When I had super tweeters in my a pillars I aimed them a little bit off axis so where they would not only bounce off the window if the window was closed but some what go outside the vehicle if the window was down it worked very well in my install for outside and inside the car

lol I didn't recognize which speaker it was, but I really thougt it looked alot like a dayton... appearently it is??? Dayton is so much the underdog here, I have and like my Focals, there are a lot of tests, reviews, comparisons between carspeakers, but Dayton hardly ever is mentioned despite the fact they look AWESOME and seem to perform very well... for my new system I was thinking about using Dayton,

What about mounting the tweeter flat on the dash, ie straight up into the windshield? Is that ok or just a bad idea to begin with? Many oems have mounted speakers up there, making it easy to upgrade and mount an aftermarket speaker.

Mark, could you comment on separating mid range drivers and tweeters? I have a 71 chevelle I am working on and I am considering mounting the mids in the kick panels and the tweeters in the dash or a pillars. Does this negatively affect sq? or does it just come back to tuning still?

Oh damn. Were those Vifa/Tymphany XT25 ring radiator silk dome tweeters and 3" Dayton Audio midrange speakers? If so, what a coincidence because that tweeter is what I have in my doors (with the flange intact) and just yesterday, I was researching on adding a (very similar in appearance?) 3 inch/4 ohm Dayton midrange speaker, in a spot on my door panel by just cutting out the holes. and screwing them on. I'd then swap out my Skar Audio 6.5 midranges for good midbase speakers if the midranges sounded good, and maybe add 2 more 3" midranges.

Im my F-150, the door grills pop right off and there's the tweeter hole along with the stock speaker(6x8). I thought I'd buy a tweeter and just stick it in. Nooo-you need to think it through, then do a dry run. Now I'm thinking: could I use that tweeter hole for a mid-range? Then mount a tweeter up on the sail. This is starting to get fun.
@DavidKristiawan
@DavidKristiawan 6 жыл бұрын
actually, i use that beaming effect to make the sound 'centered' at both the passenger seat and driver seat. my technic is to aim the right tweeter to the right ear of the listener at the left seat, and aim the left tweeter to the left ear of the listener at the right seat. so at the one side, the loudness is reduced by beaming effect while on the other side the loudness is reduced by longer distance, and you get centered sound at both left and right seat.

So I tried some 6.5" coaxials in the rear of my s13 (240sx hatch) and doing the towel technique I noticed a huge difference in sound quality having them pointing forwards rather than upwards into the roof/hatch. What are the thoughts of having forward facing rear speakers vs. just having them playing straight up?

OK here's a stumper... a lot of the medium to high end tweeters are very harsh and direct, maybe too direct. I wonder if it's better to redirect those off axis to take some of that sharpness out of the overly bright tweets. Just wondering! Great points on the charts though!

You should honestly just plan on testing every driver. There's not really a reliable way for the average joe to tell without some actual trial and error.
@rhkips
@rhkips 8 жыл бұрын
It certainly can be! I've definitely run into the phenomenon you've mentioned, and angling the tweeters slightly away from the listening position helped to smooth out the sound. I think the "harshness" you're referring to is more a function of SPL in relation to other drivers than it is the characteristics of the tweeter itself. Every driver is different, though! :)

Mind Made Design's - DIY since lower frequencies or omnidirectional and even lower frequencies are non directional port direction is not as important. You do gain more output having the driver aimed to the back of the car, however.

Great explanation, Mark. Do you do have any recommendations regarding speaker placement for subwoofers? I know you can get more output just by moving a subwoofer box around the cargo area, so does this factor in to your decision making when planning subwoofer location? It seems like a very daunting decision, particularly when building a custom box.

@tammyforbes2101

Hector Perez yes one play lower frequency’s then the other. Mid bass blends with subwoofers better and play from around 60-250htz where a midrange has a higher response like 200-2500htz.

@rhkips
@rhkips 8 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The frequencies a typical subwoofer plays are well within the human hearing range, so their contribution to the overall sound an audio system produces are auditory as well as tactile. That being said, as frequencies get lower, the amount of power required to maintain apparent volume goes up significantly. This greater need for power can be overcome somewhat by using a tactile transducer ("Bass Shaker"), which "tricks" the body into thinking there's more bass than there actually is. All that being said, the lower the frequency, the less directional the sound wave becomes, so where you point your sub is much less critical than where you point your mids and highs. What the original poster is referring to here is phase, more than axis. While they're mathematically a similar concept, their applications in audio is slightly different. In simplest terms, speakers can be in phase or out of phase in relation to each other--wire one speaker backwards and its sound waves cancel out the sound waves from another. Delving deeper into the science, you'll find that phase is highly variable across a frequency range, not just "in" or "out." Reflections off various surfaces further affect a speaker's phase response. There's a bunch of crazy math involved that's well beyond my (and many others') capabilities, which is why it's just easier to get ahold of some drivers and play around with positions to see where it sounds best to your ear. Sorry for the text wall! :]
