How Finance Changes Biochemistry and Causes Disease... 'Metabolical' Book Review.
'Metabolical' is the latest book by Dr. Robert Lustig, who wrote it after retiring as a pediatric neuroendocrinologist at the University of California at San Francisco (one of the top academic medical centers in the country).
Dr. Lustig explains how the food industry strategized to increase profits by adding sugar to our food supply starting in the 1970s. Sugar not only makes food more palatable, but also is an addictive substance causing us to eat more.
Increased sugar consumption causes our bodies to produce chronically high levels of insulin... called 'hyperinsulinemia.'
Hyperinsulinemia is a major driver of disease... and not just obesity and diabetes as many people already know.
Hyperinsulinemia increases the risk of breast, colon, pancreatic, kidney and many other cancers. Hyperinsulinemia also increases cancer mortality by 2X.
Hyperinsulinemia increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attacks) independent of any other risk factors such as high cholesterol or diabetes. In other words, even if you do not have high cholesterol or diabetes, hyperinsulinemia alone will increase your risk of cardiovascular disease... and this fact has been known for almost 30 years.
Dr. Lustig's book is a must read for those who want to understand the root cause of chronic disease in America.
**CORRECTION: Insulin is not a steroid hormone and therefore, is not a transcription factor. Insulin binds to cell membrane receptors to create biochemical changes within the cell.

I am so glad you did this video! This is a huge problem with most complex healthcare issues. People need access to real food and not ultra-processed foods to assist with healing. TY!

Thank you for sharing this video. Definitely going to read Metabolical and try to build on idea of Dr. Lustig. You should also make a video about bioengineered food, GMO and expensive access to organic food. When I came to US I gained 30 pounds in three month. Everything was way too sweet and addictive. It took me 6 month of workouts and healthy lifestyle to go back to my normal weight. American food is dangerous because it is really intended to make you sick for the profit. We should be accountable for our choices and bring dramatic positive change into food industry.

Great video. Given how heavily subsidized food is in the United States, I would love for the government to incentivize lower added sugar. If not for the health benefits for citizens, then for the reduced burden on public services downstream of the increased sugar consumption. Would be fun to do an analysis to see how much you would need to reduce added sugars to see a Medicare/medicaid benefit.

Great video on this topic. I read this book years ago and use it to evaluate my own blood work AND tell by doctor which test I want run. Ultra processed, industrial foods are a root cause of so much of chronic conditions we Americans deal with. Dr. Bricker, have you also investigated seed oils? I've recently come across several videos showing these are huge contributors to chronic inflammation.

I would like to know what are your thoughts on hospital operator Steward Healthcare and their crisis in Massachusets. I am speculating on Medical Properties stocks who is the landlord of hospital bulidings where Steward operates and the operator don't have money to pay rents. How is it even possible that a hospital can't get money for rents payments?

Can high levels of artificial insulin be bad for you? If you have type 1 diabetes?

Typically Type I does not require high levels of insulin. It’s a balance… both too much and too little cause problems.
