A another piece of info: Xiaoping Deng had been in prison several times. His son had been britten by his opponents and became handicapped. But Deng stayed in China and changed the country. @@BrandByAngel I mean he has an important story and China sometimes retaliates against dissidents when they speak out so I’m glad Trevor wasn’t afraid of retaliation and did the interview anyway. Ai Weiwei has an important message to deliver about China that many in the west are not ready to hear. That’s what I was thinking.

Expat here who's lived in mainland China for about 8 years. There are plenty of people here who speak candidly about the government, including sensitive topics, and aren't nervous, much less fearful to do so. Regardless, the simple fact that most westerners have an exceedingly hard time wrapping their head around is that the Chinese government has enjoyed vast majority approval ratings from its citizens for decades, and this is based on WESTERN research (e.g. from Harvard, PEW, to name a few). Frankly, it's hard to blame them given the mind-boggling transformation the country has undergone the past 40 years. So you don't really know what you're talking about, and clearly have never been to China or talked to many mainlanders, if any. Please inform yourself more broadly about China and don't just consume western media - even better, go to China or talk to real Chinese people while maintaining an open mind (don't just ask biased questions which clearly reveal you think the Chinese government is evil).

Why are photos of Dalai Lama banned and anyone talking positive about hhs are persecuted by the chinese government. Just because at that time there were some people practicing debt servitude you are going to blame Dalai Lama for it. The tibetan government didn't had the capabilities or facilities to manage each and every family back then. It wasn't as overreaching as chinese government today, where you can't even leave the country even if you want to leave. Many families and orphans are seperated today who fled during the 90s opening of china. It was ccp's justification to invade tibet. There was no mass uprising against Dalai lama. Only chinese soldiers wanting to invade. Even in todays modern technology/information times a country can justify to invade ANY other country in the world.

I feel the same way. On the other hand, it's hard to square that with the reality that a large number of everyday Chinese choose to defend the CCP's behavior no matter what. Just look at all the comments on this video alone. We've got the typical whataboutism argument saying "What about Ethiopia?" as if that has any bearing on Ai Wei Wei. Then there are the others attacking him for his English and others attacking Trevor for even having him on. No discussions at all about the issues put forward in the show because if you can't attack the facts, you bang on the table.

@@jamestk656 a lot of Americans choose to support Trump and everything he does. And they're realllly vocal about it. They're really sensitive about criticism so they make it their job to be offended all over the internet. That doesn't mean everything Trump does is right. It just means you have only heard things from one side. If you want a real different opinion, ask native Hong Kong people or Taiwanese. China thinks they are Chinese, so it counts.

@@onikin There's a large difference between Trump supporters and CCP supporters. In the U.S., there's an equal or even larger anti-Trump movement online and on the streets. There is no comparable anti-CCP movement in China because well, that doesn't tend to end well for them. Not only that, but Trump is no longer president though Xi's presidency has no end in sight. So if we were to make equivalent comparisons, China is like the U.S. but only if you ever hear from fervent Trump supporters and Trump is still president today.
