In this video I will restore old 19 century wardrobe that has faux wood painted on it. In this period the faux wood painting was a new thing and very popular finish. Doing it correctly requires knowledge about the materials and right techniques.

Today I learned that orange paint plus a bit of cardboard makes ebony wood! 😂 Joking aside, it was remarkable.

Your work always amazes me! Here, in the States, an old, beaten up piece such as this, would be sanded and finished with a colored chalk paint. Your artistry in creating a faux wood finish is what sets you apart. Lovely work!

You would be horrified at how much beautiful oak, walnut, cherry etc that I am asked to paint these days. Awful……. I now clear coat with shellac and then paint their pieces so that when the fashion changes they can recover that beauty more easily.

Watch Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration if you want to see an American who treats antique furniture properly. Putting a faux wood layer of paint on this is hardly different than rattle canning it, it's still covered in paint at the end of the day.

@@yarb2643 This is a piece of cheap pine furniture, and painting faux wood is exactly what they did with them when it was made. Love Thomas John:s videos by the way, watch them again and again.

I've seen many of your videos before but this one just stands out from all the rest. The way you managed to fully match the original paint was incredible and you make it look so easy. We are specialists in original painted furniture so this one really stands out to me. The paint is faux Rosewood and was used on pine in Eastern Europe in the 19th century to make it look like a more expensive piece than it really was. You have inspired me to make a couple of videos here and there!

Excellent work! Looking at the original piece i assume it is some kind of softwood that had wood graining effect applied to it, in the same way modern furniture would make use of thin real wood veneers, or in the case of many manufacturers, printed images of real wood. That this traditional techniques has lasted so long is testimony to the quality of the original work. Your ability to match this after over 100 years is testimony to your own skill. Although you have focussed more upon the new techniques this piece provided the opportunity for displaying, you have included sufficient material on your repairs and renewal of the damaged material prior to finishing to remind us how well versed in your profession you are. Not only do you do it well, you make it look easy. As a woodworking teacher of over 25 years experience I can vouch that none of what you have shown is as easy as you make it look. I have enjoyed all your pervious videos and look forward to seeing what else you have to show us in the future. The calm music and lack of constant narration only makes your videos more watchable in my opinion. Proof it is not necessary to maintain a stream of (often) pointless babble just to remind us you are there, like the proverb about empty vessels making the most noise, which some content providers would do well to learn.

I have asked you this before, but it is quite notable in this video - that little finishing plane that you use on the patches and plugs you had to insert to repair this piece must be kept razor sharp! A plane that is even slightly dull will rip and mar the wood, something i know from experience. Asidefrom being the master of refinishing and repair, you are the master of tool maintenance. Thanks again.

Oh my goodness, you are the best!! What a fascinating technique, I am so glad you showed it to us. I am slowing working on refinishing my grandparents bed stand (1920-1930's) that has painted flowers on it. Didn't want to just strip it down and loose the painting, so have been researching other options. I also need to add a bit of an extender to the footboard and I think this technique is going to be perfect for the extension. Thank you so much! I am so glad that I found your channel, I have learned so much. THANK YOU.

Beyond & above the beautiful restauration, I find it moving that a piece of wood furniture, well older than 125 years, will still be around for generations to come. It will cross future decades and live on after we're all dead. This is the work of a history custodian. Your work, Sir, is that much more noble. Your respectful, painstaking work is your heritage to history and future generations. Hopefully, others like you will take on the baton and continue the preservation. Well done!
