Aggressive german sherpherd dog on walks

Walking their beloved german shepard was always a nightmare. Lunging barking and aggressive behaviour was an ongoing issue they had to deal with while crossing other dogs. In about 1 hour of training the dog is now calm and content on walk. Note that this dog had already been trained in a classroom environment, it knew the basic obedience command. But all this training went out the door as soon as they went into the real world scenario.

There’s a huge difference between an aggressive dog and a coward of a dog, he was flinching away and simply warning the dogs not to touch him because he’s scared.

Haven't watched dog training vids in a while. I had forgotten how many total expert dog trainers will take time away from training their champion dogs to critique another trainer. They never seem to have enough time to post their own videos but hey, there's only so much they can do.

The greatest tool in training a dog, Is by simply training the owner. If you are an insecure individual and lack self confidence in yourself in your every day to day life (I don’t mean with your pet, I mean if you have any strong insecurities and low self confidence in yourself In general) then a German Shepherd or any other large working class dog is not the breed for you. Until you deal with your own insecurities first, Do not try and own a German Shepherd just because you really want one. This is an animal who takes A LOT of work and it needs to be consistent from the day you get s/him, To the day they pass away. I speak from personal experience. When I was a boy, I got a German Shepherd as a Xmas present. We had a couple family pets before the German Shepherd, But these pets possessed an entirely different temperament and I was NOT ready for such a change. I failed in more ways than one in properly training him. My biggest one if which was not socializing him enough with other dogs and animals in general. I grew up in a very small town, So we didn’t have the leisure of going to a local dog park, But still, I should have applied myself more. My Shepherd became EXTREMELY dog aggressive, And being in my early teens having such a large, Aggressive dog, He was very hard to handle. I am now in my early 20’s, And Brutus (My king German Shepherd) is approaching 10 years old. I tackled many of my insecurities and it allowed me to possess more confidence. Confidence that I assert when I am with him and I have since trained him myself. I educated myself, Studied endless books about the psychology of dogs and the psychology of the Shepherd breed. I took some training courses and learned how to be strict, But still apply positive reinforcement. He was the alpha for many years and I have since taken that title from him, And he is a lot happier now that I lead, And he follows. My point to this whole thing is, If you pon’t posses discipline to educate yourself on how to handle breeds like this, Then DO NOT try and own one. All problems start with the owners.

Stormer of course they do! They can smell pheromones of nervousness or fear and are very good at reading slight changes in body language. What a stupid comment. It’s the same with people saying that using a whip on a horse doesn’t hurt it. Then how come they can feel a single fly on their huge bodies? Common sense please 😪 if you don’t know anything about dogs you shouldn’t be on this video.

I hd tried to arrange trainers but no1 turned up as they fear he's not a kid now to learn quietly, I myself hv to handle but is impossible to take him alone, atleast two person needed to take him for a walk

My German Shepherd does the same thing, and I don’t use a shock collar. I just tug on the leash (using treats to reward good behavior) to correct him. When my pup gets worked up I’ll see him focus on everything around him when his attention should be on me. But training is a long process that takes time and patience. Using a shock collar could be a good tool but in this video I think the dog should’ve been introduced to one or two dogs at first before being taken to what looks like a dog park thats crowded and dogs left off leash.

My daughters GS does this but usually someone else’s dog barks at her first! Then when Bella barks back (she has a scary deep bark as she is a big dog 90 lbs). Because she barks back the people act like she is aggressive but their dog starts it. The weird thing is she doesn’t do this at doggy daycare. Gets along great. Only when on the leash walking in the neighborhood.

All you are doing is teaching the dog to fear doing anything at all. You can see half way through the video that the dog doesn't know what to do or why it is feeling pain from the collar chain. The dog is crying. This is not training; I think it's cruel. There is no way that a dog can be "fixed" in one hour, doesn't matter what the scenario. I don't believe for a minute what the final text screen says. I suspect this "training" will not last or something adverse will come from it. This lovely dog could have been taught something instead of being confused and restrained. I do not see contentment in this dog.
@marcostott
@marcostott 6 жыл бұрын
So letting the dog know that his behaviour is unacceptable isnt teaching him anything at all ? What should we do ? Give him treats ? Love and affection ? Yes the owners could walk their dogs without fear after 1 session with them. The dog needs a human that is calm and in control of the situation, it's really simple.
@harbourcitydoggear9057
@harbourcitydoggear9057 6 жыл бұрын
The dog doesn't know why the behaviour is unacceptable; he doesn't do the behaviour because he is scared, not because he now understands. The behaviour is repressed due to fear. There are better ways. I maintain that 1 session is not enough. And maybe the "real world" should be what the dog wants not only what the humans want. Cheers.

Jenny McK you are so right!! now pain with dogs increases frustration. needs to be calm on leash. we don't even know if he's good with dogs off-leash and if he was I would just released him from far away this is a dog park. Dogs need time to play with other dogs and it would be much more fair to teach him to walk past those coming on leash when the other dogs are leashed
@maddy4paws
@maddy4paws 5 жыл бұрын
Jenn is so right. Now you've added the pain of the collar to his frustration. He's probably just wanting to go get the other dogs and may even be afraid of meeting them on a leash you are suppressing all of his feelings. It would make much more sense to try and teach him to walk past dogs on a leash no prong collar who also are leashed. if he's good with other dogs off leash and we know this it would be better to bring him to this... a dog park and let him go to run and play from far away. If he is not good at greeting then it would make more sense to teach him to walk on leap as other dogs on leash and then do some plan play dates with other dogs the owner knows are good with other dogs and work with him on calmly approaching dogs on a leash and then releasing him to play. I grant you it's really frustrating and it can take a long time but it would be better to go a while before making him walk calmly around dogs off leash and just focus on getting him to walk calmly past dogs on leash. that whining sound he's definitely upset and in pain it's not a good thing to get him to associate pain with meeting of other dogs

We live out in the country & my female German Shepherd doesn’t allow any dog to get close because there’s so many stray or loose aggressive dogs around here that she developed this attitude towards any dog that comes around. Which I honor her for because she stopped a dog from attacking me just getting my mail on my own property. When I take her in public and she sees another dog she barks it’s in her nature she’s protective because what she’s around all the time. That’s why I don’t blame her for being that way. But I had to teach her when to stop. I don’t see that being such a bad thing for a dog to be cautious around other dogs. Now if they are loose and attacking yours that’s another story.

in positive reinforcement, one would use the bat method. basically you start at a point where the dog can see stimulus but is far enough to listen to you, and reward calm behavior or eye contact. it takes longer but it lasts forever and, with little to no stress. this is positive punishment where you add an aversive item to stop a behavior....

Some of these comments, you have to do what you need to do with a GS, they are smart and a lethal weapon and they are crazy. They will test you every step. For the safety of the dog vibration training only takes once or twice. Better than having your dog put down or sued if it bites someone, or worse.
@DougHinVA
@DougHinVA 7 жыл бұрын
The note says 'all the training went out the door...' . Dogs do not generalize a behavior learned very well. A dog that learns 'sit' in the back yard may fail to sit in the front yard, for example. From my following top rehabbers (Muto, Gellman, O'Shea, etc.) it looks to me like the dog is being put under too much stress too early. He needs more successes at a distance and only then bring other animals closer but not right up in his face. More successes makes for setting a pattern of further success get stronger. The owners are not skilled amateurs at dog handling. They need a real handler to show them what to do and not do. There is no mention (and no occurence) of another dog running right up to the GSD and attacking. But dogs loose in a park,etc. can do just that.... and then there is a real fight under way. This is why pepper spray is needed at all time when outside. You cannot ward off an attacking dog (or person) any other way, practically and legally.

This isn't training. Training is teaching the dog to think differently. This isn't dog training.
@integra3674
@integra3674 6 жыл бұрын
That is indeed not dog training... dog training is the sit/down excercise. This is reconditioning his behaviour which is psychologicaly and (at a minimum amount of times) pysical correction (as a dog would do) to let him understand what you want from him... setting your rules in your pack... You will not quickly hurt an excited big dog with these small leach corrections. The muscles of the neck are hard when a dog is excited and they don't feel much in that area.. The leach is to remove his attention or correct him when his intensity is too high. You can not remove this intensity with a "sit/down" training method. This is a different approach...
@oshawaxpress
@oshawaxpress 5 жыл бұрын
You won't remove 'intensity' from a dog< ESPECIALLY A German Shepherd by doing this either. All you will do is establish a pattern of negative behaviour. The German Shepherd is behaving normally, that's how they are, it's not aggression and to attempt to physically correct a GS from its normal behaviour is pointless. They are magnificent, highly intelligent and naturally intense dogs.

He feels uncomfortable being leashed while other dogs are loose. Notice he reacted normal to the one other dog that’s leashed. Also notice the other small dog that’s leashed reacting just like yours while he’s leashed. Doesn’t feel comfortable. And all this is wrong. There are no signs of aggression at all. Looks to me like all he wants to do is play. But still, lunging is unacceptable either way.

I do have a GS and I worked with GS and I can inform you that if a GS is that excited, tail up, ears up ..that I don't appreciate an owner to unleash his GS with that behaviour... it's waaaaay too intense. The dog should lower the head and the tail should be down. if the dog would lay down on the leash, that's when I would remove the leash and walk away because the dog is in a complete other state of mind... but you don't accomplish that wish a dog with this behaviour in 1 hour... Removing all the energy before hitting the park would be one of the best ways to bend his energy and to be more calm or have less intensity when meeting another dog

Why did she lift the dog up, at 6.21'??? He/she was approached by 2 dogs, from behind! That's why she/he was a little bit anxious. Seems they don't understand a dogs behaviour... The dog isn't supported by the owner, not protected.

We are letting the dog know that we control its behavior. You think she just lifted a 80lbs GSD ? Without the help of a trainer in this situation her dog could have easily gone after the other dog. The dog is seeing that human is taking control which means DOG can relax 😌 Eventually, when the dog is ready we will let him greet other dogs. He was not ready.

Don't agree with much of this. Why did she pull when the Dog was behind that German Shepherd. The GS was uncomfortable and simply wanted to be able to see the small dog. Was there and reason to pull his leash there. seriously

The owners have to take back control. Doing this lets the dog know that it is the human who can allow when to interact or not to interact. Once the dog knows that the human have taken control of the relationship then it is safer to allow the dog ''to do what it wants''.

If the German Shepherd was completely over the aggressiveness with other dog's than why didn't they let him off the leash? Notice they kept him on the leash and he still was trying to go after other dog's. My Shepherd did the same thing. He hated other dog's. Even puppies, he would react the same way so I just kept him away from other dog's all his life. He hated other dog's so he wasn't really missing anything. I tried and tried but I could not break him from that behavior. I still loved him to death and he had a great life. Spoiled rotten. I had to put him down when he was 12 years old. Broke my heart. But I am going for another German Shepherd.

That is very cruel, the GS working line is a security and fighter dog not some house pet. I own one and should not excessively tamed against its nature using herm sprenger prong collar. Please get a dog with no fighting sprite. This one is awesome beast, and dominant dog .

Not aggression. My well socialised 8 month GSD does the same most of the time. It’s just what they do, they bark all the time. Don’t get one expecting it to be perfect because it won’t be! My boy sounds as if he’s about to savage someone with his huge bark but if I let him up to another dog he would wag his tail and be excitable. You shouldn’t let them up to another dog while they are barking though as it rewards the behaviour.

Wheres the high quality reward for good behavior? There is no incentive for the dog to learn what is good and understand what the desired outcome of the training is. Slack lead as much as possible will allow the dog to relax more too.

This is not aggression. This is over-excited play behavior. I know because my dog does the same thing as well as raising her hackles, and a dog trainer even confirmed that no, she's not being aggressive, she's overexcited. This behavior can start a fight, though, and that's why all interactions with other dogs are heavily supervised, and why I only take her to a dog park when she is tired and there aren't many dogs there. And you taught that dog nothing. At the end it's obvious that dog is still excited and wants to go crazy. The dog even growls at another, and consistently keeps trying to lunge at other dogs. You are not teaching this dog to keep calm, and the excitement is only going to build until you let them off leash in a dog park one day and that over-excitement makes them accidentally kill a small dog. This is not something you can resolve in one training session. This is something that takes weeks to months to teach. All you have done here is taught the owners how to gain control over an over-excited dog. This dog is just going to be another case of over-excitement behavior going from play to fight.

Sorry, but I did not see an aggressive dog what so ever. If he was anything at all, it was excited and playful. And if not trained properly, then yes, the dog will pull the leash to play with the other dogs, and since we are talking about a german shepard here, the dog is most likely stronger then its owner. I know a bit more about it since I am getting a GSD so I am reading into behavior and everything of the dog. But even if I hadn't, I would still see that this dog is not aggressive.

As a trainer you should know not to correct the dog you’re working with because of other people’s dogs rushing at its face. That’s really irresponsible and dangerous in this situation

I’m sorry but a prong collar? You’re teaching him that seeing a dog means spikes jabbing into his throat!! Wrong wrong WRONG WAY! Trainers that tell you to use treats for everything also aren’t very effective - they don’t use Shepherds as police dogs for no reason! Criminals would carry steaks on them if that was the case! I use occasional treats, a toy reward, and mutual respect. We’re getting there, but 8 month GSDs all go through the barky stage.

thehiatusprt, you have no idea how training collars work, do you? They have nothing to do with pain, only pressure. When the dog does something undesirable like lunging at another dog, uncomfortable pressure is applied to show him this is not wanted. He will realize that lunging will always make him uncomfortable, so he still stop doing it. If someone uneducated uses a training collar, yes, they can be painful. Use them correctly, or not at all.

Ugh theres an e collar under the bandana, a pop would never cause a dog to yelp like this. Lying about the methods youre using, and youre just punishing instead of enforcing focus on you around you with positive outcomes with the e collar youre just confusing the dog who just wants to play and making her scared of other dogs. E collars are great but if ur gna use them use them properly smfh and dont lie about what youre doing
