The older grenades were actually specifically designed to have similar shape/size/weight as a typical baseball for American soldiers who'd grown up with the sport

These soldiers are well-trained. In 1978 when I first learned how to throw a grenade, it was so simple. M67s are the most popular during VN war and later VN-Cambodian War. I also learned to estimate the distance from my position and the enemy's position. If we threw so early and the distance is not big, the enemy might grab it and threw back. Later, we used slingshots made of two bamboos of about 10, 12 feet each to throw grenades. The grenades will go further than hand throw and importantly, the enemy could not easily guess where the grenades came from.

My dad said when he was in the Marines in the early 1950’s, a sergeant was teaching about hand grenades in a classroom with what the sarge thought was an inert grenade. It was a live one. It went off and killed everyone in the class except for one marine who dropped his writing pen and reached down to the floor to pick it up. Dropping that pen saved his life

Maxhaxburger Because you always have the time... and everybody in the army know or remember how to to make a plan with hand signals and etc. They can hear you on radio signal, yelling at another member of your group which you are not in sight or such. Having English as the main language of an army is a disavantage.

***** Travel around the world and you'll see that a lots of people understand it, They may not speak it fluenty or natively but in a group there is always going to be someone who can translate part of what you are saying. few exemple: France, Switzerland, Canada ( French region ), Sweden, Norway, Denmark.. etc.. the majority understand it. There is a lot more chance for a Russian soldier to understand English than there is for a English soldier to understand Russian.

My grandpa went through this when the draft was still in effect. (He volunteered but others in his platoon were drafted). He said there were guys who got scared and froze up with the live grenade in their hand, and the DI had to pry it out of their hands and toss it. The draft clearly has its downsides but it also gave a lot of young men more respect for authority.
