At a time when employers are complaining they can't find enough workers to fill 8 million open jobs, we need to recognize and utilize the talents of older adults in the workforce, says Paul Irving, senior fellow at the Milken Institute and the founding chair of its Center for the Future of Aging. He also sits on the WorkingNation Advisory Board.
Ageism is a real threat to older workers and Irving challenges business leaders, hiring managers, and the media to start thinking about older adults in new ways.
"We have this great asset that we can take advantage of, and we're not doing it certainly effectively as we could,. We know that we have a tremendous talent pool in older workers who oftentimes seek to work longer, either because they need to continue to generate revenue, or for the desire for ongoing stimulation and engagement and productivity. And for many people, actually, the answer is both." says Irving.
WorkingNation editor-in-chief Ramona Schindelheim interviewed Irving and 9 other leading voices on the subject of age today, particularly when it comes to older and midcareer adults in the workforce, as part of the Age in America WorkingNation collaboration with Scripps News which begins on-air on June 17.

For this online and written interview series, Ramona and her guests talked about the impact of ageism on hiring and promotions, the benefits to employers of hiring midcareer and older workers, and how a multigenerational workplace can end up helping workers young and old. They also discussed why some adults over the age of 65 need to work or want to work and what it means for our economy and society if they are left out of the workforce.

This is a serious issue in the workplace today. Had a close friend talk with me about how there were comments in his workplace about an older employee being obsolete rather than a valuable resource. The norms in our culture need to change regarding this.

Im a network engineer. I try not yo guve away my age in my CV but its hard when covering the depth of my experience. I was flown to an 8nterview and when i entered the room it was ibvious they didnt expect a senior. They were rude. I knew my chances were no goid so i rold the in no uncertain terms that you dont get someone with my experience right out of college, especially with a great work ethic..one think they asked me was hiw do you feel about taking direction from someone much younger than me. I told them if they had put that oerson in that position i would geve them all the necessary respect that comes with the oosition regardless of age, sex or race. Needless to say i was not iffered the position and tbh was glad wasn't

Right, Lets make a little more profit off your seniors labor is what I hear. Seniors should be able to work If they desire but continuing to make policy that puts retiring out of reach for way too many is disgusting.
