Hello Emil my friend, so good to hear from you! Yes, I believe Symphony is called Harmony in the EU, perhaps I'm mistaken, but pretty sure that's right. I think Dark Twist for many is a favorite, that's one reason I felt silly saying it, LOL! It had everything a blend should have, and it's very traditional, been around for some time. Take care, and we'll talk soon! Corey

Hi Corey, good to see You again, as for the Mc Barens offerings, in my experience, they simply do not put bad tobacco on the market, all them have their own characteristics and are good on their own,my favorite of their basic offerings is the Golden Extra, and this very Symphony(here harmony) is another enjoyable basic tobacco too, unlike Golden extra Symphony has a bit more virginias and then it contains some minor Cavendish leaf,btw, since we like Burleys I'd urge You to give a try to this very new Amphora offering,The Amphora Burley blend produced by Mc Baren, very old-timey feel,basic burley a bit stronger (harsher at times too)than Golden Extra, but however its a very good value and quality, Best Greets now, Paul

Great video, I’m envious, very hard to find any good pipe tobacco here in Australia, let alone aged tobacco. Myself personally haven’t had the opportunity to experience any real aged tobacco, except for the blends I don’t like that have been stuck in the back of the draw for a few years. Didn’t like them when they were new and can’t say I like any of them now. I can’t but wonder if the MacBarens from 20 years ago is the same recipe as the newer stuff. Seems to me that tobacco companies tweet blends and re-promote them as new, in an effort to tap into the pipe smokers desire for the latest and greatest. Keep up the great work & thanks again

Hello there Scott! Thanks so much for stopping by, and making a comment, always interested in feedback! Well,...that sounds rough in Australia, I've heard other complain, but it's often out of my mind how difficult it could be elsewhere regarding tobacco. @portlandpipesmoker84975 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend! Thanks for watching and commenting! No...I've never had problems with tongue bite, but I've heard others say the same thing. I guess I'd say, perhaps try drying the tobacco out longer, use a filter, and make sure you smoke a bit slower and with no wind. I can think of any other reason you'd get tongue bite. Good luck, hope that helps. Take care, Corey
