Nick Down is Environmental Lead for Velcourt and manages the now largely arable combinable cropping farming enterprise of the 3,260 hectare (ha) Yattendon Estate (part of the LEAF demonstration farm network) in Berkshire. He talks about farming operations within a 5 year mid-tier CS agreement, which is taking 300 ha of marginal land out of production, outlining the challenges and aims. They are looking at having a wide crop rotation including winter and spring crops, to reduce intensity of tillage, reduce reliance on synthetic inputs, and develop a partnership with a neighbouring farm to reintroduce stock back into the system.
