Man the negative comments kill me, some of u guys are saying just go buy another $200 battery and be done with it…has it not occurred to u all that even though $200 isn’t much money relatively speaking, the vast majority of people live paycheck to paycheck in this world. It’s not feasible for them to shell that money out most weeks when there are more important things to buy just to survive, especially in todays economy. Just like my grandmother used to say, “If u don’t have anything nice to say, then……….(u know the rest)”.

It is possible to desulphate an AGM but this is a little aggressive. You have to be real careful about not overheating it because there isn't much electrolyte like a flooded battery but need to get enough current to break up the crust so it can be converted back into the electrolyte solution. Also, you should really wait 24 hours before doing a load test for the surface charge to dissipate. The longer the better. I had 2 batteries I recovered that both rested at 12.99-13.0v after 2 days. One was a completely flat, I mean FLAT 0V floated lead acid battery. It was only that way about 3 or 4 days though. The longer you leave a battery completely discharged the less chance it can come back.

Can I suggest that you should start by opening the battery up. You will probably find that the glass mats will be low on electrolyte. Top them up and then start your experiments.

@@phillemoncornelius1058 Dribble some distilled water into each cell with a syringe until the mat is fully wetted out. Only do a little at a time (maybe 5ml, or so) and attempt to charge each time. If the mat dries out during the charge, add a little more. You don't want to flood the cell. Just re-wet the mat. Make sure you use distilled water, as well. Don't use mineral water, or tap water, as the minerals in the water will ruin the cells.

Can I recommend a white cane for anyone who removes the charger leads while the charger is running? You could spark off an explosion of hydrogen gas, blow the top off the battery, and end up with acid in your eyes. Similar hazard having the load charger leaning against the battery while testing.

I have a desulfator myself. I managed to recently recover an open-cell, lead-acid car battery. It was down to 10v. After 4 weeks of desulfation (although, I think the cells were properly desulfated sometime between week 3 and 4), I was able to charge the battery up to 13.1v. So, the fact that you were able to improve the AGM using the welder technique gives promise to the idea that using a desulfator will work just as well. Update: After I took the battery back out into 90 degree temperature, it dropped back down to 8v. So, I think the battery was too far gone from being in Texas temperature for 6 years.

Man, this is done perfectly as an experiment! This is the first video I ever watched the trick on an AGM (or SLA) battery! The video itself is compact! And the experiment steps make sense (IMHO, as I advised you before). One comment is, since we can’t top/refill AGM or SLA batteries, this trick “might” make some electrolyte gas go out, depending on how long you “cook” or “fry” it, which may shorten its life a little bit. This is why others like STP only do it on wet batteries, since we can refill water. Another reason is the potential explosion risk, as you understand. Anyway, the conclusion is very promising! The trick DOES improve CCA! If possible, can you do this on an OLD BUT GOOD wet battery and share with us? It should work!

I've seen a few videos where you can top off an AGM battery with distilled water, just not as high as a flooded lead acid battery. I topped my motorcycle AGM battery off with distilled water just to the top of the glass mat, just where the matt looks wet. But I've been seeing that you can't use this procedure on an AGM battery, I've read that it ruins them, IDK. Most sealed batterys, even if they say no maintenance batteries, have fill caps located under the sticker on top. I used a warm hair dryer to soften the sticker glue and carefully removed it and stuck it on a clean Ziplock baggy so that I can reattach later when I'm finished servicing it. The caps in this battery are all attached to a single strip at the top so you can't just remove one individual cap, you carefully pry them all up and they all stay attached to that strip. It's kinda hard to tell that there's caps under the sticker in my case, that strip looked like just part of the battery case so it can full you. I'm not sure if I want to try this with my welder or not, I just charged mine after adding a bit of water and I'll see how it does now, if that didn't do the trick then what do I have to lose(besides my face 🤣) by trying the welder method. And this welder also does DC pulse, not sure if the pulse function would work hooked to a battery or not or if there would be any benefit, just throwing it out there.

As for charging you want to go for around 17 volts -for 5.minutes - then allow the battery to cool down for about an hour - If the battery is a junkyard dead battery you might have to do it 5 or 6 times - Also with AGM batterys there is a cover and most can be removed - just add water to the top of the plates no more than that - If it's a battery in service as in a car you might only need to de-sulfate it once or twice at 16 to 17 volts - I'm not sure if that welder will go down to 16 volts when it's real hot - - It won't work for all battrey's - in industry we de-sulfate battrey's all the time - up to 85° about 17 volts 85° and above about 16 volts - . Your driving the lead sulphate on the negative plate back into the water and the oxygen on in the positive plate back into the water - the oxygen combined with the sulfate making sulfuric acid once again - In industry it's called equalizing the battery but it's done at a low current till the battery in this case climbs to 15.5 to 17 volts depending on temperature

I run the same batteries in my jeep. I have found that an optima 400 or 1200 charger works really well for me. To maintain them when it's sitting and for reviving severely discharged batteries. I left my jl which has really bad parasitic draw sit for 6 months and drained my batteries below 6v and 3vs. I bought the optima 400 and was able to get them to hold 12.8/12.9 volts when sitting for days. Didn't have any issues from bringing them up like some chargers do with not reading heavily discharged batteries. Cyclyed them up to 14.6 V in spec range and floated them at 13.6 in spec range. I have had those same batteries in my car for 3 plus years now with no issues. Unless I let it sit for weeks on end without maintaing it, but I hopefully won't do that again lol.

Those battrey's have rubber vent caps under the cover - you can add water to them just add a little to just the top of the plates - In reality as long as it's not real hot as it's been this summer in the south - they don't need water for 8 to 10 yrs - I've had many of them -

This will only extend the life cycle somewhat. during the load test you didnt let it stay on for lon to see if it held.
@Wrenchmonkey1
@Wrenchmonkey1 Ай бұрын
When load testing that way, you don't let it stay on for long. 500 amps is an insane amount of current. The correct thing to do is to remove the battery from the charger and let it rest for a few hours and see how well it holds after the surface charge dissipates, then do a brief load test. The only thing he did 'wrong' was failing to let the battery rest after the charge. If you want to do a capacity test, there are testers that are made for that purpose as well, but what you propose doing with a load tester is a terrible idea.

The welder being a DC [ARC] confused me a bit, I don't really understand what restoring or re-conditioning was accomplished. A warm day outside so the battery wasn't too cold hot or cold; meaning the battery should take up to around a 15v charging and been happy. The welder I could have believed might have done some benefit if it had been an AC Voltage welder, being that it would have acted as a desulfation device. Hitting the battery with a DC welder [High Amperage~200A /Low Voltage~12V] would have just acted as a higher than normal charging source, with lower than desired topping voltage. Depending on the electrolyte level in the cells the higher amperage had the potential to burn the top of the plates if the Glass Mat was dry causing a dead short in the plates. For the AGM Battery Recondioning at a battery shop the process is almost exactly the same as a standard lead acid battery with removable caps, the battery is washed down so no dirt gets knocked into the battery, then the weight of the clean battery is taken and compared to the stated weight by the manufacturer, anything less is water that was burned off and gets weighed back into the battery as de-ionized water. You just have to cut the caps out, add water, charge it then glue the caps back in.
