When we speak we transmit energy through sound vibrations. In order to transmit the best energy I think our mind has to be calm. Notice how when people get angry they act irrational and start to curse. So before we deal with people and other animals it's sometimes best to be in the right state of mind as to not create uneeded tensions.

Yes she is not assertive and definitely not the alpha in that pack which she needs to be. The dog is the alpha and knows he can get away with stuff. I am hoping she learned from her training and the dog has now improved as he is just beautiful.

There is also no trust in their relationship. It’s not just about being boss, it’s about cultivating a relationship with love and respect. This is why dogs left in the backyard alone while the family lives inside, often become unruly. They don’t have the relationship they need and they become resentful, on top of making decisions for themselves all day. My best dogs have been the ones I spent the most time with.

Exactly I totally agree, I am the boss in my house and German shepherd knows this without a doubt lol. With any dog they have to know who is the master but especially with this breed. They are very intelligent and will sense any type of weakness and take full advantage of that.

It’s always about training the owner. They have to know how to act/what to do to or else any dog will be out of control.

AGREE 100%. Most people should not have these type of dogs and before they get one, be 110% devoted to training the dog and themselves. I have my first GSD, and have lots of experience with powerful breeds, just not a GSD... so was I over my head? no, because while its my first of this breed, I knew what I was getting into and even put myself and my dog back into training with a trainer to make sure I had the skills to manage her... what I have is a fabulous dog and we do everything together and she is always being worked, physically and mentally. The breeder is at fault as well, and homes should be screened to see if they are a proper fit. I'm glad the owner continued to find a trainer that would help her realize that before someone was mauled.

Lifehack: sign up to be a volunteer at a shelter. Walk some dogs. Most of them have a history, maybe fears, aggression, psychological/physical disorders. Pick a few you’ve walked with before and walk them from time to time. Train them, work on their issues. It’s really helpful, especially if you want a dog. Our local shelter has a huge dog, no idea what breed, he’s so energetic and playful yet fearful of men. I walked him once, in the Moscow winter, and he was pulling me *all the time*. Dogs like him need a lot of training, so you get experience whilst also helping a beautiful creature get a home.

I agree completely, when Tom was trying to incorporate the owner back into the training she was extremely arrogant suggesting that the dog already knew how to do all of that. If that's the case then why are you there?

I've been a professional dog trainer for almost 49 years now & this is the first time I saw the show. LOVED it! My background is first military training of dogs, police then on to Service Dogs. Got the first Seizure Alert Dog Bill passed in the world in 2002. I would like you to KNOW that certain breeds DO understand more than single words in training. accepting complete sentences as they grow older just as a 6 year old child would. To constantly assume that their intelligence is so limited to single word commands is sad. There's a fabulous book out there called "Smarter Than You Think" you can get on Amazon. Yea for sure. Everyone is always so quick to jump on the owners but sometiimes you have a tough nut of a dog with a softer owner and things don't gel, atleast at first.

I have a rescue that was just like that, such s mess my wife thought no hope for him. I was determined and just kept working with him daily. Today I am so glad I did and she is as well. Don’t give up, they just need time and consistency. He is now for sure tied for top spot of best german shepherds I’ve ever had🙌

Both my female GSDs ( rescues) had issues. My first was extremely dog aggressive- spent 5k with a behaviorist- after trying several different trainer/ behaviorists ( that was 2006) She was never perfect but workable. It was extremely difficult because I have lived and worked out of an RV full time for over 20 yrs. Having a dog with severe aggression issues and no “ home base” is not easy! My current GSD is fear aggressive ( 100lb female) but “ workable “ .

Prioritize his issues that need work... he needs to be clearly taught that the aggressive behavior he has shown, which has been reinforced by everyone including Tom by backing away needs to be stopped immediately the build the relationship. The leash work I saw here did nothing to address his learned behavior as forward aggression, barking, biting. The trigger seems via this short video, body pressure, putting on a leash/collar I'm sure other triggers create the behavior and shouls have been identified during the eval. Good luck, be safe. The leash work should be secondary.

You would have done much better with a different breed of dog. The smaller dogs would be much better for you like a poodle or schitzu.This dog should have been rehomed to a younger family, possibly a male who has experience with GSD and large breeds. Taking on a large dog like that with problems is a recipe for disaster. I am surprised that you would have adopted a dog without previous experience working with this breed. Maybe this dog can be rehomed to a family with experience working with this breed. This is a working breed and he needs lots of exercise and a job to do. If you can barely walk him that is not good for the dog. Walks should never ever be a toss-up between a nightmare or a dream. It should be balanced. There are other breeds more suited for someone your age and your lack of experience. I would hate to see a good dog like this put down because it is in the hands of the wrong owner.

Why people get an animal that they don’t understand and can’t train. So many beautiful animals die needlessly because they got in the wrong hands.

This is why dogs are put down from owners not equipped to have these dogs. So many Shepherds, Pitts and big power dogs.

I don't know, at the end she said herself she should be conditioned and not only the dog. So I think she is well aware now. Let's just hope she keeps working on it.

I understand where your coming from but at same time shes trying to do what she needs to make a successful relationship with her dog. If she continues working with upstate then I think they will be ok. Totally understand where your coming from though. I'm one that thinks if you take the responsiblity of owning a dog then you need to follow through all the way till the day on you die. In that time you have to learn and get better.

That's not rude at all, I actually completely agree with you. You cannot have a powerful breed like that and think that just because you yell at it it's going to do what you say. You have to build trust, a relationship, and your dog has to trust in your commands otherwise it's anxiety is through the roof. She seems arrogant, aggressive, and not a good fit for a dog that needs to be properly trained or else will be stubborn. Maybe she should have gotten herself a shih Tzu.

Yeah, my dad was under the delusion that he was equipped to handle a German shepherd and 4 year old me paid the price for that when our dog scalped me and ripped off my ear. I'm lucky to be alive after that mauling. I'm not the kind of person who demonizes any specific breed but it REALLY upsets me when I see people getting dogs they have no business getting.

When I asked my mother to stop talking to the dogs so much she was gutted and hurt *she will have full blown convos* but now she is getting the picture of why it must stop haha

I don't understand what this woman does with this good dog ... it's a work line and needs a lot of stimulation (physical and psychic) it's a real problem in france, and i try evey day to explain that we live with a caracter and a tempérament, not a dog costume... Sheps are indeed all of that our previous shep was such a bully that my dad had to wrestle for seven years before he exempted dad as alpha and he couldn't get help from even the nicest dog clubs due to the lineage of blood from the fathers side that also was a really hard dog, but he turned to best boi after that

I have had pitbull's for 30 years now .no i have never bred or sold animals .just 1 or 2 at a time .in house with me and always knew when i said something they better know i mean it the first time never have whipped or had to put my hands on in anyway. mostly its all in the tone of my voice. Never have been bit or never had one turn on me.just my babies until old age finally got them i love what you do for these animals and their owners. Stay safe

I'm 5 ft 4 and have two Black Russian Terriers. Size has nothing to do with it. Training is. I don't agree with prong collars though. I use a half check on my two and don't have issues.

@@roughhdiamond168 Prong collars are great tools when used correctly. Dogs necks are protected by tons of fur and have much thicker skin than human necks. And comparing a Russian terrier with a GSD is an apples and oranges comparison.

Definitely agree! He does everything, positive reinforcement to the vibration only collars. Like- you can't get better than that, and he has a good kind soul and it just seems like he knows how to approach every problem . Though this dude Normally does bigger dogs like dobermen and German shepherds.

That dog wasn't loaded. He was fine with taking corrections without coming at the handler and isn't what I'd even consider close to Red zone. Maybe yellow/orange. The owner created the behavior by not being clear, and the dog is acting out of frustration from confusion, which gets reinforced every time the owner gives up on whatever task was at hand. Too much negative engagement with the dog from her. This is all OK because she was unaware, and luckily she admitted she needs more work than the dog. Keep it black and white. Command-Correction. Command-Correction.

Not only ineffective but the moment you get mad , you lost the battle . Keeping cool head and continuing working on obedience even when they drive you up the wall is VERY important .The moment you get amped up they do it too and that makes it near impossible in that moment to regain control .

@@ShiftWins This isn't my first training client. I've been intentionally training dogs for 30 years...unintentionally for 50 years. This client started out as me evaluating this dog as a new puppy. Because the owner was hoping the puppy would become a service dog for her, I referred her to a trainer who is experienced with service dog training (I'm more like Tom... behavior based...although I will do puppy training and basic obedience as well...the bulk of my business is behavior modification). This dog is still in training with the other trainer and I've been pet sitting him from just after I evaluated him. He is better behaved for his owner and likes to test me (it's a test he can't win, but he's persistent). The other trainer put him on a prong collar for the same reason I would have...he is smart and darling, but very unprincipled (my term for lacking focus and being "all over the place"). He is a good example of why prong collars are important...his owner can walk him because he wears it. Without it, she would be in danger of being pulled down to the ground when he sees something he wants (i.e. rabbit, bird, etc.) I hope I answered your question. :)

Shelley Jo Neal it doesn’t hurt the dog it applies a pressure not pain the pressure actually calms the dog they use them on service dogs etc you just have to fit it properly and learn how to give corrections so you don’t confuse the dog

Lani I own a very large GSD he was “too much dog for me” I learned too. That collar(s) will change your life. My dog is still over protective, but I can handle him on the snap of a finger. My problem was, I was so grateful for him, (he is illness aware) he got away with being a little to aggressive. So reminders like this are perfect. I use 3 different collars. His life is amazing. I have a lifetime guarantee with training. So I have been back. he has a great life. Hang in there girl! But understand we make our dog’s life harder when we don’t use our skills we have learned.
