For your convenience, the information is also provided below.
1) You want to start training your puppy the moment you bring them home. You should try to get in 1 - 3 sessions each day. Each session should be between five to fifteen-minutes. When training a new puppy, I like to use mealtime as training time. In the beginning, you want to do continual reinforcement, meaning you reward every correct behavior. If you don’t have time to train, don’t feed your puppy out of a bowl. Instead, put the food into a raw bone or Kong and freeze it. Once it’s frozen, you can give that to your dog in the crate. I will help keep them entertained, but it will also satisfy the puppy's need to chew. Don’t try to increase the value of the food. If you do, that’s a lot like giving your dog a pay raise.
2) You’re going to want to start potty training right away as well. I would advise staying away from puppy pads unless you want your puppy to learn to go potty in the house.
3) Confidence building exercises and exposure. confidence-building is simply taking new experiences and associating them with something pleasant, therefore creating a positive association for the dog. Make your puppy believe he’s a super dog.
If something scares them, don’t comfort them while they are scared, but rather act like it’s not a big deal. Dogs will often mimic those they are around most.
Examples:
A) Play tug and let your dog win
B) Have your puppy walk on different surfaces while being rewarded or making it a game.
C) Create a puppy obstacle course
Exposure: Take your puppy out into town as often as possible.
4) You want to make the training as fun as possible, creating a fun learning environment that the puppy wants to keep coming back to.
5) First, you want to start with markers/engagement training | Do 1 minute or so of engagement training before each session. This will help get the puppy into the mindset of learning.
6) Once your dog is conditioned to the markers you want to start implementing free shaping. This will help you create a pro-active dog.
7) Start shaping all the behaviors you would like your dog to perform by first using luring.
8) Next, teach all the behaviors using leash pressure.
9) Once you can get your puppy to perform all of the behaviors with either luring, leash pressure, or both, then you want to start naming all of the commands.
10) You want to teach multiple commands in each session. This makes the training more fun for your puppy and as a side effect, they will learn them more quickly.
11) Once you have a behavior down with the verbal command, then start working the stay command.

He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book kzfaq.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

I work in wildlife conservation in Africa. It breaks my heart how poorly dogs are treated in our area (basically people think the only way to get a dog to do anything or be "tough" for personal protection or hunting/poaching is through beating them). I have been training my Belgium Malinois, Honey Bun through your videos and he is doing great! In Feb 2022 I will be using him as a demonstration for sensitisations to teach 1,700 families about conservation and animal welfare and show that you can treat a dog with gentleness and kindness and they can actually be very well disciplined, confident AND an excellent personal protection dog, much more so in fact than if you beat him. Thank you for helping me to get him to the level where he is today!!!

Training a dog and teaching it to be a perfect companion is a lifelong achievement for both the the trainer and the dog. There are so many things you can learn from the dog, one of the most important being learning to stay disciplined yourself. Everyone should train a dog if they want to be a better version of themselves. That's why I want to have a pet dog.

I am such a bad dog owner, but am using most of the things i'm learning on these videos. My girl was a hoarders dog. 7 months old and the runt, they told me the other animals all bullied her. she was never abused, but she was very rarely handled or played with by humans, they merely fed her the rest of the time i think she was hiding from the other dogs. zero reaction when i wave my hand in her face, she's very happy with the attention now, but it took a few days to get even a little reaction to our attentiion. She wagged her tail first time on the fourth day when i was trying out names, the one she liked that tail just wagged. I think she's brilliant. she is learning so fast. thankyou for your videos, but she will sleep with me and live most of her life on my lap or at my feet or on a leash outside.

My bf came up with the brilliant idea of the "find it game" we ask our 5mo gsd pup to go in his crate for a piece of chicken. Then while watching we hide pieces of chicken around the house and make him wait for a few seconds before telling him to "okay, find it" and off he zooms. Now any time we get ready to ask him to train anything, he runs straight into his crate excited for his favorite game. It's made meal time, nap time, and leaving the house so much better. Admittedly I do leave through the back door most days so he's not aware that I'm leaving but if I can't, a nice handful of treats seem to keep him happy. He was very anxious 3 weeks ago but now he only whines a small amount only for a minute or two, mostly because he doesn't want to nap. Like a kid fighting sleep.

This was super helpful to rewatch. Having watched so many of your videos, I “lost” some important points that I now know I need to go back to so Jedi and I can be as successful as possible. I wasn’t free shaping. I can see now how important this will be to his overall development. He is very in tune to me while I am feeding him his meal while training but take him outside and it’s like he hasn’t learned anything. So glad I rewatched this!

Totally love this! I trained my dog in a similar manner but rarely used treats and now he’s excellent everywhere we go. He aims to please and made it easier to train him and have him always obey commands even in new/scary/busy situations. Agree with the whole no need for the “alpha” technique but I think it’s important to establish yourself as in charge of a situation so when the dog gets nervous they defer to you and understand it’s okay and so if they potentially are in a dangerous situation they will immediately obey commands to stay safe. Love my pup and he’s the best thing ever, thanks for sharing.

I just found you on KZfaq. So thankful for the training you share. It’s just what I need. I rescued 1 of 3, 10 wk old lab. Her alertness and behavior leads me to believe someone has been training her. I look forward to implementing your techniques in order to keep Tulia stimulated and do more in-depth training in order to share a happy life together. Grateful!

I've never use treats to train my dog. My dog obeys commands causeI said so & because he gets Xtra lovin. I only give him a treat after he/she "handled their business" during a walk.

You realize that extra loving is a reward. So you do reward him I have many dogs I have trained and usually a treat with love is a better combo. You have well rounded puppy who is eager to please their owner.

Love this!❤️ I really like the way you inserted video clips to coincide with what you were verbally describing. I can’t tell you how many times I wished other KZfaq publishing dog trainers would do the same, “show me what you’re talking about”, I would think to myself. Astonishing how many amazing points you managed to include in such a short video, thank you very much.

I just got my 8 week old GSD 4 days ago. He’s gonna be my SD as well. This video and a lot of his videos will help. I’ve found that patience is the biggest thing. For example: If it takes you 32 tries to get the leash on without him biting you then so be it. Now at 3am you gotta just pick him up and run him outside even if you have no shoes on lol . Good luck with your new pup!

Well we've already blown this one. There isn't any separation anxiety, but we didn't start using a kong stuffed toy to start with. I think, otherwise, we're in the right direction. We have a crate next to the bed, she started sleeping thru the night, after the third night. She's now been home two weeks, and is sleeping about 7 hours a night. She's in a play pen during the day, or outside with us and our other dogs. Still binge watching!

Hey Nate, Great video once again. I have a short question, and I remember you saying you feed your dogs a raw diet. Can you explain more about how you use kibble in training? Or do you start off with kibble and switch to raw at some point? I guess meal time with a raw diet is very high reward and so what would you use for treats/training in that situation. Hope to hear from you and keep it up, on the way to being the GOAT! :)
