Historical context:
"Ça ira" (English: "it'll be fine") is an emblematic song of the French Revolution, first heard in May 1790. It underwent several changes in wording, all of which used the title words as part of the refrain.
The music is a popular contredanse air called "Le carillon national", and was composed by Bécourt, a violinist (according to other sources: side drum player) of the théâtre Beaujolais. Queen Marie Antoinette herself is said to have often played the music on her harpsichord.
The title and theme of the refrain were inspired by Benjamin Franklin, in France as a representative of the Continental Congress, who was very popular among the French people. When asked about the American Revolutionary War, he would reportedly reply, in somewhat broken French, "Ça ira, ça ira" ("It'll be fine, it'll be fine").

The translation is quite wrong. the "lantern" mean "gallow" (public lantern were often used by mob to lynch and hang peoples). So " Ah, ça ira, ça ira les aristocrates à la lanterne" is more " Ah, They will go, they will go the aristocrats to the lantern (gallow). And not "ca ira" in the meaning of "it's ok"

The Lantern was also a hunting house at the Versailles, so it's a pun - both "the aristocrats to the house/lamp post"

You are 100% wrong "ça ira" is the singular form. So it does NOT applies to "les aristocrates". It means "things will be fine". It's a message of hope. And "lanterne" simply means lantern. It's just a figure of speech in the song to say they will hang people on a lamp posts where lanterns are attached.

@@borkug1566 Yes, this is singular because this is a form of slang. " Ça" is used for things, kinda like "it". The grammaticaly correct way is " Ils iront, ils iront, les aristocrates à la lanterne" but "Ça" is simpler and deshumanize the aristocrates. And your right about the lantern, that's excatly what I meant : "lanterne" mean "lantern", but used as gallow. But the message of hope is also implied with the double meaning of "ca ira" in french, kinda like a pun, indeed. The meaning "it will be ok" is the one from the second part of the sentence : " It will be ok, it will be ok, we'll hang the aristocrats." It make sense here while "they will go" don't and vice-versa.

This song has changed versions many times though. The original version was very long and mentioned all the heroes of the day, then it became very crude, murderous, talked about torturing aristocrats and called Marie Antoinette a slave, and finally, it settled on this version. But people have continued to change it over time. Even the Gojira version was different.

I think the translation "a la lanterne" in English should be more like "to the gallows" or "to the lamp post" referring to where they aristocrats will be hanged. "the lantern" is a literal but confusing translation.

Well, no, Batya Makhno is not wrong in saying that here. The most virulent of the revolutionaries at that time, the people of Paris in arms, were patriots for sure but not that much fans of authority (They were called the sans-culottes or breechless, because breeches were for the fancy nobles and bourgeois bitches and pants were for the working men) The new govt felt they had to rein them in at some point so they could start getting the country in good order, but before that, patriotic working men did trounce the shit of the Prussian Army at Valmy by just being raging badasses intent on fucking up monarchist son of bitches.

What’s odd is that this original beat makes the song sound too happy. Heavy metal works so much better to express the rage the bourgeoisie population of France was feeling at this time in history. The song also sounds like if the US put the Bill of Rights to music it would sound very similar.
