Medical Debt is High for Patients, But Hospitals Still Thrive.
The Dallas-Fort Worth Metro Area has the highest rates of medical debt in America.
Tarrant County (Fort Worth) is the highest with 27% of adults having medical debt.
Dallas County is the second highest with 23%.
The median medical debt in these two counties is $1,000.
Texas' overall high uninsured rate of 18% is a major contributor to these two counties ranking the highest.
One might think the local hospital would be suffering given the high level of uninsured patients and medical debt.
Think AGAIN!
Dallas-Fort Worth hospitals have higher operating margins ranging from 6%-12%... mostly above the national average of 6%.
Watch the video to learn why this contradiction exists.

My father, in his 80s, is having to file bankruptcy due to his wife’s medical issues during Covid-19. She had blood clots in her lungs. Hospital sold debt to debt collector. They live in Nevada and this was supposed to never happen. It is insane.

I have a friend who mom is having a issue and boy according to her mom they wanted to get her on a lot of things costly in the treatment area and she declined she in her 80s and decided look im going to choose god and time will tell she dont want to pay and have the burden and for the first time is when i realized hospitals getting more about help you in the hospitals for more money they say to help you but for how long for a couple of years 2 to 5 or less and back to the same issue i think people who sick now need to think about that. Give you surgery and 2 yrs later issue back for another surgery I hope people wake up its getting very noticable on high payments and more

Congress appropriated nearly half a trillion dollars for hospitals to use during the pandemic. Reasons cited: Shoring up revenue losses and to helping providers pay for costs related to treating covid patients. What's not discussed is that there was virtually no oversight, little accountability (nor) transparency on how these funds were to be distributed and used. I can't help but think if a fraction of that funding actually went to support American citizens. Hardworking Americans who in many cases experienced tremendous medical debt during this period compounded by rampant job loss, loss of homes and private health insurance tied to their jobs. In 2020 both parties voted to give Wall Street several trillion dollars in taxpayer funded bailouts. The largest single transfer of wealth in human history.

Great video Dr. Bricker. You, once again, put a topic into "layman's terms". A couple of other items jumped out at me. If I am an employer, of almost any size, why wouldn't I self-insure, and bolt-on a Centers of Excellence/SmartCare Centers program like Edison Healthcare, where fees are negotiated for high cost surgeries and care, where you would totally circumvent the Dallas-Fort Worth hospital network. We all know the high percentages of unnecessary surgeries, but after watching your video, it also makes me wonder if surgeries percentages are higher amongst the insured versus the un-insured.

Self-funding takes more time and is more complicated to understand for an employer. That said, it is still the better way to go.

I may be jumping to conclusions based on your video, but I was reading between the lines and heard "hospital-doctor co-ops empower monopolies in healthcare". Great video. I wonder what the "rebuttal" would be if such a thing exists.

While it's sadly unfortunate that medicine has become such a money-chasing business venture at the expense of others in many respects, it's important to note that many private practice physicians have been selling out their decision-making autonomy to hospital-owned affilitiations in exchange for desperately needed help w the increasingly complex administrative aspects of their role, particularly with alternative-based reimbursement models like ACOs etc., that require Herculean lift & add'l FTE's to meet payer expectations.
