Can I just say that this is basically the best -dog- human training video I have seen. This man is so well-spoken, and his scenarios just absolutely clicked with me. So happy I discovered this series. I have 2 GSDs; one is entrained to humans, listens well and is a joy to walk. Her brother is a nightmare. He is anxious and loud and obnoxious. He is entrained to his sister and not to me. Having watched several of these videos, I know where to begin to correct this. I've consulted with several trainers who have given me contradictory advice. If I were video recorded with my male dog, I think I would come across as defensive, so I have compassion for this woman. She is demonstrating courage and a willingness to help her dog. So good for her.

This guy is great at explaining the relationship between dog and person. So many times I've realized that I've projected my own perception and experience onto my dog without really understanding his. It's made training and his learning experience more enjoyable for both of us!

The owner is so rude! Thomas is being very patient and diplomatic.

The psychological aspect as a human when it comes to leading your dog, is something that only comes with time and experience. He is spot-on with his advice, but the application of it is not easy - especially with dogs like the German Shepherd.

Wow. I needed this. I'm a first time dog owner, and I can COMPLETELY understand how I've been leash training wrong. I've been correcting while giving commands and not truly understanding my fault till this video. Thank you so much for sharing this lesson. I have a great Dane pup who is an absolute sweetheart, but has started to show nervousness while on leash. I now see this has everything to do with how I am commanding presence alongside of him. Growing up my family had a dog that was leash aggressive so I've been slightly nervous that he might end up with like My nerves are being passed to him and this video helped me see that Thank you thank you thank you On to doing some happy, calm walks with my drooly boy.

This was AMAZING!!!! I have a GSD girl 18 months that we adopted 3 months ago and she is starting to bark at other dogs, from nowhere, (and just small dogs?) this is new behavior for her, but this showed me what I'm doing wrong and I am so thankful. I want us to have fun on our walks!

I train horses and this kind of client is my least favorite, her body language and tone tells me she is barely listening. The type that immediately gets defensive when they are the problem. The sessions with this type are so tricky but you navigated that beautifully! Lol it’s also why clinicians seem to be repeating themselves all of the time. You’ve got to lay it on thick and hope that some if it sticks!

Also I genuinely actually do love how blunt and honest this dude is because that’s is exactly what’s needed. It’s a waste of time when people try too hard to be nice and sugar coating everything. I’m autistic so it helps that he continues in even when she is interrupting or questioning and fast paced is good for me

I have a GSD who goes after other dogs. I have tried the casual attitude approach only to have her pounce on the other dog without warning. I'll be checking out this video in full, for sure.

First time German Shepard owner and I can even understand this.. love your videos man my dog is a great listener but I can see the habits forming from small things like pressure and one of those is definitely aggressiveness

Another great video! I've started sending these to people that ask me about training. I love the part where you said there are very few actually aggressive dogs, they are mostly just leash reactive. You could totally change everything about a person's relationship with their dog with these videos and help people see their own contributions to the issues they want to fix in their dogs.

As a dog walker of many dogs who are reactive to other dogs or even towards other people and vehicles. I have been successful but often times do over correct. Its something I know but this was a good reminder to help keep it in mind. Also, you explain this stuff fantastically! So thank you!

That just made so much freaking sense it’s mind blowing. I just got my dog, a 3 year old staffy, from the shelter and every time I take her for a walk and another dog approaches I immediately get nervous because I don’t know her background with other dogs I just know she was fine around them at the shelter but put tension on her leash which ultimately leads to her pulling towards the other dog and trying to get to it. It’s not aggressive but the way it’s going it could lead to that. She gets overly excited and wants to say high but she clearly has a bit of a dominant streak in her around other dogs, tail raised and placing her head over the other dogs neck to show dominance, and I’ve never realized she does it because she’s feeding off my nervous energy. She’s absolutely amazing with people and loves everyone, although could use some work on jumping up but I’m fixing it. In the back yard she would always run to the fence and bark at the neighbors dogs but I’ve fixed that and she’s a lot calmer now, all I have to do is fix my habit and hers when she’s on the leash around other dogs

We adopted our girl from a shelter when she was already 10 months old and she started displaying aggressive behavior toward all other dogs, which was so upsetting. Tom explains the problem with prong collars and other tools: the handlers. A prong used correctly is a great tool, but in the hands of most dog owners, it can be abusive. I have a 2 yr. old Rottie whom has aggression towards people not other dogs. But only when person is by themselves. If the person has a dog then there’s no aggression towards the person it’s really weird. Also aggressive towards person on skates, bike, or skateboard. Other than that he’s a great dog.

I've always felt trainers need to train the handlers and the dogs will learn in the process. Tom, you really prove it here especially when the light turns on in her head. Well done!

Nice video, thank you - seeing some of my own flaws with my dog from the owner you are training there. I think for some it can be a vicious circle - dog reacts to something so you correct, next time you see the thing he reacted to you are automatically on guard and nervous, so the dog reacts to that, then you over correct...and boom, dog is now even more reactive and on it goes. Takes a lot of zen to be calm in every circumstance that may be thrown at you, so thank you for the video, very nice job of explaining to the owner how to behave.

yesss I get very stressed in public and it took this trainer for me to look deep within myself. I’ve had a stranger tell me that I’m the blame during a correction session in public however he was very rude... I’m a 23 year old female and my first dog. Also had a fellow tell me my prong collar was abuse though it was fitted correctly- no yanking. I’ll be flipping off the next guy ha I’m so excited for the future with my pups. bruh ive been watching your videos for like not even 2 days and i alrdy got my 5 and 7 year old bullys sitting and staying when they never done that before lol..im inspired to train them better so we can all live a happier life

6:00 sums it up, "DON'T WORRY ABOUT HIM- HE'S GOOD. I GOTTA WORK ON YOU!" I like this trainer and his advice to not over correct makes perfect sense. I am getting a dog and don't know much about training so I welcome the chance to learn. So far what I am finding is that dog owners create most of the problems out of their own fears and insecurities. They often anticipate problems where there are none. They will then often create unnecessary anxiety (in an otherwise mostly calm dog) e.g., when they see other dogs, someone comes to the door, etc. They over correct the dogs and overwhelm them too often by using both physical and mental negative corrections. This in turn makes the dog more nervous and associate daily life/events to negativity. How would we like getting yanked on the neck and yelled at every time we did something less than perfect- or every time another human walks by (even if we didn't do anything wrong)? It would be exhausting. It's all about associative conditioning, calming down and not over correcting. A tired (well walked) and confident dog has less need to be aggressive. On the other hand, a nervous/anxious and insecure dog (because he is over corrected all of the time) will naturally tend to be more aggressive. Think about the awful scenario of a dog fight. Before the fight, the dog's owner does assertive physical and verbal "corrections" or commands. To the dog, it's almost the same thing as what well intending owners do routinely just on a less intense scale but in it's hourly repetition the affects can be similar. Without intending to, over doing it basically is like getting them primed to do battle. Instead, if we relax, the dog will tend to relax as well. Poor training can actually teach aggression. Then there is the whole high energy, high pitched way many owners talk to their dogs that gets them over excited at times when they are already stimulated (e.g., They smell food and you sing..."Wanna Eat?" They see you getting their lease and then you sing..."Wanna Go Out Side?" They hear the doorbell and smell an animal on the other side of the door and then you sing..."Who's At the Door?" Also, giving positive reinforcement (Petting and verbal praise) and the wrong time reinforces what you don't want. If the dog anxiously sits or stops jumping for a split second, just let them be. Not a time to praise them. We are actually acknowledging our own relief to what they did when we do that. My take away is it's often best for people to smile or frown inside but talk and touch less. Have that quality relationship that starts with us first and values understanding and caring over control. I look forward to watching more of his videos and learning more.

I liked this one. Never really noticed that my demeanor changes when other dogs come around. I have a Chow/GSD mix who is a wonderful loving dog, but at the same time she is big and powerful. Trying to anticipate aggressive behavior (an attempt to stop problems before they happen causes me to react profalacticly). It seems so obvious now how this could be stressful and/or confusing to the dog. Great work, I enjoy the videos I've seen, and really enjoy knowing their are people out there helping these animals who get a bad name a majority of the time. For the most part it's very true, no bad dogs only bad (misinformed) owners

Unintended experiment years ago... took my dog to the dog park. I was nervous he might get in a fight, some more agressive dogs were there. No surprise, some aggression between dogs, i tried to handle it, with not so great resilts. The next day, i went to the park, same dogs there daily. I was relaxed, and didnt make a big deal of it. I didnt try to control the situation, just relaxed and watched. The difference was amazing. Mingus handled himself well, probably because he didnt feel the need to protect (or listen to!) a nervous me. No problems. I learned a lesson in calm confidence that day. Train my dog, then trust him to do what he has been taught. He needs to be able to trust me, that I can handle thing, so he doesnt feel he has to take control. Its that trust, both ways, that can make all of the difference. It IS the relationship and bond between master amd dog that can make working together either a pain or a pleasure.

DANG If I was allowed two words to describe this channel, this trainer and this video specifically it would be "THANK YOU!" You just said all the same words I've been saying for so long, but the way you put them all together is amazing and makes so much sense!! I hope you don't mind if i borrow your scenarios because so many dogs and owners are about to be 100% happier with their lives together thanks to you! I like that this trainer is not training the dog itself, he is teaching the owner how to properly handle the situation. There's no use in training a dog if the owner doesn't know how to handle it

Ok, as someone else has said, this vid is not specifically about dog training. However, it is about understanding the dog, how it thinks and learns, how you are communicating with it and the effects of transmitting the presence of a perceived threat to your dog. Its all about learning on the part of the owner. Ok, this is a one to one behaviour rehab session, but....the techniques used by this trainer and his mental approach to the process is equally pertinent in Training Scenarios. Its also nice to see that colleagues in the US face the same issues of a lack of knowledge and understanding on the part of the owner. Personally, I would have moved on relatively quickly to getting the owner to "work" her dog in this situation herself.I always try to remember to keep the "wordy bits" as concise and short as I can.I find it easier to do a quick overview of the "problems" in the interaction between dog and owner. But then, get things moving and deal with each of them as they become apparent in the active part of the session. Then, I personally fee, the owner will consolidate her learning by actually doing IT....The AHA or EUREKA moment is far more likely to occur then, but also having had the "Verbal" bit to begin with. I constantly get the reaction from clients "Ah right, I see now what you meant. By doing such and such I created the reactivity just now." ..I use my own dogs as stooges in just this kind of lesson/session. As she walked and worked her dog around the yard area I would remind her to be aware of her body language and use of leash, for example. and indicate examples of what we had been discussing in the "verbal" part of the session...I may even step in and use the owners dog to demonstrate something that needs altering on the part of the owner......... In other words Ok you get it so far....right , now its your turn to put this onto action.and PLEASE....ENJOY YOUR DOG This is in NO WAY intended to sound like a criticism of the techniques or the Trainer here. It is very very good , solid dog behaviour management being transmitted by someone who is obviously 100% passionate and knowledgeable about what he does, as well as being correct in his techniques and reasons for same.
