In College i had a friend younger than me and he said someone in his class wanted to go to F1. I laughed as i did not belie it. That man was Jenson Button of Frome town in south west England. So i was shocked when he got into F1 and then he won tittle.

This was vintage Jenson, possibly one of if not the best driver in changeable conditions. His ability to make slicks work on damp track was uncanny. Pick of the bunch has to be Canada 2011.

the fact about JB scoring more points than anyone else from the Hungarian GP onwards really did have my jaw on the floor in amazement.

This is what made James Allen's commentary that day so memorable. Not only was Button more than 110 races into his F1 career and without a win, what people forget is that behind the scenes, Honda was in turmoil and seemed to be slipping further and further from the pace (they had replaced their Technical Director, Geoff Willis, with long time Honda employee, Shuhei Nakamoto). Even worse, when his engine failed in Saturday Practice, it left him 10 places worse than where he qualified (hence 4th fastest became 14th on the grid). Yet as we know, mixed weather conditions was his forte, finding grip where few could. Even before Alonso retired from the race with a loose wheel pitching him into the turn 2 tyre barrier, Button had taken the lead. Small wonder, post race, he remarked about how he didn't want the race to end, he loved seeing "P1" on his pit board

I'll never forget this race. I was so choked up when he crossed the line. Ditto when he got his championship. Love JB, he's a real character. What is it with Hungary and first wins? There and Monaco.

I fondly remember Jenson's McLaren days and also his Brawn story. Having watched live since the end of 2008, the friendly rivalry between him and Vettel was nice (very old-school).

I remember reading about Jenson in autosport magazine when he won formula ford festival. I remember seeing the picture of him and his dad. I did follow him in F3 next season. I was happily surprised he won the Williams drive, when Williams assessed him against more experienced rookies.

I was a big Jense fan back in the day. I watched all but one F1 race between 1998-2007. I only missed one. This one.

I would honestly say that Button's 2006 season was even better than his 2009 season. Remember that he outscored every other driver during second half of the season, that was an amazing comeback. Too bad that his next 2 years were absolute waste of time.

Interesting comment about ITV not hyping JB as they did with LH. Anyone who watched ITV in JB’s first year (2000) will remember the awkward monologue from JB before race coverage of the 2000 Belgian GP which he had qualified 3rd. I found James Allen’s commentary during this race over the top and embarrassing when he crossed the line. His commentary style was as if he was commentating from the pit lane permanently! Amazing video, as always. I’d been rooting for Button from the start of his career and was always frustrated at the fact that he was clearly a very talented driver, being nerfed by slow and unreliable machinery (or by his rivals being given absolute gigachad cars like The Michael had in 2004). Seeing him finally claim that first win after all of the criticisms and putdowns is a memory that will stick with me for a long time.

That GP in Hungary in 2006 was fantastic. Anyone could have won that day I think and mercifully it was Button that got it.

IIRC there were complaints about the penalties given because Schumacher and Alonso received penalties for dangerous driving that put them down 12th and 15th while Jenson got a ten place grid penalty for the engine change. The thing was, that meant Alonso and Schumacher didn't have to declare their fuel loads and could run on whatever strategy they wanted. Button, on the other hand, because he "qualified" 4th, he was locked into his fuel strategy even though he was now dumped down to 14th. Meaning, in the FIA's eyes, getting done for dangerous driving gave you an advantage over someone who got a penalty for something completely out of their control.

The Gowron comment actually made me spit my drink, so thanks for that.

On a track known to be a bit of a snorefest. This race was lively and probably the best race of the season.

Definitely remember this. I'd argue the gates AND the skies opened...as well as Jensen's eyes (Which is unstandable because we can all relate to that "Holy shit, I did it" feeling).

I remember debating with people that Button was actually a really good driver. No one ever seemed to appreciate the smooth driving style or importantly how consistent he was. Yes it might not count for much when you are consistently one of the slowest cars but it counted to bring that Brawn home when a single crash probably would have bankrupted the team I do wonder what could have happened had he not lost faith with Ross Brawn and Mercedes when they came in to initially run the team. From memory he mentions in his book that talks with them prompted him to seek a move ultimately to McLaren

It was an interesting weekend, my main recollection were the Schumacher penalty appeared super harsh as he just cruised past a car doing pedestrian speed, then did a massive qualy effort, was no match for Michelin/Alonso in the race, braved it out came good then threw all that in the bin trying to defend the impossible. Ant doing the coverage was also good.

To be honest I always used to think of JB as a 'playboy' racer, and not giving it all he had. But 2006 was probably a somewhat career defining season for him. That Hungarian Grand Prix was a sublime performance, as was the rest of the season. And 3 years later we had the 2009 season, and I was soooooooooo happy that he won the world title, I just couldn't believe it. Awesome video!!

I'm from Ecuador and the media had a different take on Button. I use the term "media" loosely because it's actually one guy in all Ecuador who's all F1... Anyway, in his rookie year Button was hyped as the next Senna (Schumacher hadn't won his 5 consecutive titles yet, so Senna was the standard). It really was like Max and Lewis but then, of course, that hype came to naught. BTW, there was never any mentioned of his "playboy" lifestyle. I only learned about it in his book. I was glad when he won the championship, it was well deserved. Imagined he had stayed in Mercedes....

Jenson had probably the greatest drive I've seen when he won in Canada 2011.. There is a bit on Top Gear when they had F1 drivers in the Suzuki, Clarkson asked him would he give up all the money etc to win, zero hesitation Jenson replied 100%.. that showed the man he is, he wanted the wins/title above all else.

I always remember the pit lane after the race at Brazil 2008 when his car caught fire, he looked fed up. If you had told him a year later he would wing the drivers championship, he wouldn’t have believed it

Makes you wonder how JB's career would have panned out if Williams won that contract dispute between themselves and BAR to secure Button's services for 2005 onward. If he did go back to Williams would he have never won first race? If he never did win his first race would he have never found himself in that Brawn for 2009 and thus never become world champion? All speculation of course but it makes you wonder... I still vaguely remember the Hungarian GP that year. I believe I was 14 and it was me, my dad and my brother going absolutely mental went Jenson crossed the line. James Allen yelling 'JENSON BUTTON WINS THE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX! GET IN THERE!' is still burned into my brain. I know a lot of people didn't like James Allen but for me, that is one of favourite F1 calls of all time! Plus that 2006 Honda is still one of the best looking cars from that era in my opinion! One of my favourite liveries of all time! I always used that car in F1 Championship Edition on PS3 back in the day! Good times indeed! 😂

The 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix was such a weird race. Unusual weather, huge differences in tire performance (as it was the last year of the tire war), grid penalties for both title contenders and a lot of what ifs. Räikkönen was looking in his mirrors to let De la Rosa past, when Liuzzi lifted to let him by. A really bad moment to initiate a swap, and pretty unnecessary too (why weren't both drivers on similar strategies?). Would Räikkönen have beaten Button otherwise? I believe Button had to make one more fuel stop after Alonso's. He was gaining on him and likely would have gained more time before his stop, but would it have been enough? It would have been very close I think, had Alonso not retired. Schumacher wanted too much. Instead of changing to slicks at the end of the race, he stayed on intermediates, hoping track position would be more important than speed. That's normally the case at the Hungaroring, but not if you're that slow. Schumacher's defense was beyond pathetic and he failed to capitalize on Alonso's unexpected DNF. Without this failed gamble even his engine failure in Japan may not have been fatal. The last what if is Barrichello. What if he had started on intermediates as well?

I missed most of the media bullshitting over Jenson just because we don't get the British press over here, but I have to admit, I didn't realise how good he was until I started reading quotes from Ross Brawn about looking at his data and going, "Holy shit!" Happily though, I was in Melbourne in 2010 so was there to see him make a single set of tyres last, what, 53 laps to win? Genuinely incredible. That was a special day.

Button's story is a nice reading about how 'smooth' he was painted by the British press but Jenson was slow. This first win was entirely accidental and so was his championship. Brawn was fast but once the field equalized - FIA legalized DD and others catched up - he never won a race and Rubens was the faster driver, with Brawn doing everything to keep JB on top. As Rubens said after one race, when he was called up to box ONLY to put Jenson ahead 'this was a textbook case of how to lose the race'.

Mansell will always be the greatest of greats for me Red 5 had me jumping up out of my chair..❤ 😂 he endured huge amounts of pain to stay in a seat and just race….to the line ❤ JB as nice as he defiantly is, was always hot and cold…and at one point I thought he was going to through his chance away… it’s as if he suddenly woke up again.. thank goodness.

It was a weird alternate universe. Hungary?! Wet?! The emotions: No, Kimi! No, Fernando! Yeah yeah, James, Brit Brit, Brit, good for Jenson, never mind that! COME ON, PEDRO! STOP MICHAEL! I cheered more for Schumacher going out than Button winning. As did Spain, I imagine. And then, Kubica was disqualified. Ferrari International Assistance to the rescue... James Allen was worryingly excited for Button, couldn't help crying out "Why don't you marry him, jeez!" Then along came Lewis... But when you scrape all that off, you were left with Jenson. Finally it seemed, he'd shaken off the jinx of being the Great British Hope™. Nope, it would take a couple of years more toil first. I can only think of Alex Jacques following Perez home in Sakhir 2020 with this one: "Nice guys finish first!" * They Think It's All Over reference.
