Don't let chords that are in difficult keys scare you! With just a little flip of a switch in your mind, you can think about these hard chords in a different way and turn them into easier, more manageable chords. Music theory is amazing!

This is the content that makes your channel so unique. Lots of people talk about music theory, but very few have the skills, both the in depth understanding as well as the communication skills, to explain how to apply these kinds of little insights that music theory provides, to the process of actually making and playing music. I have long struggled to understand how tritone substitutions work, what they're for, and how to use them, and I still have barely the tiniest fraction of a clue even after this video, but I definitely understand more now than I did 15 minutes ago.

It's this kind of stuff that attracted me to learning Jazz. I don't have to do what I'm told like in Classical music, here I can always do something different and get away with it :)

The tune had two tritone (TT) subs in a row to start with. The B7 is the TT sub of F7 which is the V7 of next chord Bb7. Bb7 is the TT sub of E7 which is the V7 of A7. A7 is the V7 of D-. So it's just a cycle of of dominants with a two TT subs to make it less obvious sounding. Another way to view it is a i vi ii V i but the vi was made dominant, the ii is a dominant sub for II. Changing minors to dominants is common sound. Fun with music so many ways to look at things.

I've watched a lot of your stuff but for some reason this one switched the light on for me. I'm off to play with my 3/7's in all keys, likewise 7/3's and wow!... you can add 9's as easy as wink. Aimee, this is a gem and so are you.

We're never done learning... I thought I was okay at tritone subs, but now I know how to apply them on a whim, which should prove really really useful. I never thought keeping the same voicing would work with the root flipped to its tritone, let alone have a particular "mood flip". Genius in small things should be your motto!

Thanks for reminding me about this. I play guitar,accordion, and piano but since the death of a dear friend have just played piano every day. I've never had lessons since a crappy experience with a knuckle wrapping old teacher dude as a kid, so these lessons are great for me. I love your humor and easygoing manner. You are articulate and make music theory stuff fun for me. Thanks Amy! May many more blessings be bestowed upon you and whatever piano you play!

Nicely explained. Also a great revelation back in my teens was discovering that G7b5 and Db7b5 have the exact same notes and 2 tritones! And diminished and whole tone scales work beautifully over them

Symetry. Yes, this really is a golden age of chordal & musical discoveries/sharing. It especially benefits younger players earlier in their journey. And then there's the other 5 pairs of 7b5's (unique for that dim. & whole tone flavor).

Very spicy. It’s cool to think about chords as an intervalic language. For example, D minor 7 b5 is an F minor with a D in the root. Music is filled these doppelgängers and contextual pathways.

Thanks for the perspective. Under the direction of a hard nose teacher, I endured the Mickey Baker Jazz book where the first lesson was like "learn the following chords in all keys". If you made it past that then you were on your way. I mean, there are always unexpected chords and , depending on the quality of the transcription, they might even be lazily named which can bring things to a halt. But with lots of practice (isn't that the secret sauce for everything) you can pivot in real time.

The timing on this is impeccable. I was literally going to ask if you could discuss these mixed/compound chords. Stone Temple Pilots music uses some of these more exotic structures and sometimes they are confusing for a new-ish player.

Tritone sub is the substitution of a dominant 7th. with a dominant 7th. that is a tritone (6 half steps) away. In the context of the 2-5-1 progression it is a chromatic pathway from the #2 chord to the tonic. That’s how I think of it.

This works well with Luiz Eça’s tune “The Dolphin”, especially if you’re working with a bass player. Often a good left hand voicing will be a familiar dominant 13 voicing, but a tritone away from what the bass is playing.

I discovered that substitution years ago, and thinking that the V7 chord can be substituted by a half step higher of the root chord and making it a Major 7 b5. I sometimes get distracted and confused easily so I remember things relatively so that I don't have to memorize each chord names and its substitute/s.
@Maurice75
@Maurice75 2 жыл бұрын
G7 -> C and Db7 -> C? Right? I could go form Dm7 G7 C or Dm7 Db7 C. It happens a lot in Tom Jobim's music and other Brazilian bossa nova player like João Bosco. Congrats on the marvelous lesson...
@whatarewedoing0
@whatarewedoing0 2 жыл бұрын
i cant imagine someone being confused by b7 but knowing f7, cant imagine that scenario but understand the idea, music is relative so names are based on the whole context of the piece but if one idea confuses you thinking of it in a different context could help but still idk

Interesting but strictly not true. In the context you are speaking about and according to Berklee the chords are different; otherwise why would you substitute one for the other. In C major Db7 can replace G7 but its function is now the sub dominant of the one chord (C). The G7 was the dominant. Substitute dominant chords do not belong to any key really because they are non diatonic structures; this is because the tensions they creates are always a major ninth above a chord tone. To see this chord as truly in another key you would have to use the Lydian Chromatic Concept which is, as far as I know, the only way to describe this chord from a tonal perspective (ie the Lydian chromatic scale).
@rick6429

Sorry I’m in grade one and you are way over my head. I see this site is for professional’s. So way down here in amature land we play Db instead of Db7, and if you come to a chord you don’t know just skip it and go back latter and deal with it one way or another. I will keep looking for sites that are way down at my level.
@Beinlausi
@Beinlausi 2 жыл бұрын
As G7 doesn't include a Db, the thumbnail statement is already disinformatonal, imo. One might use the tritone substitution, but it's not at all the same chord. A flat isn't G, and D flat isn't D. So Dflat7 isn't the same as G7. If you, of course, as jazz people like to, skip the 5ths of chords, you won't see the difference, because you lack information. Change my mind!
