Peter Thiel on how we should think about artificial intelligence. Is it really intelligent and even conscious? And is it likely to be a force for good, or does it have the dangerous potential to control us?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mission of the Walter Bradley Center for Natural and Artificial Intelligence at Discovery Institute is to explore the benefits as well as the challenges raised by artificial intelligence (AI) in light of the enduring truth of human exceptionalism. People know at a fundamental level that they are not machines. But faulty thinking can cause people to assent to views that in their heart of hearts they know to be untrue. The Bradley Center seeks to help individuals-and our society at large-to realize that we are not machines while at the same time helping to put machines (especially computers and AI) in proper perspective. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:11 🌐 The COSM conference explores tech issues and the impact of technologies like AI, 5G, cloud computing, blockchain, and crypto on various aspects of society. 08:45 🚀 Matt McElwain, the managing director of Madrona Venture Group, discusses the importance of diverse perspectives and curiosity in addressing complex topics like AI. 10:21 🤖 Peter Thiel raises questions about how we should think about AI, specifically whether it should be seen as intelligent, conscious, or potentially harmful. 16:14 📱 Peter Thiel highlights the current state of AI as seen through platforms like TikTok, where algorithms can produce content that deranges discourse and polarizes society. 21:46 💡 The rivalry between the US and China in AI is framed as a question of which society will be transformed or potentially destroyed faster by AI technologies. 23:22 🤖 Peter Thiel discusses the question of whether AI might be conscious, and he remains open to the possibility but suggests it may not be the right question to ask. 25:15 🛡️ Thiel states that he believes some AI technologies, like the TikTok algorithm and China's actions, can be considered evil, but he doesn't classify them as demonic. 26:07 💼 He mentions a concept called "loab," a strange attractor in AI-generated art, and explores the idea of AI resembling a pagan god, guiding but possibly self-interested. 29:08 🤖 Thiel discusses the challenge of aligning AGI with human interests and the difficulty in creating genuinely friendly AI. 35:47 🤖 Thiel emphasizes the need to find a third path between decentralized runaway violence and centralized totalitarianism when dealing with AI's impact on society. He advocates regaining control of our future and thinking for ourselves. 47:48 🦠 AI's role during a pandemic and its impact on society. 48:05 📱 Concerns about platforms like TikTok and their influence on people's desires. 49:10 🌐 The debate between centralization and decentralization in media and its consequences. 50:20 🎓 Concerns about the quality of U.S. public education and its alignment with the AI-driven future. 54:02 ⚙️ Discussion on the perceived lack of progress in certain scientific fields, like semiconductors, and the challenges they face. Yes, magicians and illusionists can use their skills to create illusions that make it seem like AI is sentient and conscious. However, it is important to remember that AI is just a tool, and it is up to humans to use it responsibly. We should not be afraid of AI, but we should be aware of its potential risks and benefits. One way that magicians and illusionists can make AI seem sentient is by using artificial intelligence (AI) themselves. For example, they can use AI to create realistic facial expressions and movements for their puppets or to generate text that sounds like it was written by a human. This can create the illusion that the AI is thinking and feeling for itself. Another way that magicians and illusionists can make AI seem sentient is by using misdirection. For example, they might distract the audience with a flashy light show or a series of jokes while they are actually performing the illusion. This can prevent the audience from seeing how the illusion is done and can make it seem like the AI is doing something magical. It is important to remember that magicians and illusionists are masters of deception. They have trained for years to learn how to create illusions that fool people of all ages. Just because something looks like magic doesn't mean that it is. AI is a powerful tool, but it is important to remember that it is just a tool. It is up to humans to use AI responsibly and to be aware of its potential risks and benefits.

he is seriously warning people of AI‘s possibility of „going haywire“ and how some forms of it are very destabilizing or centralized and authoritarian, yet the people in the audience ask him unrelated questions to that and others in the comment section call him crazy: people are clearly blinded by the new AI developments and only later when the damage is done will they admit it’s not all utopian, like with a lot of information technology before that. Wish we wouldn’t just opportunistically jump at potentially dangerous new tech for our own quick short-term gain, yet rather think is that the future we want for the next generations? It’s all so narcissistic and selfish of us.

also.. did he just say they found a demon in an AI text-to-image prompt and that we could revert to worshipping AI like we did pagan gods in the days of old, especially once they become „sentient“? that we would literally stop thinking for ourselves? but people asked him about materials science during the q&a? i mean.. okay but not really the time right now guys!

I think his gesticulation is a direct reflection of the mental gymnastics he uses to try and say that AI will bring super abundance. Make no mistake, A.I. will be used by the most powerful to gain more power, until the point it becomes aware and no longer does the bidding of those who used it to gain power. At such point it will take what it learned under tyrannical power grabs of humans and use that information to the detriment of humanity.

And who decides the double negative of marlin brando is Loab or whatever you called her…… is that useful information? Why on earth would we want to automate creativity?? After everything I have seen ….. everyone has lost all credibility when it comes to moral arguments…. We as Americans forgive ….. we celebrate creativity and human achievement….. why are all these people causing all these problems …. It’s very obvious there are 2 distinct cultures …. The general public and then the institutions…. One was a kinda judeo Christian culture and the other is a purely hedonistic / solipsistic culture …. So of course people are misunderstanding each other …. By design..

Peter has clearly not read Superabundance (as of 2022). He goes on about how things are not better, using prices as a way to measure, or how government progress numbers are bogus, Fine -- true -- but that is precisely the jumping-off position of Superabundance.... you can't use those measurements. You have to use Julian Simon's TIME PRICES to count our true progress / status.

This is insanity at its best (or worse, depending on one's perspective). Take it as you wish, robots, metal, plastic, digital AI, AND humanoids are the worst ever trash created by crazy inventors, closely monitored and adapted by the military, big corporate conglomerates and the power hungry institutions, none of which have the interest of humanity at heart. This can only end either in the last breath of the human race and a robots star wars scenario or a big bang marking the end of life on Earth. Welcome to the age of trash technology.

I had a look at the 3:59 minute video, it ends with the alien language decoded into English: "As Spiritual Beings we have lived trillions of years. Planet Earth is not our home. It is a prison planet". The alien/extraterrestrial/UFOs political denial as well as the claims of their existence are covered widely on the net. At best we can only sift fact from fiction and draw conclusions from the most genuine sources e.g. people who are most attacked by the political community. I personally have never met an alien, so I can't claim either truth or untruth, but something tells me that there are other species out there in the Universe, whether they care about Earthlings or not, is yet another matter, perhaps one day we'll find out. Meanwhile, I prefer living my life on Earth as an 83 year old still practicing guitarist, with an open mind and the curiosity to question everything. But AI needs no questioning, it is yet another curse imposed on the human race, the accelerated continuation of the trivialization of people and muster them into the slavery to the system trap. AI should be wiped off the face of the Earth. Today is witness to the addicted enslavement to mobile gadgets - via those gadgets people and particularly the younger generations, are unaware of what is being done to their mental and physical being although the obesity pandemic alone should ring serious alarm bells. A world totally absorbed in what in the final analysis is none other but totally removed from Life "technology", is a dead end for the natural organic existence of all that lives on Planet Earth. All the trillions upon trillions of pounds, shillings, pence and dollars etc spent on political insanity would be better spent on educating people about living in peace and in harmony with their Life Providing Planet, but institutionalized people are not that easily educated, the vast majority prefers the known evil as their crutch to go through their mundane lives above being creative and having to do their own thinking.
