They're not aliens... They're an extremely advanced generation of mechas, built far in the future by other mechas.

Such an interesting scene. The robots just found an ancient robot that looks like their creator...humans. It’s like humans are their God.

These creatures aren't actually aliens but highly advanced robots. This can be deducted from their dialogue about "living humans" and "their genius".

Man if they did this and all they'd see were memes.

It's an honour that these hyper-advanced mechs still choose to adopt a humanoid form, really. They don't have to, they could be floating orbs or whatever design they wish, yet they choose to be bipedal, with legs, arms, a torso and head in standard human configuration. Of course, that might only be for these explorer "models", they might come in near infinite shapes and sizes...

This film's ending absolutely breaks me every time. I'm always sobbing like a child when the final scene on the bed comes along. Spielberg's finest work IMHO, and the Kubrick aspect makes it even better.

These advanced mechas view humans essentially as we do past civilizations, in awe of their genius.

This scene alone makes you feel like you’re watching a Stanley Kubrick film. Steven Spielberg did a great job of bringing Kubricks vision to the screen

One of the biggest motives people don't like this scene is because they think they are aliens. In fact they are the robots 2k years after, and the one that shows on the scene are simply archaeologist.

I watched this when I was 17 in the theaters I always thought they were aliens. Rewatched this the other night and by their conversations I figured they were highly advanced robots studying the past particularly humans who created the earliest mechas 2000 years before. I always loved the last parts of this movie, Man-Hattan and when he gets excavated by future mechas. The music and atmosphere took a different turn.

They are not alien. As said in the movie, they are evoluted robots (5000 years in the future) looking for memories of humans, due the fact that humankind doesn't exist anymore. They are interested in David because of his old memories of real humans

This scene is supposed to be around the year 4190 if I'm not mistaken, after they were in the ice for 2000 years.

That's how I've always imagined God to look like. Something entirely out of this world.

What if the aliens already contained the data because they are so advanced they are one with the "universe" and they just needed to know where in the universe the data was located. That's how they truly know the truth because they searched within one another rather than inside David!

Most people I knew that saw this back in the day thought these were aliens. I like the look, but if this is the future of earth and it inheritors, I would’ve thought their design evolution would’ve been more efficient and utilitarian.

No idea why people thought these things were aliens. Why would an alien have a screen in it's face? And how would it be able to download a robots memory?

I, and everybody I knew thought they were aliens. It's because, even though they have a slight 'metallic' sheen to them, they look too much like your classic 'greys'. This was the standard alien design since the 1970s, Spielberg even used it in _Close Encounters._ It makes much more sense that they're the Mecha from 2000 years in the future, the way they 'interface' with the boy. Funny that in 2000 years they still don't have Wi-Fi, they have to touch each other! 😬

In response to the question in the title, yes and no. Alien in the sense of being unfamiliar, but not in the sense of being from a different place. The depiction is of a future in which what's left of the culture started by humans includes technological beings who have chosen a humanoid form and who seem to recognize and acknowledge the value that humans contributed do the early development that led to their evolution. Basically, those are archaeologists, who discovered something from very long ago. So long ago, in fact, that it was a time we primitive humans might even recognize as familiar.
