This Week: Shannon and Mattias discuss Bokken Jedi, the needs of a director for actors, and how terrifying those Night Troopers are! Plus, Baldurs Gate 3, Ezra, and more Star Whales!
About the podcast:
Codependent Content is a podcast where my partner and I discuss the TV shows, Movies, and Video Games in which we've formed an unhealthy relationship. My name is Mattias. My Co-Host is Shannon Riley. Join us each week as we try to make sense of the media we continually give our hearts, against our better judgment, and commiserate with us as we struggle and fail to let go of the characters, stories, and worlds we are entangled with.
Because just when we think we're done with content.
It draws us back in.

1. Thrawn’s Star Destroyer is called the Chimaera. I am very excited to see more of Thrawn and I love the return of Lars Mikkelsen’s portrayal of Thrawn, this time in live action. Thrawn has been a fan favorite for a long time and has always typically been the smartest guy in the room. Anytime there was failure on Thrawn’s side, it was typically because of other arrogant imperial leaders disobeying orders or seeking out their own glory which would lead to a defeat, not because of Thrawn messing up. His main weakness in Rebels is the force, the Jedi, and the Jedi’s ideals such as the concept of self-sacrifice for the greater good. Ezra’s plan at the end of Rebels blindsided Thrawn and his line to Sabine in this show where he says she has jeopardized the state of the galaxy because of her decision, just shows how baffled he is by these decisions of complete selflessness by Ezra and complete selfishness by Sabine. I think it will be interesting to see how Thrawn behaves and how effective he is after the last decade in this second galaxy. Especially since he has supposedly spent much time with the Great Mother and the Nightsisters of Peridea. Also Thrawn is one of the few who knew that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader were one in the same as he had met Anakin during the Clone Wars and later met Vader and realized the similarities in abilities, piloting skills, tactics, etc. He first met Anakin after Ahsoka left the Order so it makes sense that he knows basically nothing about her. I am very interested in how he acts with the information that Anakin was Ahsoka’s teacher. 2. Enoch and the Night troopers intrigue me, and Matthias I think you are right when you say that since their numbers have dwindled, these remaining troops must be the best of the best. There is definitely Samurai and/or Roman Centurion influence in their armor, especially Enoch’s helmet. There is also the fact that these men are still loyal to Thrawn after all this time which means that not only are they extremely dangerous but that they will follow his every command and his alone. I definitely hope to see them to be more than cannon fodder especially Enoch. As for Shannon’s idea of the troopers being Nightbrothers, I think that is impossible. The Nightbrothers were the males of Dathomir that originally were taken from the planet Iridonia, where the Zabrak species is from. Like Darth Maul, they have horns on their head so I don’t think they would be wearing stormtrooper armor unless it was modified to fit their horns which as we can see, they have not been modified. The Dathmiri, aka the females from Peridea used the purrgils to head to our main galaxy and establish themselves on Dathomir. Of course they need males to populate and thus they stole male Zabraks from Iridonia. Take note that there are female Zabrak and these have the same horns as the males while also having hair. Jedi Master Eeth Koth and Darth Maul are both Zabrak with one being from Iridonia and the other from Dathomir. Getting back on track, this means that there should be no Zabraks at all on Peridea or even in this second galaxy, which means that these troopers must be the same troops on the Chimaera that were taken with Thrawn and Ezra. As for males on Peridea, the only thing we have seen is that the bandit/nomad groups are seemingly male. The reanimated idea has merit but I think it is highly unlikely and these troopers are just hardened survivors. Nightsister magic could be involved and if it is, it could have been used to physically enhance them but beyond that I don’t think it is involved at all. 3. The Great Mother and other present Nightsisters remind me of the Sisters of Fate. These three may be allying with Thrawn to gain power and reestablish a Nightsister Clan or they may be able to see parts of Thrawn’s future and have decided to throw their lot in with him. 4. Thrawn ordered for a cargo transfer to his star destroyer and Morgan states that she has seen the catacombs and that it will take three days. This likely means the bodies of the fallen, this referring to fallen Nightsisters who have died over a millenia but I could be wrong. This possibility leads me to believe that Thrawn will have an elite guard in what men he has left as well as an undead army thanks to nightsister magic. The catacombs likely also had relics, art, etc and I would not put it past Thrawn to go around collecting these things to take back with him, as he is a collector. 5. Baylan is being drawn to something on Peridea but what that is I have no idea. I do like that Shin is very inquisitive and not like the typical dark apprentice who follows orders and says very little beyond jabs and barbed words. Rather she is always questioning things and trying to understand. This shows to me that her character is being built upon which is great as most of the focus lies with Baylan. Baylan’s talk about a cycle of Jedi Orders and Empires resonated with me especially since I have taken a deep dive into Legends material that date back thousands of years where this happens time and time again where the Jedi fall, an Empire rises, the Empire falls, the Jedi rise, and it begins again. How he means to end this cycle, I am unsure of but the only feasible answers I can come up with would be for both to either coexist together or none to exist at all. Baylan also notes about the Jedi Order that he was once a part of not having a future. I believe this is a reference to how tied together the Jedi Order and the Republic was, with the Senate having practically complete control over the Order. This ultimately led to the downfall of the Order because the Jedi were forced to be Generals in the war despite their role as peacekeepers and the fact that they should have been neutral in the conflict. 6. The device that Sabine was using was basically pointing her in Ezra’s last known location like a compass points North. It had the coordinates and was leading Sabine in the right direction. Once it was destroyed, she just had to remember what direction she was going in before and get back on course. She wouldn’t know exactly when to stop but she knows the direction she needs to go. This doesn’t solve everything like how she stumbles upon the crab/turtle/whatever species who happen to know Ezra and recognize a symbol on her pauldron but its a step in the right direction. 7. Ezra has gone from Space Aladdin to Space Moses apparently and I must say that the actor not only looks like him but also sounds like him so I am happy with the casting choice. Sabine not telling Ezra that she made his sacrifice all those years ago meaningless is going to come back to bite her either with the destruction of the nomad tribe or Ezra’s anger or likely both. However, these actors don’t seem to have much chemistry from what little we saw so it may make things feel cheaper than it should be. Everything seemed awkward at first glance. 8. I don’t think Sabine even knows where to go from this point. It reminds me of a line that Heath Ledger’s Joker made about how he is like a dog chasing cars and wouldn’t know what to do if he ever caught one. I think that may apply here as Sabine was so tunnel-visioned on finding Ezra that she ignored all the ramifications of actually doing that. And now that she has found him, she has no idea what is next. Sabine is likely now truly realizing the ramifications of what she has done in her quest and also likely now realizes that Ezra would never have wanted her to do this if it meant freeing Thrawn. I think in the latter half of their meeting, Sabine has that realization and is thus more somber than we think she should be as she knows that she fucked up big time and that things are going to only get worse from here so she is going to get as much from this reunion as she can, while she still can, before Ezra learns the truth.
